Brandon Sanderson / Re: Warbreaker :: Release Party :: Extras
« on: June 06, 2009, 07:02:32 AM »
Well, it seems to look like I'm no longer going to be able to make this. :(  All of my friends have other things that they have to do, and well, I'm not 100% comfortable driving down by myself with my 97 sentra...

If anyone else lives in Nevada, and is interested in carpooling, shoot me a PM.  But as it stands now, it looks like I'm going to my local Barnes and Noble and picking it up Tuesday.

Hey, at least I have Tuesday and Wednesday off to read the final revision through.  ;D

And then that get's ruined by the review posted in Brandon's blog...

I noticed that too.  Bollocks! I wonder if he put it in there because most of the people who read the blog have already read Warbreaker?

Though, I know a friend or two of mine don't fall into that category.  They wanted to wait for the printed version.  They can spend hours upon hours playing WoW, but they can't spend twelve reading a book on a screen.

Bollocks times two!

As for being fully on topic...

The conversations between Lightsong and Blushweaver were always fun.  Here's my favorite moment with them:
Quote
“And how exactly did we get onto this tangent, anyway?” Lightsong said.  “I swear, my dear.  Sometimes our conversations remind me of a broken sword.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Sharp as hell,” Lightsong said, “but lacking a point.”

There are plenty of moments that I love Denth and Tonk Fah as well:  (Minor spoiler warning.)

Quote
“I’m Denth,” the first man said, taking her hand and shaking it.  “That’s Tonk Fah.”

“Pleased,” Tonk Fah said, taking her hand once Denth was through with it.

“Unfortunately, princess,” Denth said, “we’re here to kill you.”

CHAPTER BREAK

Vivenna’s hair instantly bleached to a stark white.

Think! she told herself.  You’ve been trained in politics!  You studied hostage negotiation.  But. . .what do you do when you are the hostage?

Suddenly, the two men burst out laughing.  The larger man thumped the table several times with his hand, causing his bird to squawk.

“Sorry, princess,” Denth--the thinner man--said, shaking his head.  “Just a bit of mercenary humor.”

“We kill sometimes, but we don’t murder,” Tonk Fah said.  “That’s assassin work.”

I love how he never changes how these two converse with others...it's amazing.

And of course, the reveal on Nightblood: (MAJOR SPOILER ALRET!!!)
Quote
With Nightblood, she and Vasher had spent much time in thought, then finally chosen a simple, yet elegant, Command.  “Destroy Evil.”  It had seemed like such a perfect, logical choice.  There was only one problem, something neither of them had foreseen.

GARR, can't wait!

Yeah, I'll have an update around Fridayish as well.  To be honest, I really don't want to make the drive from here to Provo by myself, especially since my car is '97, and though I believe it would make it...it may try to murder me when I'm through.

I think both times I have read through the series (at least as far as I got...I still haven't gotten through them all), I've really liked Mat.  The first time I read through was in high school, and I started it all-over again in my sophomore year in college, and I think I understood and accepted how the characters acted a lot easier the second time around.  (I despised so many of the characters in high school...I don't exactly remember why...)

Mat is still my favorite, though.  The way he acts is so realistic, and I think I just sympathize with him most.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet (or maybe they did and I missed it), but my favorite female character is Lanfear (though, I really like Min and Aviendha...and Moiraine...oof).  Lanfear has always been an interesting character for me due to her interactions with Rand, even though he really isn't Lews Therin.

I plan on making the drive out there from Nevada.  I actually just took the time off and got everything squared away.

I saw this the other day, and thought I should reply...but I realized that I had locked myself out of my account due to password difficulties.  All figured out now.  :P

I'm going to be bringing a friend or two along as well.  I can't wait to meet Brandon!

I'm glad you liked it, even if it didn't work out for class.

I've read three of Gaiman's novels, but none of his short fiction, so far.

Check them out when you get a chance.  It's a bit odd sometimes, but I like odd.  ;)

Neil Gaiman Short Stroies

A Study in Emerald is Great, as is How To Talk To Girls At Parties.  I wish he had some of his other ones on there.  :(

I recommend "Boobs" by Suzy McKee Charnas. Maybe it's not the best, but hey, its called boobs. Also, it won the Hugo, and I think the Nebula.

Other then that, any short story by Roger Zelazny is awesome. Permafrost and Manna from Heaven were two of my favorites.

In general though, when I am looking for a good short story, I start with the ones that have won the Hugo or Nebula, and a work my way through those first.

I've read "Boobs," and it was indeed a great story.  I'll have to check some of that other stuff out as well.

No problem. I'm always happy to push my reading tastes on people. ;)

Sorry it took me so long to reply to this.  I have been crazy busy, then I forgot my TWG login info....

