Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Comprehensive Kandra Thread
« on: September 20, 2008, 04:45:11 PM »
If atium's the crazy supermetal, maybe the Kandra use it for their own magic system, like how Mistborn use it to see the future and Themalurgists (I really hope that's the right one) use it to store age (from the glossary in WOA).  Atium seems to have time altering properties.   Maybe the Kandra need tons of Atium to break free of their weakness to Allomancy.

Of course, the LR could have used the whole gigantic Atium store to buy tons of kandra contracts, but that doesn't make sense when he knows he can just manipulate them.

I dunno.

how would the combat work out?  In the book all the fighting is very three dimensional, with huge jumps and leaping off towers and stuff.  With my (small) tabletop rpg experiences, I've noticed that most of the battles are earthbound, although that could just be my GM's fault.

Thanks!

I wonder how many rulebooks it's gonna have.  Dnd has a bazillion rulebooks for almost everything under the fantasy sun, but I wonder what's gonna be up with this one.  If you have more than one, you have more options for sucking away or monies, but if you do, that decreases our chances of being able to find all the rulebooks offline.

...I'm pretty sure that Vin's anyalasis of the Mist spirit stabbing Elend was mostly accurate.  How else would the MS be able to get Vin to keep from releasing Ruin?  Of course, Vin obviously did some minor changing while she had the power from the WOA, maybe there's other, more subtle results other than Elend becoming Mistborn.

What I want to know is the Origin of Allomancy.  The story says that the LR gave it to the men who helped him reach the WOA, but did it exist before or was it completely created by him?  My theory is that he created it along with the LR mists so he'd have more of an advantage once the power rush from the WOA wore off.

...I've recently discovered Despair.com

They sell demotivation posters. Here are a few of my favorites:

When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. Unless it's really a meteorite hurtling to the Earth which will destroy all life. Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for. Unless it's death by meteor.

My favorite movie ending in the sheer wackiness category is actually the Spongebob Movie.  Watch the last 5 minutes.  It's worth it.

You know, you'd think they'd close Arkham down, what with the sheer number of escapes and incompetent people granting parole and all.

Also, Joker acting as GLaDOS?  HECK YES  ;D

(I read the actual article. Joker takes over the PA system)

One of my friends desperately wants to play as a Kandra, and I was wondering if you'd have Terrismen as well.  Also, how would Mistborn work out?  If you have them as an NPC superclass it's off putting, but if you have it as a starter option, then that puts all the other Mistings out of a job.  Would you have to level up into a Mistborn?

How would running out of metal work too?  It works more (in my mind) like an MP bar rather than anything with rigid numeric value.

Does Ruin have a physical body?  Maybe the reason the HOA had to take in the power rather than release it was because it would seal Ruin within themselves.

Also I forsee an Elend vs. Marsh showdown.  Or Vin.  I'm not picky.

I wanna know more about the Kandra's society and religion and stuff.  That has something to do with the huge secret, I'm sure.

Hi, I'm Spencer, and am currently based near Layton Utah, but plan to go to BYU provo next year.  I got here from the writing prompt forum post at writing excuses, and decided to share.  I like drawing comics and such, but I'm cursed with a short attention span  :-\

I attended LTUE last year, so that's where I first met/heard of Brandon Sanderson and Dan and stuff (I already read Schlock Mercenary)  It was fantastic  :D

I usually write fantasy that's set in either modern day or post-apocalyptic, with one or two wholly original worlds floating in my head.  I guess I should practice on wholly original stuff...

Currently I have two main writing projects, which unfortunately have just started.  One is actually a NaNoWriMo idea that I'll edit when I'm done with it (dang no previous writing rules), and the other is a pretty solidly YA novel.  I only have a couple chapters of both done  :(

I have a couple original ideas in a day... if not, I can fake it easily enough.

...I actually like it...

As you level up, it gives more of a feeling of actually getting stronger.  Every even level you get to you get plus one to practically everything, and the three phases of play (the tiers, you know the epic, paragon, heroic thing) help DMs plan better.  The tiers sort of give you a milestone to how awesome your character can be, and what should be difficult to them according to the rules.

Besides, the skill checks have been condensed, which makes it a lot easier to have characters with completely extraneous abilities like cooking or something.  You don't have to keep track of skill points nearly as much and your experience adds to your skills equally, so you don't have a 10th level rouge who knows nothing about History or something.  Besides, who needed a skill modifier for making rope?  The crafting and profession skills just baffled me.

Writing Group / Re: Writing Prompts!

We really should be getting to the other writing prompts.  My four different man scene is from the pov of a merchant, a wronged nobleman, a prisoner at the gallows, and a servant of the nobleman.  The scene is the prisoner's execution.

This would definitely be too long to post, but I'll put the first lines of each of the characters.

"Execution days were always good for business."

"Finally that filth would get what he deserved, he thought.  Besmirching my father's good name deserves a fate worse than death."

"He felt the cord settle around his neck and breathed a sigh of relief."

"Dust, dirt, lint, all were his mortal enemies.  Spotlessness was his goal and companion, for uncleanliness was undeserving of a prince's household."
