I second this hope!

Books / Re: What are you reading, part 3

A couple nights ago, I read Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. The BBC did a mini-series based on it a few years ago, and it's really good. I heartily recommend it to anyone who is a fan of things like Pride and Prejudice (without the zombies, although I do need to read that one too). Only, North and South is a million times better than Pride and Prejudice in both story and characters. And complexity. It's just awesome. I stayed up until 5:40am to finish it. I only got 2 hours of sleep that night...miserable, yet totally worth it.

As for now, I am finally reading Way of the Wolf....Yes. It took me a really long time to start it, but oh well. I'm only 60 pages in and I already really like it. A lot. It's probably best that I waited this long to read it. I have more time available to spend on a relatively longer series.

I just found out my school accepted my deferment, which means I won't be going back to school next month. Not that I was going to if it was declined, but at least this way I don't have to re-apply for the whole school.

Oh, I'm perfectly happy with Kaspersky (I feel almost the same way about it as my sister does, and she refers to it as her best friend... ::)). My dad knew exactly what was wrong with it when I'd called him about it. I just wish I'd had him look at it sooner, because it took 3 days and it was while Kaspersky was down that the virus sent the first round of e-mails. I'm sure it'll catch whatever's on here. It's already found 3 adware, a virus, and a trojan, and it says it's still got about an hour left of the scan....

Thanks, guys. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

As for my virus scanner, it's Kaspersky. About a week ago, though, it wasn't working (kept saying the blacklist was corrupted) and that's actually around the time when this thing with my e-mail started. I haven't run a full scan with it since it went down. I'm doing so now, and it should catch anything that's there. If not, I guess I'll just have to have my dad clean my computer....again.

I'm grumpy because someone's doing something to my e-mail account. But I don't know exactly what or how to stop it. They keep spamming my contacts with e-mails but there's no trace of it in my sent messages, which I have set to save every message that is sent from my e-mail. I doubt changing my password will change anything, since I'm about 99% sure that they don't have the password. Unless they really did hack it, and didn't try to phish for it....I hope I don't have to delete my account. That would sad. I've had it since I was in 7th grade....

Last night at a church activity, we played Human Foosball. You know, like the table game foosball with the soccer players that you control on the bars and such? Yeah, a life-size version, kind of. Anyway, the two people on either side of me kept taking every single ball that came my way that was even remotely possible for them to take.

Now, this was frustrating because it made me feel useless to the team, however, I can deal with uselessness. What I cannot deal with is when the ball comes up and starts coming down practically directly over my head, making for a perfect head-butting shot, and when I go to do just that, I find that the guy next to me had the same idea.

I have black eye now. Only, it's a black eye where the bruise is only on the eyelid, and a little bit above it, making my eyelid droop. And it hurts like heck. Especially when I sneeze. And what makes it worse is that the guy didn't even apologize. He just pretty much went on playing and then looked over, smiling, and said 'Is that where I hit you?' pointing to my head....

Books / Re: Sci-Fi authors

Leviathan is YA Steampunk.  It was decent, but it suffers from being the first book in a series (i.e. not much happens).  We reviewed it on Elitist Book Reviews (thanks for the easy link wilson).  Just keep in mind, it isn't really SF.

The Midnighters series by Westerfeld is YA Urban Fantasy.  I enjoyed it for what it was.  It isn't really SF.

Ah. Yes. For some reason, I correlate Westerfeld to sci-fi, since I've only read Uglies (which I know is YA Sci-fi)...I don't know why, since I knew Midnighters is Urban Fantasy and I remember on the review that Leviathan is Steampunk....

guessingo--I know exactly what you mean about being done with vampires, but I would say give Vampire Earth a shot. The 'vampires' in it are a different sort of vampire....And when I say 'different' I don't mean sparkly-different...Just read it and you'll understand.

I'm happy that my years worth of contacts came in today. Contacts are so much better than glasses.

Yeah, I really like YA. I definitely enjoy 'adult' stuff, but there's something about YA that I just like. BSG's site reviewed Leviathan. They liked it, and they're also big fans of the 'grown-up' stuff....

However, as it's the first book in a trilogy, I'd say check out Uglies first if you're gonna pick up Westerfeld. The world is really rather cool. It's dystopian, but...I thought it was awesome. Of course, it's also one of the first dystopian books I'd read, so maybe that had something to do with my loving it. I don't know. Either way, it was some good sci-fi, even with it being YA.

Everything Else / Re: Chaos Theories
« on: February 21, 2010, 11:37:58 PM »
I rather enjoyed that article. Makes complete and utter sense to me. I get similar reactions, as I'm an English major, Geology minor (well, partial geology minor). One arts, one sciences. My choice makes sense to me, but when I say what my major is to the Geology people, they can't figure it out. English? But this is the sciences....

Also, oddly enough, I understand myself a little better after reading that. Understanding people's reasoning is something that interests me. I've been told I'm extremely logical and analytical, and that whole paragraph about emotional logic struck me as being right. If I don't understand why a person would do something, I think it out logically until I do understand. And you're right. Characters should be written the same way. They're people in a story. Write them as if they are people.

And lastly, this:
Quote
The method of writing isn't "logical", they'd argue. Imagination isn't logical. Ideas come from this strange place which no one can really explain.

It bugs me when people say this, because most of the time they're talking about fantasy and how the author who wrote a certain piece of work doesn't have to make sense in their writing. It's fantasy, and fiction, and the writer can write it however they want to....I disagree with that, but agree with your statement later in that paragraph. The combination of the ideas needs to be logical, even if the ideas themselves are not. The plot needs to make sense. It doesn't matter if it's fantasy or a paper for an English class--logic is crucial.

Oh, and laser-eyed sharks sound awesome...Looking forward to that. Do they have anything to do with Shiro? :P

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Lost Season 6 = Well of Ascension
« on: February 21, 2010, 09:28:47 PM »
Hmm. Now I'll be looking for Mistborn comparisons as I watch Lost. And at the rate I'm cruising through the episodes (before Wednesday evening, I'd only seen 3 episodes of the show, and I saw those about 2 1/2 years ago) I'll probably be up to S6 in a month. Started on Wed at 7pm and as of midnight last night, I hit ep 14 of S2....It's a rather addicting show, although I am very easily entertained.

Chris, if you wanted to watch the show, hulu has all the episodes of all the seasons up right now....This is how I'm watching it.

Scott Westerfeld. He's sci-fi for young adults. I haven't read his Midnighter series, but I want to (same with Leviathan). His series that I have read is Uglies and it was pretty darn good...except the last book. He should've kept it as a trilogy.
