Brandon Sanderson / Re: For the Crew: Elmandr's Bet *SPOILERS*
« on: November 14, 2008, 06:32:48 AM »
I wish I wasn't new to these boards....It would've been fun to participate in this little trial. I would've voted guilty just to see him eat a hat. I don't think I'd've been the only one.

I don't think it matters if he didn't think anyone would take it seriously. There's always a chance someone will. Like Chaos.....In times like these, you should make sure your end of the bet is, at least to some degree, not hindering bodily health. I'm thinking hat-eating could cause some digestive problems. I could be wrong about that, though....

Regardless, bring on the video!

Thanks. My fear is that he'll go to Twin, but it will be after I go back to Rexburg....So I miss him both times, barely. Of course, my dad would at least get to meet him, so we'd get signed copies, but still. It's just not the same. And you're right--what can you do? In my case, not a whole lot. That's what happens when you're a poor college student and don't have a car.

It wouldn't affect me so much if I were in your position. I'd wish he'd be coming to the area, but if he doesn't, there's not a whole lot I'd be able to do except for wait. With this, he's coming within 2 hours of where I live. If I'm in Rexburg, it's 30 minutes....And if I can't make it when he's THAT CLOSE?...Yeah, I'm not going to be happy. In fact, I'll be downright disappointed.....Hence my hope.

He'll be doing book signings around the IF area during thanksgiving week.

Thanks. Do you perchance know the day? BYU-I is out of school that whole week, so I won't be in the area for 9 days...Do you also possibly know where ELSE he's going in Idaho? At least, the southern half? South of Boise.....I know it's a ridiculous hope, but I'm crossing my fingers that he'll come to Twin. I really want to meet him to tell him personally what a genius I think he is.

(Secret Bonus Scene: "Well look, that hill is red. The evil force of doom oppressing us sure has style.)

Haha! I LOVED that part! I busted up laughing and my roommates were looking at me all weird. So I read it to them. They got a kick out of it too. Breeze rocks my world. I was so glad his humor was back.

For me, that's why WoA isn't as good as the others. It's the whole development of the characters--which is really cool that they change, but they lost the humor that Kell emphasized so much. I also loved the fights scenes and the plot and everything about FE and HoA. But I did enjoy the political intrigue that made of WoA. Just not as much.

It's the sheer awesome-ness of the plot and the action, and the semi-reverting back to the old humor that makes HoA my favorite. Plus, I loved the development of Spook's character. He was always the odd one out before, because he was part of the crew, but he was always in the background. In this, he proved his worth to the crew, oddly enough with the help of Ruin.

And I loved his fight with the Thugs where he got stabbed. It astounded me what he could do JUST from Tin. The whole change of the wind, so he knew a sword was coming at him, and he could feel the vibrations in the ground, so he knew where the person was standing, and that someone was attacking him from behind. I was like "WOW!" It's probably one of my favorite scenes. After Kell's Inquistor fight and Elend's Atium burning/Vin's Godly help when he's fighting Marsh.

I am not in the least beat sad that Vin and Elend died and I am not disturbed by how Elend died.  I loved the characters, but their sacrifice was worth it.  And Elend's grueseome death did not go un-noticed.  Perhaps it was such a gruesome death that gave Sazed the courage to wander out into the increasing heat (along with the bodies dropping out of the sky of course).

Decapitation?  Seems like a fitting death from Ruin.  Furthermore, once Elend's body later pops up with a head it attests to Sazed's power as a God.

It was the gruesome-ness of the death that bothered me the most with Elend's decapitation. I mean, really. Decapitation CAN'T look pleasant. I don't think it's possible.

I think I'm still bothered by it because somehow, in my first read-through of the end, I skipped (and I really don't know HOW I did it) the part where Spook found their bodies. And so I still had the headless corpse thing in my head, and I was thinking that's how he ended up. But then the next day, I read the end again, and I came across that. It made me feel much better....And it does show Sazed's power, which is cool.

