While I was a big fan of anime when I was a kid I haven't watched any for a really long time. However I noticed that Hulu just added a ton of Anime series to their lineup and thought some of you may get a kick out of it. I am thinking I may start reconnecting myself. It's at http://www.hulu.com/channels/Animation-and-Cartoons/Anime#kind=shows&sort=popularity

Movies and TV / Re: Worst Movie?
« on: November 09, 2008, 08:19:06 PM »
While no doubt Manos, Hand of Fate was a terrible movie, it was never intended to be a big hit. What about movies you went to see because you believed it might be good? I'd like to nominate The Avengers, which was one of the worst movies I've ever paid for. It suffered from an Incomprehensible plot, random editing, rotten acting, and possibly the silliest ending I've ever seen.

I learned my lesson from The Avengers so when I went to see Van Helsing I was smart enough to get my money back. Once it was revealed that vampires laid giant gelatinous glowing green eggs that could only be fertlized in some sort of unholy menage a trois by Frankenstein's monster and a werewolf, I got the hell out!  >:(

Yes in fact I am still a little bitter. I promise you give me $100 million dollars and I can put something together that is no more than half as crappy.

Everything Else / Re: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet, again

If you were looking for one more way to waste time on the web you can hardly go wrong with Super Obama Worldhttp://superobamaworld.com/. It appears the point is to take over Alaska and kill pigs. I can't say I fully understand the premise but perhaps that is half the fun.

Books / Re: Best book you've ever read...
« on: November 07, 2008, 06:30:45 AM »
I know it's been almost two years since the comment was made but I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight unless I respond to the idea that "pulp fantasy" or pulp anything for that matter is unworthy by any standard against so called "classic" works. You take any novel written before 1900 that is still being read today and it was, in its own time, just as frivolous, just as unworthy. Anyone who gets really exposed to shakespeare generally learns to love his writing, but let's face it, he was writing the equivalent of "days of our lives" for his time. His audience wasn't the intellectual elite but the underclass.

Fiction for the masses is what has endured, precisely because it had broad appeal, and so beloved it was passed from generation to generation. The great classic literature 200 years from now will likely include names like Stephen King and Robert Heinlein. While many so-called "important" writers' names will be long forgotten.

As for me, I don't know how anyone chooses a single book as their favorite. Reading the many wonderful titles put forth I recognized several that were my "favorite". One thing is for sure, the same names came up over and over again, and I think our many greats grandchildren will recognize those names just as easily.

Books / Re: Clean Urban Fantasy Recommendations
« on: November 07, 2008, 06:03:47 AM »
You may want to check out Simon Greene as well. His stuff is definitely urban and definitely fantasy but trends toward the silly humor.  He just started a new series beginning with, "The Man with the Golden Torc". It's a kind of James Bond meets Harry Potter. He has another series of books covering a place inside of London called the Nightside. These are sort of noir/hardboiled detective stories. I don't feel I am doing them justice. I've found them to be more than a little addictive.

If he, or anyone can keep making shows like this, I say bring back the musicals! I hated musicals when I was a kid but I could watch this all day long.

Video Games / Re: Why does Runescape ruin everything?!

I started playing due to a recommendation by Orson Scott Card. I'm afraid I haven't shaken the monkey off my back yet, although I think the new star wars mmorpg might do it. Of course then I'm not really freeing myself just swapping monkeys  :-\

If you like Settlers of Catan, you should also check out Puerto Rico. While the format is very different it presents a similar playability. I've always felt that one of Settler's strong points is how every game is so different because of board configuration and the decisions of other players. With Puerto Rico, no single strategy works in every game. Your options are enhanced or limited by the previous player's decisions. It is a resource gathering game also like Settlers.

Settlers of Catan and Puerto Rico are the two most popular games at our house but generally Puerto Rico is more playable in the long term and tends to get played more often as a result.

I'm surprised no one else has asked but does this new world have atium? If atium was the body of Ruin then it would seem when Sazed took up Ruins power he would have reabsorbed all of the atium. New atium then would be bits of Sazed's new powers and weaken him with each newly formed bead. It would seem then that if atium exists it would be much rarer, and mean that Sazed would not be able to control this process.

I guess I am trying to understand why he would want to allow any Atium to make its way into the hands of people or rather out of his control?
