Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoT Myrddraal questions
« on: May 09, 2011, 02:01:44 PM »
Ah, I knew I'd seen it resolved somewhere.  That's what I remember, as well.  Thanks, Morsker!

Pity the theory itself died, though.  It was pretty clever.

I seriously doubt Brandon or Peter have time to answer this question.

I do suggest, though, that you look elsewhere for the answers.  I know that the first theory (e.g. if Myrddraal would have been channeling humans) has been asked before.  I vaguely remember that the answer was "No," but seriously, don't take my word for it.

As for the second part, that's speculation.  I can't help but suspect that by their very nature, Myrddraal are evil in the same way the Dark One is.

Hi everyone, first time posting here.

This isn't a typo as much as an unfortunate coincidence of my language and I'm pretty sure Brandon Sanderson doesn't know about it. "Kolo" [Elantris] or "Koloss" [Mistborn] translates to... well, the rear aspect in Cypriot, which is a dialect of the Greek language. The word doesn't exist in Greek, only in Cypriot.

It was kind of jarring to come across this not once but multiple times across 4 books. Still it never failed to make me smile every time I read it! ;D

There is no short combination of syllables which have not sounded like a dirty word in at least one language, somewhere.  Humans are just too creative to have passed any up.

Dan Wells / Re: Review of Mr Monster
« on: April 22, 2011, 02:30:56 PM »
My review of the whole blasted series can be summed up like this:

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!  Make it stop.

Wow these are good books!

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!  Make it stop.

This is some seriously good writing.

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!  Make it stop.

OK, amazing books.  I need a bath now.  And my mommy.

Edit (IDWTKY spoilers):

In retrospect, that last line is a bit tasteless, considering the end of the third book.  Still absolutely true, though.

Dan Wells / Re: Best line from Mr. Monster [spoilers]

Just read your book, Dan.  That was really amazing work you did.  Now I feel like going back and rereading the first one.

Anyways, there were a lot of really good lines in the book, so I figured I'd give other fans a chance to talk about which was their favorite.

My absolute favorite is this:
Quote
"I beat you," I said. "You've lost."
"And for the..." he coughed, raspy and painful, his voice charred and black. "For the first time in... ten thousand year..." he coughed again. "I feel like I've won."

It took me a second to realize what the demon was talking about here.  At first I wondered if the demon had managed to accomplish some hidden goal.   When it finally hit me, I couldn't stop laughing for about ten minutes.  I can't imagine how bitter it must have to for him to place himself above humanity, to consider himself superior, and yet the more power he gained, the weaker and more pathetic he'd feel, because that's how the people he used his power on would feel around him.  Absolutely freaking beautiful.

Yeah, that particular line stuck out for me, too.  He gave me the heebie jeebies, but he was also pathetic, in his way.

I know this is rather late, but I wanted to mention that Dan Wells knew this bit was an issue.  How many of you have read "I don't want to kill you"?

BTW, I would say that Dan agrees with the majority opinion I've been seeing in this thread.

Yes, I need an outlet after reading the IANASK series.  Why do you ask?

Edit:  I also found the demon in Mr. Monster to be much more terrifying than Mr. Crowley in IANASK.  Probably because in some ways, he hit so much closer to home with John.  It's my theory that Dan was doing this deliberately, but that's another thread.

I don't know which I find more disturbing:  Dan's books, or this thread.

OK, ccstat, that is officially cool.  I especially like the bit where you parallel the forgotten king with the potential future king.  Well done.  The best types of chiasmus are the ones where the form complements the content.

In particular, the "Genuine Imitation" part always gets a chuckle from me. I do wonder occasionally what Schlock would think of the original, non-imitation type...

It does make you wonder what the difference is between genuine imitation and imitation imitation.

Does think about it!!!!!!!!!  That way lies madness!!!!!!!!!!!!  I should know.

(Yes, I'm a Pratchett fan.  How did you guess?)

However, it does seem reasonable to think that the Stormlight is to Honor as the mists were to Preservation.

Ok, that just gave me a SAT flashback.

Well, it's nice to think that my study for those tests eventually turned out to be useful for *something*.

i'm not sure if anyone saw this or not, some one probably did, but that moment when Vin takes in the mists it seems suspiciously like Stormlight

Nice catch with Vin and the Stormlight!

I'm pretty sure the Shard's don't have to be dead for their magic to be active.  Endowment seems to be alive and well, for instance, and both Ruin and Preservation were technically alive while Hemalurgy, Allomancy and Feruchemy were being used.  As far as I know, Sazed is alive and well, holding both Ruin and Preservation, in "An Alloy of Law."

However, it does seem reasonable to think that the Stormlight is to Honor as the mists were to Preservation.

I have two theories about the Shard's being able to see the future:

They are just so smart from holding the power, it's as easy for them to see the future as it is for us to predict where a baseball is going or that a certain relationship is going to fall apart.  It's not certain, exactly, but with a bit of practice and experience, most of us can get pretty good at those two things.  It only becomes really difficult when somebody just as smart as us gets involved.

The other idea is that they actually see through time somehow, the same way we can see through space.

I actually favor the second idea more.  But we'll see.

I have to second what others have said.  Brandon is health-conscious, and does use the gym regularly!  Smart guy.

Pity I only know Sword of Truth by reputation.  On the other hand, I have read Atlas Shrugged, so yeah, I follow.

He must have. I think it's part of the process of becoming a Returned. You die, you see the Iridescent Wave, you have a vision of the future (although you may be unable to recognize it as such), and in some rare cases, you decide to come back and try to fix things.

But the tidbit about Endowment likely being able to see the future is interesting. Unless there is some leftover of power from before the shattering of Adonalsium, and it's that power that's showing visions of the future, he must be a pretty interesting Shard.

Actually, over on 17th Shard, being able to see the future is the prime candidate for a power all shards hold.  It seems to hold across an enormous variety of Shards, and it seems likely that Shard's can interfere with each others visions, just like atium users can.

Atium is, in fact, a prime piece of evidence for this (allowing humans to see the future, even if just a little bit), as is Preservation's ability to create the scarily accurate prophecies.  The Almighty in WoK also says he can see the future (but it is cracked, like a mirror, the further you go) and the Cultivation was better at it than he was.  And then there's the odd tidbit in Elantris where Wyrn seems to know the future.    Endowment seeing the future seems almost mundane once you put it into the proper line-up. So it's not all that unique, really.

Edit:  Back on topic, I wonder what the heck Vasher saw before he died.  Also, returned having awareness?  It seems to me that there is more to awakening that we realize...
