Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Gathering Storm - First Impressions *SPOILERS*

I liked the Verin reveal, although I agree it could have been better foreshadowed. If I hadn't read the FAQ, I would have been really surprised.

It's probably like organ donation. It sounds like a great idea, but not everyone is an organ donor because it is too weird or inconvenient or whatever. And I agree the health of the individual is probably a factor.

Well, it seems to me that most people would like to keep their breath if at all possible.  So they would have to be in dire circumstances before considering giving their breath away.  Just my opinion.

It's probably because young children/their families need the money they get from donating their breath and the old, dying people--not so much. Or all the old, poor people have already donated their breaths.

From Dayton, Ohio Storm Leader report
Quote
Q: Will Fain be in the next book?

A: Padan Fain will be seen again.  He’s a mixture of two things – Mordeth’s power, which he got by seeking out all of the evil things that weren’t related to the Shadow, and the Dark One’s Hound.  Brandon said that Fain’s number one goal is to kill Rand, and a close second is to kill the Dark One.  Now that Shadar Logoth has been destroyed, all of the Mordeth power that remains in the world is in Fain.

Sounds like a merge.

Sorry, I just voted for Card.

Card, to me, is very uneven.  He has moments of sheer brilliance, but his series always seem to fizzle out.  Perhaps he should just write stand-alones.

Totally agree about his series, although I do think the Ender series is quite good. But the rest stink.

TGS p. 405 "What? If course I need you, Thom!"  should be "Of course I need you"

I saw another typo in one of the Mat chapters, but I can't remember where now.

ETA: I found a few more while I was looking for the one I forgot.

p. 408-409 "...needed for our custom, " mayor Barlden said. Mayor should be capitalized.
p.412 "Well look at that," Mat said. Insert comma "Well, look at that"
p. 414 "At that moment, the door the inn..." should be "the door of the inn"
p. 527 "Those boxes had give a lot Mat's success..." boxes should be bows

Just finished it  ;D Overall, I thought Brandon did an amazing job. There were a few things that seemed a little out of place for me (esp. Mat), but most of the time I was just wrapped up in the story. I'm guessing that he didn't spend too much time on the Mat chapters as I noticed a couple of typos, so hopefully Mat will be a little more back to normal in the next book. I thought the Egwene chapters and the Rand chapters were both really well written. The Rand chapters were pretty painful to read and the Egwene chapters were just awesome. I loved the "Brandon avalanche" at the end. It's so great to read a WOT book where stuff actually happens again :)

Regarding the hands thing, I would guess that it was either accidental, or it just sounded better than "Rand rested his head on his hand and his nub." That would kind of kill the moment.

I think the original contract was for 4 books in the series, but Brandon is planning on doing 5. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

A couple thoughts for Joe:
The Bowl of the Winds can draw on saidin by itself. Some ter'angreal can do that. (Just so you aren't waiting for a random channeler to pop out.)

Morgase has abdicated the throne, which is irrevocable. This happens right before the Seanchan attack the Whitecloaks and she's thinking about jumping out the window. It's not a huge scene, so it's easy to miss. She's having a difficult time readjusting to life now.

I agree, the scenes with the Forsaken are great. And the action picks up a little later so hang in there. Thanks for the update!

It doesn't matter which hand it is. The forms he were using before were two-handed, so now he needs to relearn the sword with only one hand.

They could just go listen to the podcast. I think the reason no one is guessing the correct person is because no one wants to hear any more about the person. I don't  ;)
