1. For a bond to pass to a when all parties are still living all said parties must be together (mentioned in KoD about Nyneave getting Lan's Bond)...under normal circumstances i believe the Finn's doorway being destroyed "broadend the gap" between the worlds severing the bond
2. Cadsuane better darn well teach Rand to cry and laugh again...nothing else matters

Whatever Cadsuane teaches Rand, I think will result in Lews and Rand finally melding into one conscience. But before that happens something traumatic needs to happen to knock Rand down a few steps. I don't think that it'll be anything physical because he lost his hand and it didn't phase him, that's why I think someone close to him will die. That would get him thinking, what's the point. That would open the door for Cadsuane to walk in and counsel him.

If Rand is going to laugh again, he's going to need to forgive himself at some point. Maybe when he has Lews memories at his disposal he'll see everything in a different light?

So after reading Chapters 1 and the prologue any new theories as to what's going to happen next?

Here's a quote from the Dragonmount review of TGS:
Quote
There is a scene towards the middle of the book that was so dramatic and intense, that I … I don’t even know to say it. As a long time fan of the novels, it rocked me to read it. I had to set the book down and let it soak in. Remember the intensity of Dumai’s Wells at the end of Lord of Chaos? This is like that, minus the armies. . I am certain that in the years ahead, we’ll run polls on DM for the “Best Scenes in the Series”, and this will be one of the popular choices. Trust me. You’ll know it when you read it.

In the prologue, the Forsaken (sorry I'm horrible at remembering names) are going to make Rand hurt. Rand is also losing his mind just a little bit and is having trouble controlling Saiden. I think this is pointing towards someone close to Rand getting killed, Min perhaps. Maybe the Forsaken will kill him/her or Rand will accidentally kill him/her.  That would stir the waters if it were to happen don't you think?

I think that it was Ookla and Bookstore that said that Rand wasn't going insane, and the more I think about it the more I think that there right. I know I'm going out on a limb here, but I think Rand suffers from split personalities.  He's accepted that he's the Dragon Reborn, but not that he's Lews Therin Reborn.

I think that's what Cadsuane is going to help him with. She's going to help Rand understand that Rand is Lews and Lews is Rand, that Lews isn't trying to take over Rand, but that their the same person.  When that happens he'll probably have to learn to grieve and forgive himself.  Cadsuane is kind of a mother figure, so she's perfect for the part, and then Rand can be happy.

What are your thoughts? Any other theories out there?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Book 13 Title
« on: September 19, 2009, 11:11:20 AM »
Personally, I think that tCSoWHiCtRWaSaHP is a much better title than either tGS, ToM, or AMoL.

So... Towers....

we've got the Black and White Towers, the topless towers of Cairhein, the tower of Ghenjei, and the seven towers of Malkier.

anyone thinking it's Malkier?

I also read that some people are thinking that its about the Seanchan, apparently they have towers too, thirteen of them actually.  As far as Malkier, I think there's hints of Lan's kingdom being reborn in the recently released prologue.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Where can we buy "What the Storm Means" ebook?

I don't mind buying the prologue. It's only a couple of bucks. You can probably find enough spare change in your car or your couch to buy this. It's over  1 1/2 hours long.

People go and spend $10 on a 90 minute movie, and then go buy the book or vice versa. It's just new media. Start thinking of it as supporting new authors as opposed to getting ripped off.  The more successful Brandon Sanderson is the more likely they are to go looking for the "Next Brandon Sanderson."

I've read peoples reaction regarding this chapter on other sites, and do you know what amuses me?

For years, I've been reading people complain about Robert Jordan's writing style, and now they complain because it's not Robert Jordan's writing style.  They're right, it isn't RJ's writing, but i kinda chock that up to the fact that he's dead. If he wasn't dead, they of course would be complaining about his writing style. Which just leaves me scratching my head wondering why some people still bother to read this series.

My opinion of this chapter is that Brandon Sanderson did  a great job, and I'm even more excited to finish this series than I was before. I easily got lost reading the chapter, so lost in fact, that I was surprised when it ended. I was almost expecting the  whole book!

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Favourite book

Mistborn wins for me.  Honestly, Kelsier was my favorite character of the whole series.  He was complex, thoughtful, funny, and extremely intelligent.  He stood before the Dark Lord and stuck up his little finger (figuratively speaking of course).  The other books were quite good, but some of the magic was lost after Kel left the picture.

That quote about says it all for me.

Brandon Sanderson / A Song Inspired by Elantris ~ Sarene

I stumbled upon this this morning....check it out.

http://www.sfsignal.com/archives/2009/03/20-questions-with-john-anealio/

Scroll down about 1/4 of the way through the interview to find the song.  Is it any good??   Well, my expectations weren't very high, but it was better than I expected.  Reminds me of a late '70s early '80s sitcom theme song.  Perhaps the show Alice if anyone is old enough to remember that show.

I'm surprised so many people dislike those covers.  I like the simplicity of them.

As far as the cover to TGS, I'm starting to see why Tor has stuck with Darrel Sweet.  As ugly as that cover is people are still talking about it.  What more can you ask for from a cover?

