Brandon Sanderson / Re: [Spoilers] Just finished Mistborn... confused
« on: August 11, 2010, 02:39:22 AM »
I think in the case of Mistborn fighting each other, leeching would be useless, actually.  If you're touching someone, THEY'RE TOUCHING YOU TOO!  "Oh crap, we just burned each other out!"

In reality Vin and Ariadne have very little in common other then they are a new comer to the group/lifestyle.  Also I think Ellen Page should play both, but I digress.

Hottest.  Vin.  EVER!

Oh, whoops, I got it backwards.  I think it didn't drop.  I forgot which was which.

Ok, the biggest plot-hole in my mind... he had been hunted by these corporations around the world, but now that Saito waves a magic wand to let him into the US, they're suddenly going to stop?  He had been hunted by these corporations around the world that knew enough about him to know that he couldn't come home and why, but they never thought to find out where he had lived and threaten his children for leverage?  I just... I don't see them being that kind.  That's partly why I think the whole movie was a dream.

He said, "I'm rather dumbfounded."

He has such a way with words.

I can't say that sarcastically and keep a straight face.

And (since the spoiler warning is in the title already and it's speculation) the top dropped. I'm convinced.

I think so too.  That's my way of ignoring a few of the plot holes I found, haha.

I think it's more likely that the script author/director combo and Brandon have a similar sense of what makes a good story.

Although, your analysis is interesting.  I don't think I could take it as far as you have, but some of the characters fit, in part.

Seeing Brandon reference Dragonball Z on Twitter by calling Paolini Goku due to his incredible ability to eat while being skinny as heck made my day.

The bittersweet thing is that no matter how many questions this first book answers, we are going to get so many more questions from it that we will doubtlessly have to wait a long time for answers.

I personally don't think Hoid is a Shard.  He does clearly have epic powers, though.

Hehehe, I just recently gave my Animorphs collection to my nephew.  I never made it to the end *sigh*

Dudemeister, look where you are. Have you seen a purist for miles?

Not exactly, but I fear them.

You guys can be real snobs sometimes.

I promise you, anything I say is merely my own opinion and I mean no harm with it.  If you enjoy the books, that's fantastic for you!  I even mostly enjoyed the first one, but it has greatly faded for me since.  I could not read the second one.

But here's what I tell the kids at work: I'm just glad that someone managed to get you to read, even if it is something I would never recommend.  You get kids to read Eragon, soon, they might read Harry Potter, which could lead to Narnia and LotR which could lead to WoT or Mistborn/Elantris/Warbreaker... yada yoda yada.

Honestly, I was all for Eragon when I read Eragon, although even then (I think I was 16 or so?) I noticed that it was a very derivative work.  One of my friends described it quite accurately as "Star Wars, but on dragons and without lightsabers."  And while most of us love Star Wars, it is also derivative.

And you know what?  I think I could have gotten over that.  I can read Eragon when I want "fast-food fantasy" and Mistborn when I'm looking for a filet mignon, and not be bothered by the fact that they are in two entirely separate leagues of literary skill.  What bothered me was that when Eragon became a big hit, universities worldwide offered him free creative writing classes and he turned them down because he thought his style was developing just fine on its own and he didn't want other people influencing his work.  That logic works just fine, when you're great.  But when you're merely good or mediocre, I think you should be less pretentious and accept the help.

Then I tried to read Eldest and determined that based on what I had seen, he really was a one trick pony, and I had to quit.

And thus, the mystery only manages to deepen.

I think it would only be fair to point out that we have taken a thread about two specific Shards and turned it into a tangential discussion on Hoid, the Cosmere, and Adonalsium.  Not that I'm complaining, haha, but purists might start throwing things.

I've been trying to share the love, my problem is that most of my friends that read don't read fantasy.  And if they do, they only read popular fantasy (such as Harry Potter or Twipuke).  I know for a fact that I have bought 3 copies of Final Empire for friends that have not read it.  The combined power of my nagging and purchasing the books have yielded no results.
