Movies and TV / Sci-Fi Channel

Now that Battlestar Galactica has ended spectacularly, there is some debate going on about the future of the Sci-Fi Channel. Adding to the discussion is that Sci-Fi plans to change its name to SyFy.

John Scalzi has posted a nice editorial about the change.

So Thoughts? Opinions? Ranting?

So they're giving up on Earth.

Dee is dead.  :'(

A lot of other people are thinking of killing themselves.

Starbuck is dead...and isn't dead ???

The 5th cylon is ... Helen  ???

And apparently, we're all cylons.

I'm not taking a lot of what was shown at face value. I'm still pleased with the show and I'm hoping it ends well. If the series ends on a depressing note or a cliffhanger, I will have to strangle someone.

Role-Playing Games / D&D 4th Ed.

Since it has now been officially released, thoughts?

My inititial scanning of the books tells me that it is a very different game than what has come before. It feels a lot more like WoW and a lot less like original D&D. There is a greater emphasis on combat and less focus on non-combat situations, which is a little disappointing to me. However, I've heard from play-testers that may not be entirely true. Many say non-combat situations actually run a lot smoother and have more variety now.

What are the pros and cons of giving books content ratings?

Role-Playing Games / RPGs and cheating

I can understand people getting upset over people blatantly disobeying rules, but I wondering if anyone really looses sleep over having not seen a roll.

Apparently its a big sin for a GM not to see every as it gets rolled. Honestly, I rarely ever watch my players rolls. They could be lying to me, but I don't care. I got sick of being paranoid that my players might be cheating on their dice rolls years ago.

Others feel differently.

So what do you think about cheating in rpg games? Should players fudge dice rolls? Should GMs fudge dice rolls? Should rules be ignored?

I see a lot of potential for this, except I'm sure every player will want to be Doctor Who. Course, maybe the setting is before all the other Time Lords were killed off.

Everything Else / volunteerism

So as of last week, I no longer volunteer at the mental health center where I've donated my time running various groups for the past 3 and half years.

So, since I've gotten used to volunteering around 100 hours per year, I'm wondering where I should volunteer next. I can't continue at the mental health center because it could conflict with my job. I also work during school hours, so volunteering with school projects is generally out.

So basically, I'm looking for a place in the community where I could volunteer my time that's in the evening and would only take an hour or two a week. Also, it would be nice if it were something where I could see more of a direct impact in helping people and the tasks asked of me aren't too menial. So any suggestions?

So I've been meaning to ask about this, does anyone around here game online regularly?

I'm not talking about MMOs, but playing regular pen-and-paper rpgs over the internet. Things like OpenRPG and other programs seems to make this a much more feasible option than it used to be in the past.

So does anyone have any experiences with this they could relate?

So there are a lot of new scifi/fantasy shows this season. (yay!)

I've only seen the pilots for two: Bionic Woman, and Reaper

Bionic Woman was okay. I like the actress playing Jamie Summers, but the rest of the cast has yet to impress me. It seems as though the show will take a Alias approach to plotting. I'm glad they replaced the deaf sisters from the previews.

Reaper is hillareous. It makes use of witty dialogue and the guy playing Satan is really funny. This show could easily fill the void left by Joss Whedon.

So this is the scenario:

A fairly socially innept person of moderate physical attractiveness walks up to you and says: "I've just had the Spirit tell me that I should marry you." (a not so uncommon occurance among certain religious groups)

Co-worker response (female): Starts crying "Really? I've been praying for someone to say just that. I just came from the doctor and even though I'm a virgin--I'm pregnant. I been praying for someone to help me raise my child."

My response (male): Give her a big hug "I'm so happy I found you. I just learned I have only one year left to live and I need someone fertile to be the bearer of my children."

Other possible responses?
