I second this hope!
A lot of people describe Scalzi’s Old Man's War novels as military science fiction, but I would classify its sequel Zoë’s Tale as a space opera. It’s a story about, well, Zoë, a teenage girl whose parents are invited to take leadership roles in building a colony on a new planet. Zoë is an enthusiastic member of the group sent to colonize Roanoke, despite the risks—and the risks are considerable even before the political machinations of greater powers boil to the surface. Leviathan is YA Steampunk. It was decent, but it suffers from being the first book in a series (i.e. not much happens). We reviewed it on Elitist Book Reviews (thanks for the easy link wilson). Just keep in mind, it isn't really SF.
The Midnighters series by Westerfeld is YA Urban Fantasy. I enjoyed it for what it was. It isn't really SF.
The method of writing isn't "logical", they'd argue. Imagination isn't logical. Ideas come from this strange place which no one can really explain.