Stumbled across this over at A Dribble of Ink.  What do you think?

I like them!  I wish whoever is in charge of designing covers in the UK would come over and work in the US.

It's done? Hehehehee hahahahaha MUAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!  ooo, I can't wait. so how long do you guys think before we'll get to read it?

I would guess that it would be released next June/July.  I doubt Tor would want to release this book too close to the next Wheel of Time book.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Sanderon's WOT without reading the series?
« on: July 06, 2009, 04:07:14 PM »
Was afraid of that.  But considering book 10 got 1500 1 stars out of 2400 reviews, and he is a known padder, it just doesn't make sense for me to waste my time reading 1000s of pages of description just to enjoy more sanderson books.

Oh well.

I don't want to be one of those people who get insulted because someone doesn't like a book that I do, but I think that these books are worth giving a shot.  Don't worry about what people say about book 10 because you'll know long before that whether or not this story interests you.

Robert Jordan did a great job of writing a large story that won't overwhelm you.  In book 1 your introduced to all the main characters, and they stay together for a few books then gradually separate into their own POV's.  Each character then meets other characters and by around book 7 or 8 there are so many POV's that not all the character are in each books.  That's about the time that the story appears to slow down a little  Brandon talks about the change in writing style and why it was made somewhere, but I have no idea where I read it.  Perhaps someone out there knows, and will link to it.

I was able to read books 1-10 straight through, and I didn't notice most of the complaints that people had with the later books.  But then I didn't have to wait 3-5 years for the next book either, and I suspect that was the major reason for the complaints.  Other than the change in writing style, the story as a whole, moves along pretty smoothly if your able to read all the books one right after the other.

I strongly suggest going to your library and reading a little of Book 1: Eye of the World.  It won't take you 1,000's of pages to find out if your interested in the story or not.  Actually, the prologue in EotW is what hooked me on the series!

Of course if you're not interested then you're not interest, but I thought I'd post this just in case I could persuade you. :)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Sanderon's WOT without reading the series?
« on: July 04, 2009, 12:45:55 PM »
I just discovered Mistborn and am mostly through the first book.  Then I found out that he is going to be writing 3 WOT books.  I have no interest in the series because it completely clashes with the style of books I like(long winded, overly descriptive).

Does anyone know if these 3 books will be readable and understandable for someone unfamiliar with the series?

If not, it is disappointing to me, but in a few years I guess he will get back to writing his own stuff again.

I don't know how you could enjoy the WOT's final three books without reading all of them.  I remember when I started the first book Eye of the World, and I spent half my time reading the glossary and the other half reading the novel.  In the first book they talk about Saidar, Saidin, ta' veren, Aes Sedai, Aiel, the Dragon, false Dragons, the Dragon Reborn, all those terms and more, and then you have to learn all the characters.

If you start on book 12, then basically, you'll be thrown in the middle of a huge battle w/ tons of different characters carrying on their own ongoing storyline, using terminology that may not be explained anymore.......I suppose if you're a fan of Steven Erickson this would be a dream come true (Just a lighthearted dig at an author I tried to get into, but could not get into)....

I would suggest finding a used book store, and picking up a copy of Eye of the World, and give it a try.  Most people who complain about this series have been following it from the very beginning.   It does bog down a little in the middle books, but the storyline as a whole moves pretty smoothly.  I don't like gratuitous detail either, but this is still my favorite series.  Give it a try if you haven't already.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Favorite Authors...Where does Brandon Rate?
« on: July 03, 2009, 01:24:54 PM »
Fantasy is my favorite yet least read genre, so I don't have many fantasy authors on my list but here it is:

10)  George R.R. Martin - Fantasy

9)     Tad Williams - Fantasy

8 -    Bernard Cornwell - Historical Fiction

7)     Michael Connelly - Mystery

6)     Nelson Demille - Suspense/Action

5)    Brandon Sanderson - Fantasy

4)    Steven Pressfield - Historical Fiction

3)    Robert Jordan - 1st fantasy author I ever read, so he'll always be tops on my fantasy list.

2)    Vince Flynn - Political Thriller

1)     Mario Puzo  -  The author that got me back into reading will always top these lists for me.

There you go.  My Top Ten list.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Others writing Wheel of Time?
« on: May 24, 2009, 05:38:01 PM »
Would Wheel of Time be accepted by readers if it was written by authors other than Jordan or Sanderson?  What would happen if, after AMoL, the market was flooded with WOT novels by many different authors?  Wouldn't the new novels, if written poorly, ruin the original series, by discouraging new readers from reading them?  What if, after 10-20 years after AMoL, Brandon Sanderson were to return to WOT.

Imagine the fanfare. Imagine the excitement. Brandon Sanderson, NY Times bestseller, returns to WOT. Uses RJ's "Lost Notes" to finish the WOT prequel.  Wouldn't that be the best way to reinvigorate an old series?  From there other authors could explore the world creating there own new characters and storylines.

I'm not against others writing in the WOT universe.  I do believe though that RJ's characters should only be written by Brandon Sanderson, and that Tor should wait a decade or two before starting to writing them.
