So Spriggan and me are looking to do something on the 4th? Is anyone up to doing something? Any suggestions as to what to do?

If nothing happens than I will have to go do "family" stuff and Spriggan will likely sleep all day.

Writing Group / Writing Idea of the day

So I came up with an idea for a sci-fi story that I will probably never write, but I figure some of you might be interested.

Starting fact: a fraternal twin who marries another fraternal twin has a greater chance of concieving multiple birth pregnancies than single-birth pregnancies.

Story concept: what would a family be like that only permitted their children to marry people who were fraternal twins, thus having a family where nearly everyone has a twin?

Writing Group / Writing Attachment and Seperation

WARNING: psychology discussion ahead.

So the other day I was talking about how writers/artists/musicians see themselves in relationship to their projects. We talked a lot about how projects can be an extension of that person. This then moved into discussing how authors might feel towards their work and how they might feel towards to criticism of their work.

So I thought I ask about people here about how they feel about their writing. Two areas in particular: attachment and separation.

Attachment, as I'm referring to it here, is when the writer becomes attached to his/her writing. Attachment is when the writing become part of the author. It also seems to be what keeps the writing wanting to write the story.

Separation is when the author detaches him/herself from the writing. Separation happening too early leaves the story unfinished as the author works on other projects. However, separation also has to happen successfully at some point so that the writer can edit, revise, and accept criticism. If the author doesn't separate from the finish product, then moving on to other projects can be difficult.

So with those concepts in mind, how do you attach yourself to a project or separate yourself from a project?

Or, if you would rather argue about the concepts of attachment and separation towards writing and if they apply at all, that would be fine.

Books / Children of Hurin

So I assume there are some strong opinions about this book coming out. There are probably some strong opinions about Christopher Tolkien. So does anyone care to share them?

I'm curious as to what other people are thinking.

So, the project I'm working on is in desperate need of a style guide for the lesson activities we're writing. The current writing format we're using is too academic and not very accessible to students or parents. Since the project is a lot less useful if it is only usuable by people who hold degrees in elementary education or child development, I'm hoping some normal people might be willing to give one of our lesson plans a look. Any feedback would be helpful at this point. The lesson is about 2 pages long plus supplimental material. So any takers?

Writing Group / Writing for really young readers
« on: February 08, 2007, 06:24:57 AM »
So my job has me writing stories for 4-6 year old readers.

I'm finding the process to be a little frustrating and I wonder if anyone here has advice.

The stories have to be short, really short. About a page and about 25 words or so.

The stories have to incorporate rhyme. We are given a target sound to use in the story, such as /-ug/ or /-en/. We usually pick two or three words that fit. We can also use onomatopoeia and names.

All the stories must tie into an playful activity that the children can actually do. If the activity incorporates math, music, dance, art, or drama.

No big words. We incorporate some vocabularly building, but many of the kids we work with are still learning English and we don't want to add to their confusion.

My frustration comes with one team member wanting them to be stories with an introduction, rising action, climax, and denouement. Another team-member prefers the stories to have "rhythm" being more akin to song lyrics. Sometimes we get both, rarely and only after a lot of work.

I have no sense of rhythm, so making song lyrics is frustrating. I get the story plotting part, but that seems to get thrown aside for more lyrical verse. So a lot of the lyric stories make no sense and are just dumb. I'm not sure how much they care about the grammatical or story comprehension development of the children.

Opinions? Suggestions?

Role-Playing Games / TWG Ever-Changing Dungeon
« on: January 18, 2007, 04:13:17 AM »
So for fun, I’d thought of a forum game for the RPG section. I call it the Time-Waster’s Guide Ever-Changing Dungeon. It consists of members posting descriptions of one room in a vast dungeon that encompasses the imaginary universe.

Each post consists of the following five elements:

Name: Please give you room a cool name.

Start: list here which exit you are building off of from a previous post. For example: if the previous post had an exit called “down the rabbit hole” your start section should say “down the rabbit whole.”

Description: describe your room. What’s in it, who’s in it, physical dimensions, and obvious features. Please refrain from being long-winded and only include the stuff a game-master would read out loud to the group of players.

Event: put everything that could happen to the characters while in the room. List details about creature or traps and every thing you can possibly think of the player characters doing in this room.

Exit: list the exits from the room. Please limit the number of exits you include to one or two.

Don’t worry about game system or statistics. Mostly, I like the idea of this just being a thread where people can generate ideas or just practice writing descriptions. People can adapt the individual rooms to what ever game they are play. Likewise, don’t worry about what characters may be entering the room. Sure you could plant a trap for a greedy character or place the long lost parent of another character in your room, just please don’t plan it for a specific character played by a specific person. Leave things adaptable.

Other things you might consider. Just call characters PCs and gamemasters or dungeonmasters GMs for consistency. You may also give hints as to what lies ahead, but please don’t try to railroad the next person. Please be both creative and cooperative.

Please only have one post per exit.

If you wish to comment on a room or on this thread, that will be done in a seperate thread that will be created later.

I’ll get things started.

Movies and TV / Casino Royale
« on: November 20, 2006, 01:19:46 AM »
I saw this yesterday and was surprised at how good it is. I grew up seeing a lot of Bond movies, but I wouldn't say I'm a fan. Casino Royal is definitely a new direction for the Bond film franchise.

Has anyone else seen this? Is anyone writing a review?

Because it causes such a furor among some members (and the boards needs to be more active), I found this article:

The most representative State

To be honest, I'm a little dissapointed that Utah is not considered to be more freakish. I knew places like New York and West Virginia had their freak on, but honestly, I thought Utah would make a better showing.

Everything Else / Class help!
« on: May 30, 2006, 06:02:06 PM »
So I'm wondering if anyone on TWG would like to help me out with my class projects?

I have a couple of surveys I need to have people fill out in the next week or so.

The first survey is for Utah county people. Since I'm in  a group of all women, it is about relationships. I wanted to do a  survey about racism between elves and dwarves, but they didn't think that was a real issue. Apparenlty, dating and marriage are the only things women scientists consider worth researching.

The second is a questionaire for married couples. I need both partners to aswer the questionaire. I promise it will bring marital bliss...or something.

Either questionaire takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Please help.  :'(