I read the story, and I actually loved it.  I'm definitely a big fan of music, and I loved the way this story viewed the big timers. :)  Although, I didn't use it for the class, because I didn't think it fit well enough.

Instead, I found Niel Gaiman, who is a fantastic author.  I picked up two of his short story collections (Smoke and Mirrors and Fragile things) and I presented on the story "We Can Get Them For You Wholesale."  Amazing stuff.  If you haven't checked Gaiman out yet, I suggest you do the first moment you get.  He has plenty of stories available online, so you can check it out.

Also, if you'd like to read  "We Can Get Them For You Wholesale," I got the story PDF'd, so just PM me with an email address and I can get you a copy.  :)

I think Reaves is referring to "Firstborn", which I think is more of a novella (novlette?) than a short story. Either way, you can find it here: http://www.tor.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=story&id=10489

I'd recommend "The Girl Who Sang Rose Madder" by Elizabeth Bear, also on Tor.com. It's substantially shorter (though yes, Firstborn is awesome), and Bear has this amazingly compact writing. Worth checking out.

Thanks!  And yes, actually...I would use Firstborn if I could.  I LOVE that story.  But, it's far too long.  I'll check out "The Girl Who Sang Rose Madder" out right now.

Hey all,

Does anyone have a solid short story that they could recommend?  Fantasy preferably...though I'm also up for anything comic (a combination of the two would be awesome :) ).  Anywhere between like 10-30 pages would work perfectly.

I have been trying to get a copy of Dreamsongs by George R.R. Martin, but no one seems to have it in stock in our area.

Thanks!

Brandon Sanderson / Re: what the metals do in feruchemy and hemalurgy
« on: March 20, 2009, 10:45:24 PM »
NicrosilStores Feruchemical speed.  To fill a nicrosilmind, the Feruchemist must tap one of his other metalminds.  The metalmind will release its power more slowly than usual, and proportionally fill the nicrosilmind.  When the nicrosil is tapped, the Feruchemist can draw on a metalmind's power more quickly than he would normally be able to (correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought there was an upper limit to how much Strength Sazed could tap at once; if this is the case, Nicrosil could push that limit upwards...).

I like what you have done with this.  Interesting ideas.

As for the bolded, that, unfortunately, is incorrect.  I think it was in the end of WoA, someone was talking about Sazed regarding how large he grew when tapping strength, unlike a Mistborn, who stays the same general size.  I believe it was stated that as long as Sazed had the strength stored up, there was no limit to the amount of strength he could drain.  It seemed to be the same thing with everything else as well (like weight...he can become as heavy as he wants, as long as he has enough stored.

I always thought that it would be cool if the last word of the series was ... flicker ...

Oh lord no.  Please no.

To be honest, that was one of my favorite parts in the series, and I love what he was doing there, but ending the book with that would ruin everything for me.  I hate stories where nothing ends up being real.

SURPRISE!  It was a dream!

Sorry, I fail at reading.  ;D

How about A Song of Ice and Fire?  A friend of mine actually thinks it's his favorite series (and he's a big Jordan and Sanderson fan).  I was told that magic is low-key and the story he creates is quite...raw.

RM, I and a friend of mine who I recommended Mistborn too are having a similar problem.  After getting into the MB series, it's difficult to read anything else because it's just not as interesting and often not as cleanly written.  She and I have tried to start other fantasy works (me, over the past year, and her, the past few months) and the only major works I have found have either been somewhat contemporary fiction, or the 'His Dark Materials' series by Phillip Pullman.

Read His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass (or Northern Lights, if you will), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.  Amazing story--amazing writing--and characters that feel all too real.

If you saw the movie and didn't like it, don't let it deter you.  The movie, as always, was NOT a fair representation of the book.  (Though, I did like the movie on a couple different levels.)

Also, the series is rather short...so you can burn through it rather quickly.  :)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: RE Entertainment signs deal with EA
« on: January 22, 2009, 06:19:55 PM »
I'm not too optimistic about EA or Red Eagle when it comes to these games, and I highly doubt any movies will be made as long as they have the rights.  That being said, I will withhold final judgement for now.

I can hop into that boat

But, I played the Wheel of Time game for the PC back when it first came out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wheel_of_Time_(video_game)

To be honest, I don't remember it being all too bad.  It entertained me for a while.  But if you read that Wikipedia article, you will see why it had problems.  The discrepancies can be brutal.

OK, I just had a thought....what if Hoid is already in the Wheel of Time? I think that he's that mysterious darkfriend beggar Old Cully. So....Lews Therin will overcome Rand and kick his soul out of his body, and then Rand's soul is going to take over Old Cully and turn him back to the light side, and of course, when Hoid is on the right side all is right in the world.  :)

Or not. Either way, we've got to get Hoid in there somewhere. It will be bigger than when we found out that Bela is the Creator!

Oh no!  Conspiracy theory!
