Suggestions Box / Re: What was the worst film ever made?
« on: November 16, 2008, 08:13:44 PM »
I just watched the news Bonds movie, and i have to say that it was less the satisfying.

Really it was 90 minutes of shooting, punching, falling, and explosions. Oh, and beautiful woman were eVerywhere. Apparently Bonds is the only male agent out there.

Pssh.

I was hoping i'd sit through a fantastically written script, except i find that there was hardly any dialogue. Really, the bare minimum.

And, to top it off, it lacked its essential kick ass cars. WTH? This is a 007 film, where are the Aston Martins, and what the hell is this Ford Edge doing here?

Really, you guys serious?

Its sad, i knew making the adjustment to this new Bonds would be hard, but the failure of maintaining other essential parts of 007 just made it that much more difficult. Its a shame, really.

Everything Else / Re: Whay you do and why you hate it!

I've already taken a few exams. No biggie. I;ve never had a problem with tests, research papers, and the like. They all come easy to me.

The hardest thing about being a college student is surviving. I'm always hungry, always penniless, and always sleep deprived.

And i love it!

I'm not sure why, i just love being on the very edge of disaster. There is something about being on your own that makes me feel good at the end of the day. Despite everything.

Honestly, i'm having the greatest tough time of mylife.

Plus, the best thing about college is the variety. Not women, courses; Eastern theatre, medival studies, literary interpetation, anthropology, archealogy, chemistry...

Seriously, my brain has a sweetooth for learning and college is a candy shop.

Its awesome!

*peaks in with wary eyes*

Hey guys. What happens? What goes on? Anything interesting at all?

No?

Ok.

I know you guys think that i'm welshing on the bet, but thats not it. Not really.

You see i sold my laptop in order to have enough money for college expenses. I swear. And its a bit diffuclt to record yourself eating a hat in the library computar lab...

Their macs are so slow!

Anyway, i figure i'll just wait until i visit home...

Can you guys muster up the patience? Can you do that for me? I dying man's last request?

Oh, and i will cut it up in peices. Atleast thats what i think i'll do. As for the deep fried suggestion--hats are fattening enough.

If you guys can agree to another punishment...

I'm not sure if i'd agree. But things are looking pretty bleak right now. I'm a man with nothin' to lose!

I say, bring on the Brotherhood 2.0! Bring It!

I liked Zane...

I voted for FE, but they were all really good in their own way. Kind of like different flavors of ice cream. Strawberry, then chocolate? Or chocolate, then strawberry? The world may never know.

Definitly Vanilla.

Anyway.

Morally speaking, i think Zane was better then Kelsier. They both lived really tough lives. Had unfair childhoods. And endured tragedies.

Kelsier kept smiling, but was still venegful to a fault. He hated nobles, he killed them without a second thought.

And he didn't even have a spike running through him...

Or did he?

Assuming he didn't, i am too afraid to wonder how much of a threat he would have been to the nobles if he infact did have a spike.

That would be bad. Elend would be dead.

Zane on the other hand, still had morals, he still loved--or tried.

He wouldn't kill his father--who he knew was a crooked snake--for the simple reason that he was his father. People shouldn't kill their fathers...

Zane was probably a better person then all of us...

Poor, poor Zane.

*Major spoilers*

K, just wanted to make sure in case people didn't take the thread name seriously...

So, I think my favorite might be FE -- but I'm not sure.  I'll have to read them again.  I loved it--with the crazy plan and the wonderfully romantic Elend/Vin scenes.  *sigh*

WOA--I actually really liked.  For me, it had the most surprising revelations (I saw a lot of them coming in HOA, for which I felt proud of myself).  I for one LOVED Zane, and it surprises me that everyone hated him so much!  He added such intrigue to the story.  Of course I love Elend, but a large part of me was pulling for Zane.  Maybe that means something is wrong with me.  Luckily, I married an Elend kind of guy, so I'm ok ;)

HOA--This was fantastic and very fast paced, which I loved, but Vin and Elend die.  It's so anti-climactic for me.  They were supposed to rebuild the world and start a government and have a family (in my mind).  It's so depressing to see them die -- even if they are in a Heaven-like place.  The fact that we know their spirits live on made it MUCH better, but, still, this made the book/series much more depressing for me.  I need to get over it because I loved the series.  Any ideas on how to get over it? lol

Each book was great in its own way -- but HOA let me down at the end.  So, I'd have to say it's a close one between FE & WOA, with FE maybe barely edging it out...

I too loved Zane. He was by favorite minor character. He might have been my favorite--i just didn't feel like i'd read enough to say so.

Anyway. He's awesome. Chaos doesn't know what he's talking about.

Get over it?

hmm...

I don't think its possible, what you could do is reread it, or lend it out to someone to read it and after they have done so you could discuss it with them. You could begin writing a story...

Ohh, i know, ram your head on the wall hard. to the point where you can't remember your last name or anything beyond the pain you feel.

Than you can relive and re-experience the book in the same sense. (assuming you can still read)

Books / Re: What are you reading, part 3

I am currently re-reading the book "Nerds: Who they are and why we need more of them" by David Anderegg, Ph.D.

It's an interesting book.  :)

Thats an interesting title.

