Brandon Sanderson / Re: TGS chapter 2 now online at tor.com
« on: September 27, 2009, 11:32:53 PM »
I thought it was another great chapter by Sanderson. Egwene's character development and maturation that began way back in The Shadow Rising with her apprenticeship to the Aiel was completed.  Even more interesting was the way this chapter foreshadowed how Elaida's overthrow, the Black Ajah Hunters and the Seanchan attack would come together. Really makes me excited for what is to come.

For people who don't like to listen to audiobooks, I know where a transcription of the chapter is posted. I don't know whether it would be kosher with the rules to post that here so just PM me if you want a link to it.

Personally, I think that tCSoWHiCtRWaSaHP is a much better title than either tGS, ToM, or AMoL.

So... Towers....

we've got the Black and White Towers, the topless towers of Cairhein, the tower of Ghenjei, and the seven towers of Malkier.

anyone thinking it's Malkier?

I also read that some people are thinking that its about the Seanchan, apparently they have towers too, thirteen of them actually.  As far as Malkier, I think there's hints of Lan's kingdom being reborn in the recently released prologue.

Really? I read the prologue and didn't notice that.

I see what you are saying, and to a degree I can agree. However the "huge" events that have transpired should have larger effects on the characters. It's the way they have changed that bothers me. The psychology. Other than a throw-away line here and there, Rand has relatively few psychological scars from Dumai's Wells. Mat rarely thinks about the queen he got killed. Perrin's thoughts can be best summed up as "grr." In fact, lately all the characters seem to be centered around the Eddings philosophy of "one trait makes a character." See where I'm coming from? The emotional complexity that made these character's great in the beginning, to me, has been erased.

I just completely disagree.

Rand has few psychological scars from Dumai Wells, really? He scoured the entire battlefield and memorized the face and name of every dead maiden. He thinks and obsesses over them and all the other women who have died in his service all the time. And lets not forget the mental scars from being locked in a box and beaten, it's the root cause for his ever deepening paranoia.

Perrin is also a man obsessed, although in this case the obsession is with his wife, an obsession that is leading him down a brutal path. One only has to look at his treatment of the Shaido prisoner he tortured to see how much he's changed and how strong the inner conflict is between the good man underneath, his obsession and the more primal violent instincts that lay close to the surface in him.

Mat has matured from the boy he was in the beginning of the series, but he's still a man who lives in the moment, it would be way out of character for him to brood over Tylin's death.

- Thom finally let Mat read his letter from Moiraine and HOLY CRAP!!! She's alive!! I guess she's prisoner (?) to the Finn's and only Thom, Mat, and one other person (I think it might be Noal) can save her but only if they themselves go. Otherwise she will die. This had my heart racing. I'd LOVE to have Moiraine back in the story. I've wanted to see her reaction to certain events for a long time since she "died." I want to see her meet Cadsuane. I want to see her reaction the the cleansing of saidin. What she thinks of Egwene as Amyrlin seat. Potential Thom/Moiraine romance?? So many things!!! I'd love to see other Aes Sedai's reactions to her being alive, as she is now legendary among Aes Sedai for killing TWO Forsaken herself. This is one plot thread I will eagerly be awaiting.

Actually Moraine and Cadsuane have already met and it wasn't a pleasant meeting. Moraine suspects that Cadsuane may be a darkfriend. This all happened in the prequel novel A New Spring.

Now, since we've read Cadsaune's point of view we know she isn't a darkfriend, but Moraine doesn't. I don't think she'll like how close she's gotten to Rand.

Exactly, that doesn't mean I don't like her as a character, though.  She was given a fascinating personality.

Yukomo, what do you mean that's not how she acts?  Does she ever explain to anyone the reasons for her counsel?  Does she share her ideas and goals with other Aes Sedai (or even Rand) as equals do?  Most certainly not.  If you want her help, you must do it her way, and you must trust her.

She explains herself to Verin and Sorilea.

Cadsuane is quite interesting.  She only knows how to do things via the "I am Aes Sedai and that should be enough for you" attitude towards people.

That's not how she acts, she treats people as they are. The rest of the Aes Sedai are obsessed with tradition, status, strength in the power, etc but she will listen to a good idea even if it comes from the lowest sister. She doesn't tolerate the conniving political BS that all the Aes Sedai are obsessed with, she's blunt and doesn't dance around the truth like other Aes Sedai.