This is exactly the case with Vin.  Throughout the series, she had come up against skilled, dedicated opponents whose defeat strengthened and expanded her character: Shan, the Lord Ruler, Zane, the Inquisitors.  After acquiring the power and intellect of a god, there really was no further enhancement she could acquire; it would have denied the premise of the entire cosmology for her to have been able to defeat Ruin without giving up herself as well, since her power was exactly balanced with his and there was none greater.

True. I never thought of it that way, but it totally makes sense. And it also explains why I wasn't bothered much by Vin's death. It just seemed right. Not that Elend's seemed WRONG, but....yeah.

And about the whole resurrection thing...I think that bringing them back with the knowledge that they have at the end of this would defeat the purpose of their sacrifice. So I agree with your sentiments on that. But I still wish that they could have an end. But then another little part of me says "They DID have an end, and it was a great one."...Right now, the second voice is winning the debate. In a couple hours, that could very well switch, though. I just can't seem to stop thinking about the end. It was too good....

I know the reason why they died. I understand that, and I have no problems with it. I don't even really have a problem with Vin dying, even. It's Elend that gets me. I knew he couldn't really beat Marsh, but I had a hope that MAYBE he would. And to be honest, it's not even really that he died that affects me. It's HOW he died.

Decapitation? Really? I don't think it fits the character. I really don't. I mean, it works, yes. And it makes sense that Ruin would do that--because he's ticked that he lost his body, and sure El's dying from the chest wound, but let's make it final. That makes it easier to rub into Vin's face (speaking of which, I loved that part where Ruin's like "HA! I killed him! How do you like that?").....

I don't know. I've got so many mixed emotions about the end. I LOVED it, but I wish that they hadn't died. And yet, their deaths worked so well. I wouldn't want it changed. Even though it hurt (although I really didn't cry a whole lot. I cried more at Kell's death then I did for Elend, which is surprising because I like El a lot more then Kell).

Anyway. I hope Sazed somehow figures out a way to put souls back in bodies. I can't imagine Mistborn without them either, but I think if I get some kind of closure with the characters, it'll be better. The after-life thing just didn't quite do it for me. That said, I don't think they should be in either of the next trilogies. I think they should get a short story. Nothing big, and probably just for the fans--just to end the characters. But authors don't generally do stuff like that....

There's a lot of talk (including from Brandon) about Mistborn trilogy sequels in the main spoiler thread.

Yes, there are. And they all sound deliciously good and make me wish I could travel through time--to when they're published. I'd love to read them right now. But alas, that won't be happening, because as much as I'd love to pull a Hiro, it's just not gonna work...

I really hope I can go to one of the signings he does on his Utah/Idaho leg.....I'm in Rexburg right now, but I'm done with the semester on Dec 12. And then I go home. Sure, home is Twin Falls, but most authors don't make a stop there, even though we have a fairly decent B&N....So if he goes to IF after the 12th, I think I'm going to have to beg my dad to take me up there (although I really don't think it'll take a whole lot of begging since he's a fan of Mistborn too and he's actually the reason I heard about Brandon in the first place...). If the IF signing is after that date, though, I think I'll hope that he'll come to Twin. It's the most realistic stop between IF and Boise, since Poky is pretty close to IF.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Was this deliberate foreshadowing? *spoilers*

Wow. I wish I had my copy of FE with me. Shame I left it when I was home last weekend....This makes me want to read it again, which I wasn't sure I wanted to do so soon--I'm afraid anytime it mentions Elend, all I'll be able to see is his headless corpse, and that's an image I'd really like to get out of my head.

Regardless, this foreshadowing is pure genius. I wonder what other subtle bits he's got in there, and how many I'll be able to find when I get my copy back...

I still need to finish the series. I started it about 3 years ago and got as far as The Fires of Heaven. And then I stopped because it never went to Perrin....But I've heard number 6 is pretty much all Perrin. I know that's a lame excuse to stop a series, but he was my favorite character at that point in time, and I hated that it didn't go to him even once.