I started reading Country of Origin. Mainly because the author is the professor of my 3000 level class i'm going to be taking next semester. Well, that was initially why i picked it up but thats not whats keeping me reading. Its really good.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Best Mistborn Fight Scene *SPOILERS*
« on: November 03, 2008, 09:51:40 PM »
I agree that Vin and Zane's fights were good examples of what allomancy could do. However, imagine you were a producer or director. Which fight do you think would be the funnest to shoot. or as a viewer, which fight do you think you would most enjoy to watch?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Possible Allomantic Metals *Possible Spoilers*
« on: November 03, 2008, 07:13:15 PM »
I'm sure there could be metals that do that, though would that be under physical metals or some other new category.
Well you know how there are currently groups of two of groups of two.  What if they were groups of two of groups of two of groups of two.  So that there are actually 32 metals.  your branch would go say

=====PHYSICAL=====
--Enhance (Own) Senses --

--Enhances Strength--

++Pushes Metals++

++Pulls Metals++

=====META-PHYSICAL=====
--Dampens (Others) Senses--

--Dampens (Others) Strength--

++Pushes (Destroys) Metals (Not in someone's body)++

++Pulls (Creates) Metals (But not directly into someones body)++

We already see that Chromium or Nicrosil will do the 'destroying' metals, but inside someone.  We also see that when Vin is part of Preservation she can create the metals inside someone (Maybe some other metal will do that.  So there is some plausibility to that.  And we see with Chromium and Nicrosil and Zinc and Brass affect other people.

Thats interesting. More convention magic systems focus more on what the magician could do to another through his/her powers...

I wonder if allomancy would allow someone to temporarily take away someones strength or sight?

The question there becomes, where does it go?

Matter can not be created or destroyed...

We know that from allomancy, the energy comes from the mist--so nothing is being created. But if you were to take away energy--where do you purpose it goes?

I think the best way to explain this is to say that it returns to the mist...

However, i do doubt that there are such metals. in the first place. Just figured I'd humor myself with the notion that such metal could exist.

If the planet is tilted a lot less than Earth, but still tilted a little, it could have seasons that aren't extreme and the day length would not be very different from summer to winter.

Also, the seasons could be due more to the distance from the sun than to the axial tilt: but that would mean that seasons would be more extreme on one pole than on the other. For example, if we assume that the Final Empire's seasons are due mostly to distance from the sun and the planet is not tilted at all (I don't remember; how much does the book talk about day length changing as the seasons progress?), then north and south poles would have summer at the same time instead of at opposite times like on Earth (our Earth is actually slightly closer to the sun during northern hemisphere winter; our seasons come mostly from axial tilt rather than sun distance).

Perhaps that very detail is the glitch that TLR couldn't take into account...

Brandon Sanderson / Best Mistborn Fight Scene *SPOILERS*
« on: November 03, 2008, 03:23:46 AM »
The idea for this thread sprung when a poster claimed (in another thread) that Kels fight vs the inquistor was the ulimate fight.

I disagree. But thats just me. I realize that-despite my vanity. Otherwise i wouldn't have posted this thread.  Anyhow, i picked Mist-wielding Vin. For obvious reasons. The first being that she flattened Kredrik Shaw. KREDRIK SHAW!

Plus she fought one, two, three...Nine Inquistors (i think). So, logically, that would make her fight nine times better, right. Right?

But then again, thats just me.  :P

To be honest, Kel's fight came in third for me--following Atium--induced Elend. Seriously. He was using a sword. And felled thousands of Koloss

And he used a sword.

What'd ya'll think?

HoA was my favorite no doubt. but it didnt have my favorite scence from the trilogy. that forver will be kel fighting the inquisitor.

Hah! That an awesome scene, no denying that, but Mist-wielding Vin vs the inquistors is by far the best in the trilogy.

Followed by Atium-burning Elend in the last stand. Then kelsier vs the inquistor.

Ahhhh, I can see this conversation lasting until the release of whenever the next book comes out.  We may as well just list every metal and alloy there is as well as every possible thing it could do.

Hey miyabe, nice to...read you again?

anyway, that is what we will do, that is what we do here, isn't it?

Hello, Timewasters, duuh.

Pluses things like this, it keeps the brandon sanderson thread unit going...the usual speculation and theoretical lot has ended with the release of HOA and discussing the finish has grown wan...We need this thread.

Video Games / Re: Fable 2 Released
« on: October 31, 2008, 11:23:34 PM »
Blast....my game budget for this month has already been blown. Those are BOTH games that I want.

Time to whine and beg the wife for more cash :D

Brave, brave soul...

You know, what you could do is buy her something without telling her--surprise her--then take her out for dinner. Afterwards tell her she makes you feel young and that you want to walk with her in the mall. Where you will lead her to Gamestop (or any other place) and when you see the Fallout 3 or Fable add that is surely to be up there, first act surprised but mainly be awed, overjoyed, like you fell in love all over again...

Thats a pretty elaborate lie, and i dont do that to my wife--i'm eighteen. i dont even have a girlfriend...perhaps it has something to do with my uncanny ability to fib...hmm?

Wait, i don't understand, does everyone already have their stuff written, or will they start from scratch tomorrow? I began writing mine because i thought it was a competition of how much words you could fit in....

Well, i guess that doesn't make much sense either, does it?
