Movies and TV / Ultraviolet
« on: March 03, 2006, 12:14:32 PM »
Well, the creator of "Equilibrium" is releasing another film entitled, "Ultraviolet"

Here is Eric D. Snider's synopsis after NOT seeing a screening:

Quote
"ULTRAVIOLET"
(1 hr., 28 min.; rated PG-13 for sequences of violent action throughout, partial nudity and language)

From writer/director Kurt Wimmer ("Equilibrium") comes this futuristic sci-fi thriller starring Milla Jovovich as a genetically altered super-woman who must save her race of genetically altered super-people from being wiped out by a government that sort of regrets having made all these genetically altered super-people. (It seems to me that if you're going to create people who are better than you, you should probably expect that they will turn on you at some point.) It was not screened for critics, probably because it's too AWESOME. Sony was probably afraid we'd write all these 4-star reviews, and then audiences would be afraid to see it for fear it wouldn't live up to how AWESOME we said it was. That, or it sucks.

That said, I'm going to see it.  "Equilibrium" being my favorite film of all time is enough to give Wimmer the benefit of the doubt no matter how silly the premise sounds.

Everything Else / Yet Another code question posed to the gurus
« on: November 02, 2005, 01:31:59 PM »
Ok.  I'm about ready blow my top.

I've got the following code in my webpage:

<body class="body" onLoad="SetMenu()">

This triggers the javascript function SetMenu after the page is loaded.  It works perfectly in IE.

Mozilla ignores it.  Why?  Surely such a vanilla functionality is duplicated in Firefox?

But for the life of me I can't figure out what it is.  I've searched the web and the forums and they all either vaguely refer to the function call in Firefox or they imply that the onLoad, as I've got it written, works in IE and Firefox both.  It doesn't.

Can anyone tell me how to do in Firefox what the above code does in IE?  Please? e?  Spriggan? Tage?

Interesting news blurb.

It seems pretty plain to me that Google ought not to be copying works still under copyright without the author's permission.  But I wonder if there are other takes on the matter?

Everything Else / Javascript to Flash question
« on: August 16, 2005, 05:47:06 PM »
Alright.  I've successfully, and may I say easily, made my javascript talk to my embedded flash movie...in IE.  I'm having no luck at all getting it to work in firefox.  Any suggestions?

All I need to be able to do is tell the movie what frame to jump to.

You're kidding right?  Your two sons are named Isaac and Leif?  What the heck for?

Movies and TV / Runelords by David Farland
« on: January 21, 2005, 11:34:38 AM »
Farland, as most of us probably already know, is the pen name of our beloved local fantasy author David Wolverton.

Apparently someone named John J. Kelly is working on the Runelords movie.

After reading the script and bouncing around ideas on how to handle the movie at least this one guy (who, from his info on IMDB, is probably a producer/high level manager type) has read the book (gasp!) and been shocked at how little their ideas for the treatment of the script resembled the book.  His response to this discovery was a desire to fix that and be more true to the original work.  A good sign in my opinion.

It also sounded like Farland himself is not very deeply involved in the production of the movie, which is just the standard Hollywood/book situation.

Anyone else have any news on this topic?

Rants and Stuff / Entropy

Before the Online shopping thread was locked Entropy said:

Skar, lies. Most people, when they find something unexpected on their pc say, 'Oh, I didn't see that before'. You really think not using cookies would drop sales?

While it's appropriate that the thread is now locked I would like Entropy to recant his first sentence here.

I can take being called foolish in the following paragraph, it's just part of an open discussion, but calling me a liar is right over the line.  While we're hurting for members I don't think we're hurting so much that we need to accept this kind of behavior in order to keep them.

Read this question, come up with an answer, and then scroll down to the
bottom for the result. This is not a trick question. It is as it reads.

A woman, while at the funeral of her own mother, met this guy whom she did
not know. She thought this guy was amazing, so much her dream guy she
believed him to be just that! She fell in love with him right there, but
never asked for his number and could not find him afterward. A few days
later, she killed her sister.

Question:  What is her motive in killing her sister?

(give this some thought before you answer, then scroll down)

Answer:

She was hoping that the guy come to this funeral, also.

If you answered this correctly, you think like a psychopath.

This was a question used by a famous American Psychologist to test if one
has the same mentality as a killer. Convicted serial killers were given this
test and many answered the question correctly.

If you didn't answer the question correctly, good for you.

If you got the answer correct, please let me know so I can take you off my
email list, unless that will tick you off, then I'll just be extra nice to
you.

Have a nice day, or not, whichever you prefer . . .

Just please don't hurt me.

Books / Game based books
« on: November 05, 2004, 11:26:11 AM »
So, I just got a Blizzard Insider announcing the free open beta and the street date of WoW.  Just down the page I noticed a book set in the WoW universe by a name I recognized.  Richard A. Knaak.  This guy wrote at least one novel in the dragonlance universe and I liked it  How cool is it to see his name again.

I've enjoyed game based books from warhammer, namely the Felix and Gotrek "slayer" series.

Anything else out there worth reading?