About a year ago, I picked up EotW, but I remembered most of it, so I got online to read a chapter-by-chapter summary of each book....I never did catch myself up. So I STILL have to finish it. And I will. Eventually....And now I want to even more, since some people think it's even better than Sword of Truth (which is another series I never finished--got through 4 and then got into other books...my brother's reading them and he's told me some of what's going on up in book 10, and I'm really interested, though...), and I loved SoT.

I've heard RJ has a lot of characters, though, and all the characters get confusing. And he has/had a habit of mentioning a name, and then 3 books later that person becomes a major player in the story....

Brandon Sanderson / Re: What can writers learn from Mistborn? *Spoilers*
« on: November 13, 2008, 05:47:42 PM »
I loved that Elend became Mistborn. I think it's because I loved his character so much, and it made him more equal to Vin. Reminded me of David Eddings in a way--the end of the Belgariad.

Since I'm writing fantasy, the biggest thing I've learned from Brandon--before reading this thread--is the thought put into the magical element. I think it's apparent that Allomancy was thoroughly studied just by all the information in the book, and all the details that get readers thinking about it. Same with Feruchemy and Hemalurgy. It shows me that knowing your world's magical force like the "back of your hand" really adds to the consistency of the book, and the appeal on a fantasy level.

And since I've read this thread, I also see the importance of the little details, and avoiding info dumps in the beginning. That's something that I'm definitely going to apply to my current book. The beginning (of my book) is good, but it could be so much better--and I think taking out some of the info dumps and getting to the action faster will help that.

Oh, I know there's nothing that states that there was each kind of Misting. But there's also no evidence against thinking that....This also makes me wonder if there were Mistings in that group that were Mistings of maybe Nicrosil, or Chromium, or maybe the true External Temporal metals, but we just didn't know it--nor was it mentioned in the book--because the metals weren't discovered.

Hypothetical situation here. I'm thinking it's Chromium that's the external pairing to Duralumin. If I'm wrong, correct me. I wonder what would've happened if, at the exact moment when Vin was trying to take over Marsh, and burning Duralumin, a Chromium misting burned their metal, thus enhancing Vin's soothing. Would it have enhanced her Duralumin? So she'd in essence have a double Duralumin push? Would this have made it possible to control Marsh? What if this happened in the next trilogy, when Marsh isn't under Ruin's control, and if there WAS a Mistborn there.....Or maybe a Soother with a Hemalurgic Duralumin spike? Makes me wonder...

Oh my word. I cannot describe just how much I love HoA. It was incredible! Although I am very sad that Elend and Vin died....More so Elend, though. I have to admit, he had one awesome death. It's so similar to Kelsier's, and yet El's is more HA! In-your-face Ruin/Marsh (as opposed to Kell's I am hope, you can't kill hope, and then getting half his face whacked off)...I mourn for the loss of so cool a character. And I hope that they'll both (El and Vin) be able to come back. Sometime. I don't expect it to be in one of the later trilogies, because I think they've done their part. But maybe a short story. Something for the fans. Nothing big. Just closure. I think it'd be cool.

And since I've read through this entire thread (took me a while, too), I'll say some stuff about that. Allomantic sports would ROCK! I'd love to see it. Heck, I'd love to participate in them....Of course, I've been wishing I was an Allomancer (preferably Mistborn...) since I read FE almost a year ago.

And now I have one question. It's a combination of both Atium not belonging on the chart, and the 16% deal with the mists. If there are only 16 metals, and Atium isn't REALLY one of them, how could the mistfallen be Atium mistings? If you think about it (and I'm probably analyzing this WAY too much, but oh well), there are 16 metals on the chart, not counting Atium and Malatium. Even if we don't know the replacements right now, they're there. And technically Preservation would know about the other 2 (not Chromium and Nicrosil--Atium's base replacement and alloy). So wouldn't it include those in the Allomancers Snapped due to the mist sickness? And not Atium? Because if it includes Atium, that would make it 18 metals. Not 16. And then the percentage gets all messed up.....

Does that make sense? It does in my head, but I'm not sure if I worded it correctly.

Anyway, Brandon. You're pretty much my inspiration of what to do with my writing now. I am in awe over your mad writing skills. Wow. Just...wow.
