I mean, seriously, a monopoly movie?

The only way I could ever see something like this being good is if Rodney Dangerfield were to play Rich Uncle Pennybags or something, but that's impossible, since he's ya know, dead.

Dungeons and dragons online has gone free to play as of today, with optional pay services (a store to purchase extra stuff) as well as a subscription based model to get everything.

Me and a few friends plan on trying it out, anyone else got plans to play it?

Video Games / Who wants to help me test a game i've been working on?
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:40:41 PM »
Anyone?

I've been working on a bit of a simple puzzler, based off of Conway's game of life in my spare time. It's a bit bare-bones at the moment, i've just been working on it off and on as I get free time. The basics are it's going to have a sandbox mode and a puzzle mode, sandbox is obviously "do what you want" mode, puzzles have objectives to be completed.

Each cell in the game is also going to be tied to music notes, so generations of life produce music. Note that I know NOTHING about music theory, so my music stuff is trial and error (currently, it sounds terrible. I just put 1 of each note from and octave looped over each column. This sounds horrendous.), though any suggestions are certainly welcome.

The graphics are currently just a "place holder" one day to hopefully be placed with nice looking graphics.

I plan on adding "special" cells that each serve a function, which can aid and hinder in the completion of puzzles (or just fun to jack around with in sandbox mode)

Ideas for special cells thusfar include:

*Poisonous cell - Dies 1 or 2 generations after its creation, regardless of population. Spread its poison to nearby cells.

*Perma-life cell - A cell that lives permanently, regardless of population density.

*Disease cell - A "perma-life" cell that also makes each neighboring cell a poisonous cell

*Sleeper cell - a cell that remains "Dormant" in certain spots for either a set amount of time, or until a cell gets close to it (not sure which yet) at which point it springs to life, regardless of population density

Once again, any suggestions are MORE than welcome. Currently, the game has the grid, regular cells, (crappy) music, and space reserved for a "tool box" and is basically only sandbox mode at the moment.

Note that it requires .net architecture to be installed (it will install it when you install the game if you don't have it. Not a big deal), and I'm gonna go ahead and say it only runs on windows, but I haven't tried on any other environment (it's a normal windows .exe, dunno if it'll work like on WINE In linux or anything)

Currently, there isn't really much to test, and to me so far seems pretty solid, but as I start getting more features in, I'm gonna need some help finding issues, so this is more preemptive than anything.

If in the end it turns out well, I may end up entering it in the inde games festival, though I have no delusions of winning or anything. Like i said, this is just a simple side project to fill time i'm working on.

I may end up stopping if the game proves to be too difficult for your average person to play (which I think *MAY* be a strong possiblity)

Edit: Also, i suppose i should mention, it currently uses the "standard" rules for life (sustain if 2 or 3 cells, birth if 3, else die), though I plan on (sandbox mode, at least) have options to change the birth, death, and sustain rules.

Video Games / Osmos released on steam

I picked up this game yesterday. Neat little physics based game. You're a little...bubble...thingy, and you can absorb those smaller than you. Each level has different objectives, mostly just "get really big" or "absorb this guy". It's fairly simple, but the music adds a lot of ambience to the game. I reccomend it, good for wasting a bit of time, and at the price, totally worth it.

Everything Else / Google forced to reveal identity of blogger

Due to a court ruling, google was required to give up the identity of a blogger who called a model a "skank".

Does this seem like a violation of free speech to anyone else?

Rants and Stuff / So i had a thoroughly terrible day yesterday...
« on: July 09, 2009, 01:04:24 PM »
First off, I just wanna say I'm not trying to garner any sympathy or something, mostly just share how yesterday just kinda toppled out of a control a bit. All in all, I'm gonna be fine, and things will get better and all that, but I just thought I'd share.

First off, I have to call off work, because my car is leaking power steering fluid (ok, that's not too bad, or to big of deal). I take my car up to get checked out. Turns out the problem is the rack and pinion, and fixing it is more expensive than I want to pay for a car that old (nearing 200K miles on it), so now i have to work towards getting a new car.

Next, my dog seems to be lethargic, doesn't want to eat or drink, and we later find out he has soft stool, with blood in it. So we have to take him to the vet. After a $300 vet trip, we find out from the x-rays he didn't eat something, and we're supposed to find out the lab results today, but hopefully shouldn't be too bad. They gave us an antibiotic, and he was seeming much better by the evening.

Lastly, my girlfriend goes to the doctor, because she's been having stomach pains. Turns out he appendix ruptured. So she has to go to surgery that night. She pulled through the surgery ok late last night, so she's gonna be fine, though, so that's good.

Anyways, like I said, just thought i'd share.

Anyone else have any thing particularly nasty they'd like to get off their chests? :)

Windows 7 pricing

the important part:
Quote
From June 26 to July 11, while supplies last Microsoft will offer special preorder pricing.  It will be offering in the U.S. Windows 7 Home Premium for $49.99 and Windows 7 Professional for $99.99, a savings of $150 and $200 respectively (over the full retail versions).  Canada and Japan enjoy similar deals.  Microsoft shows Europeans even more loving with Germany and France receiving Windows 7 Home Premium (€49.99) and Windows 7 Professional (€109.99) preorder prices.  The UK, also part of the EU, receives Windows 7 Home Premium (£49.99) and Windows 7 Professional (£99.99) preorder prices.

Obviously a solid deal, to anyone who's looking to get windows 7. May as well take advantage of it while you can!

Federal Jury: Music Downloader Owes $1.92 Million

Does this seem wrong to any one else? Sure,  stealing = wrong, etc., but the amount of money they had to have put into this litigation, and the amount they'll get out of it (read: none. She can't afford that, she'll file for bankruptcy), and all they're gonna do is garner more hate for themselves.

Everything Else / Amazon sells $100 headphones for $25

Ultimate ears isolating earphones

Just thought I'd let you guys know of what appears to be an incredible deal amazon is having on some expensive headphones that I ran across. I was looking for accessories for my new phone, and ran across these. Note that they are intended for phones like the iPhone that have a 3.5mm jack, so won't fit phones that have 2.5mm jacks, and they have a mic included on the headphones. They will fit anything that uses normal headphone (3.5mm) jacks though, and should function fine.

From the reviews on there, it says they are incredible quality. I'm tempted to snag some.

Again, just thought I'd point it out for anyone interested in some new heaphones! :D