I liked Path of Daggers a lot, I think Rand's climactic scene is awesome.

Ok, before you continue reading know that I AM glad that EUOL is getting more attention and becoming a more popular author, BUT:

2. The lack of the WoT threads actually being theory threads.  This new group is a totally different species of forum goers.  They just talk about what HAS happened and other things that relate to WoT (i.e. games) and none of it is argumentative debate.

Us WoT people have debated theory on what will happen in the next book since Knife of Dreams was released in '05. Even with a series of Biblical scope like WoT that's enough time to debate every plot thread a dozen times. We're all debated out. Once the prologue gets released online as it always does you'll see an explosion of theory threads.

The problem I might have with it is the issue of passivity.  Rigney's titles fallow a pattern that describes the beginning, plateau, climax and if it had ended with AMOL falling off point.  The book titles help you know where you are in the concise novel The Wheel of TimeA Gathering Storm has less punch than Knife of Dreams where it should have had more and lead seamlessly into Tarmon Gaiden, a good title.

I disagree completely. The Gathering Storm, imo,  is meant to signify the upcoming battle, and i think it sets the tone for the final 3 books better than The Knife of Dreams ever did. The Knife of Dreams is a neat title, but it is only mentioned in the little block of text before the start of the novel. It actually doesn't really do anything. Once again, remember that Nyneave has been talking about this approaching storm for several novels in between incessant braid-pulling. This is a fitting title that is not passive in the least - it's the foreboding that accompanies the doom you know is coming, and is precisely where the series is at now. It implies the final lead-in to the storm that is Tarmon Gai'Don. I think you are worrying about the wrong title. It is the second one that needs to be the perfect transition.

A Knife of Dreams represents a lot of different things though. It represents the Aiel belief that life is but a dream that one must wake from. It represents the Ayamar who are also descended from the original Aiel and took the belief  to the extreme committing mass suicide. It represents the fog of war that Mat uses to confuse the Seanchan. And it represents the fraying of reality as time wavers and the shades of the ghosts become ever more present as the Dark One comes closer and closer to breaking free.

I would have chosen the titles for these books from the lines of the Karaethon Cycle.

These would be great titles for the three books that are coming.

Dread Fires Born Again.
The Dark Hunt Rides / or Rent in Blood and Fire (from an Elaida foretelling)
The Pain of Salvation.

If it has to do with storms, "Storm clouds gather" and "Rider of the Storm" is in the prophecies. I like that last one, makes me think of the Doors.

26
Your right it is bland and over used, even in an episode of Angel the phrase was used. I'm just saying it could be worse, at least the title's only crime is being a bit boring. At least it's not painful *cough* Attack of the Clones *cough*
It doesn't make business sense either, at least Lucas could trademark "Attack of the Clones", Tor can't trademark "The Gathering Storm", it's a common phrase that has been used as the title of numerous works before.

27
None of this bothers me except for the titles, they're just so generic.

I don't understand why they didn't use some of the more descriptive lines of the Karaetheon Cycle like so many of the other books.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WOT/Moraine's Letter to Thom
« on: August 22, 2008, 06:14:58 AM »

Ok so now that im done with that ramble. . .  My friend just recently started reading the WOT and he is currently reading Lord of Chaos. He finds it amusing to ask me question about things that he doesnt know yet because he knows i wont ruin it for him. The funny thing is he brought up a question that ive been thinking about for ever. What did Moraine's letter to Thom say? Now dont call me out im a little rusty on the facts but im pretty sure Moraine told Thom that she loved him. Im gonna research it tonight but i want to hear what every one has to say. Its not hard to realize that this is a MB/WARBREAKER forum so lets talk about one of the  biggest books of our time.

Uh, Mat reads the letter in a Knife of Dreams doesn't he?

EDIT: Yes page 260 of KOD.

It starts

" My Dearest Thom,
There are many words I would like to write to you, words from my heart, but I have put this off because I knew that I must, and now there is little time."

1. Two books won't be two self containing stories. That is not possible. RJ said it himself.
2. Plus how would they name it? A memory of light A, A memory of ligt B? or A memory of Light and Tarmon Gaidon?
Whatever it will be it's not something that RJ choice and that is way important.
3. Going against the author wishes while it could be publised as one book. Very disrespectfull.

They can split it into part 1 and part 2 like Tad William's did with To Green Angel Tower, which was a great book. I'd like to see them use the cool reverse cover art thing they did too.
