I wonder if the pre-orders/opening week sales were enough to cover the advance, or if we all need to go buy another copy to make it good.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn Movie-Casting?

Yeah, it's easy for me to assume when I've seen someone in one role that that's what they're always like. Especially when it's often true. I mean, Bruce Willis is always Bruce Willis.

Except in Unbreakable  I saw a somewhat different Bruce Willis in that one.

For me its Samuel L Jackson is always Samuel L Jackson.  I'm glad I haven't seen anybody throw his name in here for any of the characters.

Stephanie Fowers / What age group are Stephanie's books appropriate for?
« on: December 07, 2009, 05:12:16 AM »
I've got a 13 year old niece that has unfortunately been lured to the dark side and now likes Chick Lit.  I figure that having her read something is better than her not reading so I'll feed her habit.  I normally give books for Christmas, but am totally out of my league in this genre.  Are these books suitable for 13 year old tomboys gone girlyish?

Also, do you have any other suggestions for other books/authors to feed her habit with?

Brandon Sanderson / How does Brandon get paid for WoT
« on: December 06, 2009, 07:38:22 PM »
I was just wondering if anybody knew what Brandon's contract arrangement with the Jordan estate is for finishing of the Wheel of Time series.  Is he getting a percentage of the royalties, or is he doing the work for a flat fee?  I'm not looking for numbers, just trying to satisfy my curiosity as to what the pay mechanism is.

7

When I asked him what he though of the WOT series, he said something like, "1 through 6 were great, 7 was pretty good, 8 and 9 he had to push himself to get through, 10 was terrible, 11 was fair." (I may not have the exact book numbers right.). Does this match the general consensus, or is my friend just too picky? I like a long book, but slogging through 3 or 4 1000 page books just to get through them doesn't sound like fun.

It matches a lot of people's opinion, but I don't think you can call it a general consensus.  As stand alone books after 2-4 years of waiting, they aren't that great, but in a straight read through (1-11) they fit in nicely.  The first time I read book 10, I thought it was bad, but that was coming after waiting forever for it to come out.  After having re-read it a couple of times, I can't remember why I didn't like it the first time.  I'll be starting book 10 again about the day after tomorrow so that I can have the series completely re-read by the release date.

3-4 1000 page books is stretching it a little.  I think the longest in that sequence still comes in at under 700 pages (discounting the glossary).

Are the name pronunciations used in this recording the officially recognized version.  If so, I'll stick to my own way of reading them.  Sure they might not be right, but after almost 20 years of thinking them one way it rubs me wrong to hear them pronounced differently.

Brandon Sanderson / What's Brandon up to now?
« on: April 12, 2009, 05:56:27 AM »
Since Brandon got to 100% on the revision to The Gathering Storm, I've noticed that his progress bars have stopped moving.  Now I don't expect him to keep working at the pace that he did for that last couple of weeks, but I did hope to see something change.  Does anybody know what Brandon is up to now?

I've got a few guesses.
1)  Taking a short break to recover from the big push to submit The Gathering Storm.
2)  Doing another quick feedback/edit cycle with said book.
3)  Trying to pick up the pieces of things he had to hack up to make a coherent story for TGS and weave them together for AMOL:2.
4) Working on some other project.
5) Some combination of the previous 4.

Anybody in the know want to comment?

Rants and Stuff / Re: Seven years later...

Globular - worldwide; global.

I was just saying that we take a day to mourn something that relatively is a minuscule event in world history.

As pertaining to why : Imagine someone a hundred times more powerful than you comes and takes what has been yours for over a thousand years.  They then give it to someone else and tell you if you try to take it back they will kill you.  No matter what the people who have that thing do they are right.  So now they are taking more of your stuff and killing your friends and family.  Now you see an opening to maybe try and get the larger power to listen to you. . . . you take the opportunity right?

Are you saying that the creation of the state of Israel caused 9/11?  If so, this has to be one of the biggest stretches I've seen so far.  If not, please clarify the event you're referencing.   That area has been fought over almost continually for as long as we have recorded history.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn as a Video Game
« on: September 13, 2008, 10:48:00 PM »
Once we move up to a 3D model (Which I hope to get to within a year) the main concept will be.

-200 years before TLR's downfall
-People being able to uses all 'races'
-Dynamic class systems (includes all Mistings and Feru and Hazekillers, etc.)
-Ability trees for each 'class' that will make all character types playable
-A way to lean yourself more towards TLR or The Resistance (different missions give points)
-It will be free-roaming
-There will also be instances you can run with a party
-There will be PVP
-the list goes on

We're starting to get a shell for the 2d version of the game. ;D  We may have something in a month - month and a half that is playable.

I hate to be one who rains on parades, but before anybody goes too far with this, there are legal questions to be answered.  Since this is based on works by Brandon Sanderson, you might want to get permission from him in writing before you break his copyright.  Copyright laws come into play even if you aren't planning on selling this or making any profit, since anything you do with it would compete with anything that Brandon may want to explore in the future.  Brandon seems like a nice guy and may grant you permission, but it should be his decision on whether to allow you to play in his world or not.

if Utopia wants to PM me his personal mailing info Ill send him a copy of the mistborn series seeing how I have two of each. Im keeping Elantris though because I only have one.
Egads. Noooonooonooo! Feedest thou NOT the troll that prowleth these boards. I beseech thee most adamantly, dear GreenMonsta. For then wilt we be never rid of his purile polls and brazen begging or his exuberantly misplaced sense of entitlement. Please, I beg thee by all that is holy (including the Green Monster at Fenway) to reconsider thy plan!

And, forsoothe, if thou hast an affliction known as "Multiple Personalties," make all haste to check thyself in at the nearest ER.

That's a brilliant plan, GreenMonsta.  I wish I had thought of it first, really, what better way is there get his actual address so I could go to his house and mock him in person.   Ummm...I've got some extra books too, so go ahead and send me your address and I'll get right on it.

You are the biggest troll around. At least three other forum members believe you should be banned.

I don't know, I mean he single-handedly forced me to stop being a lurker and start posting.  That's gotta be worth something.  Now if I only had something to contribute to the more worthwhile threads...

Video Games / Re: Should Sanderson create a MMORPG of Mistborn?
« on: September 08, 2008, 07:27:19 AM »
That may be, but none of those threads contain input from myself.

This thread doesn't have input from yourself either.  It just has you asking two questions that have already been asked and in one case answered.  (Its been stated that Brandon doesn't like MMORPGs, so it can be assumed that he won't be making one any time soon.)

This board discourages starting new threads about a specific topic if said topic is already covered in another thread.
