A lot of people describe Scalzi’s Old Man's War novels as military science fiction, but I would classify its sequel Zoë’s Tale as a space opera. It’s a story about, well, Zoë, a teenage girl whose parents are invited to take leadership roles in building a colony on a new planet. Zoë is an enthusiastic member of the group sent to colonize Roanoke, despite the risks—and the risks are considerable even before the political machinations of greater powers boil to the surface. That's awesome. I've always wanted to visit scotland, being scott-irish myself, i hear it's nice there. (i had a friend who went over there to go to college, she said it was incredibly awesome)
There were good points and some not so good points in Warbreaker. The biggest issue is that I felt Warbreaker and Vivenna were guests in the great little book about Susebron and his bride. The natural extension seemed to be to explore how Suse and Siri reform the nation and begin to set the people and the "gods" free. It was quite a lurch to find that no Vivenna and Warbringer were the stars. Go figure.But we've only seen beta versions so far, so maybe some of that got fixed in the copy editorial.
