Everything Else / Obama wants to halve budget deficit
« on: February 22, 2009, 01:19:34 AM »
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090221/ap_on_go_pr_wh/obama_budget

As the article says, "a lofty goal". One I think is impossible. However, I am all for scaling government down. He says he wants to scale back spending and improve government efficiency by eliminating programs that don't work.

What do you guys think? Is it probable? Is it even possible? Are the ways he says he will do it effective or beneficial means?

Reading Excuses / 2-16-09 Reaves, Crystalheart Chs 9-10
« on: February 16, 2009, 03:05:42 PM »
Next installment is here. I think both of these chapters are good. As I mentioned in the email, do you think I should give another desert scene before they make it to Londalis? I promise, you will see sand panthers either way :D
As always, thanks for reading and for giving me your thoughts. You guys are great!

Howard Tayler / Favorite Character?
« on: February 15, 2009, 07:36:51 PM »
Alright, so who is your favorite character? If I've forgotten anyone let me know :D
Mine is definitely Ennesby. He's not quite as cool as he used to be when he was making 4 puns a strip, but hey. He is still very funny at times, and I love his expressions.

Howard Tayler / What's So Great About Schlock Mercenary?
« on: February 09, 2009, 05:36:55 PM »
So. Why should I read your comics? I've never really been big on comics or cartoons, unless you count Calvin and Hobbes in fifth grade  :P Why should I start now? What's your pull?

Basically, what's so great about Schlock Mercenary?

Other people besides Howard feel free to chime in too  :P  Just tell me why I should be interested  :D

Reading Excuses / 2-09-09 Reaves, Crystalheart Chapter Eight
« on: February 09, 2009, 05:22:52 PM »
Wow, its Bonza Bottler day! (sp?) I didn't realize that until I wrote the date on the emails I sent out. Hurray!

Finally, a good, honest-to-God fight scene. Its about time, right? Hopefully this battle works better than the one in chapter 2, with the silver-haired dude.

Anyway, I really like this chapter. However, I think I'm a bit too close to it to be able to judge it objectively. What did you think? As always, thanks for reading!

Reading Excuses / 2-2-09 Reaves: Crystalheart, chapter seven
« on: February 03, 2009, 01:15:48 AM »
Short chapter. I considered sending eight along as well, but it is twice as long as seven and would have pushed the word count over six thousand. So be thankful  :D Plus, a lot happens in it and I would have liked another week to change a few things.

So far there is nothing I can really specifically point to that makes me think this chapter is a little weak, but it still feels that way to me. The first half I kinda meander along and I'm not sure if I can keep the reader interested. Thoughts?

Also, did it seem a bit ridiculous that Tristan was able to fool the guards? It seems a bit cliche or childish to me, but I wasn't sure.

Thanks for taking a look! Be honest!

Reading Excuses / 1-26-09 Reaves: Crystalheart chapter Six
« on: January 26, 2009, 02:45:46 PM »
Once again thanks for commenting! Tear it to shreds! My thoughts below:

I do like this chapter. I think it turned out fairly well; at least, much better than the fiasco that was chapter 5 :)

Unfortunately, we've already got some continuity issues; I say something like it was the peak of the dry season, though it was raining heavily in chapter 3. After jwdenzel suggested I do some research (imagine: research!) I found out that although extremely heavy rains can occur in the desert, they are rare. So ignore that little inconsistency; it will be fixed later.

I like Ilis' scene in this chapter. This is the last we see of her for a bit, but don't worry; she'll be back.

Question: did that little paragraph blurb about the boy named Marlin stand out enough that you will remember the name? He comes back later and actually turns into a semi-major character. All I really need right now though is that you recognize the name and know that he is about 10 years old.

Also, for those of you who said that you didn't like the little blurb in italics at the top of each chapter, rest assured; this is the last. Back when I was writing this, I realized that the blurbs weren't the important part; I had more productive things to do with my time.

Reading Excuses / 1 - 19 - 09 Reaves, Crystalheart: Ch. 5
« on: January 19, 2009, 04:51:56 PM »
As always, thanks for taking the time to look this over! I know this writing group has really helped me a lot!

I mentioned in the email I'm thinking of shortening the "Hallastan" section. It's not what the book is about and to me, its really not all that interesting. (cue instant death.)

Also specifically for this chapter, what do you guys think about the Ilis/Aermyst scene at the end? Did Aermyst seem too arrogant?  :P He's supposed to be arrogant, but not a jerk  :D

Thoughts?

Reading Excuses / 1/12/09 Crystalheart: Chapter Four
« on: January 12, 2009, 11:40:50 PM »
Wow, we are truly drowning in submissions this week. Anyway, if you do make your way to this topic I want to thank you for once again giving me your thoughts and impressions! Specifically, I have questions about pacing. Too fast? (not likely.) Too slow?
Also, what about Ilis? Just tell me your general ideas about her, her characterization, etc.

Reading Excuses / Crystalheart, Chapter 2
« on: December 16, 2008, 01:37:54 AM »
Yay! Round 2!

I want to ask is this too soon for a fight of this caliber? Am I making promises to the reader that this story is all action and no depth?

Also, I tried some experimentation with my sentence structure. I am concerned with one sentence in particular: it's basically...well, its got lots of commas. What I want to know is, did you notice it? If you did, did it jar you out of the story? Did it work?

Thanks for reading!

                                                                                                                                                                                     edited for clarity

Reading Excuses / Crystalheart Ch. 1
« on: December 01, 2008, 03:26:27 AM »
First of all, thanks to everyone who read my manuscript. I really appreciate everyone who's made it this far!

Second of all, I know I may be jumping the gun a bit but I'm not going to have enough time to get this all together in the morning and, hey, no one checks TWG this late anyways, do they?  :P

Thanks again for reading. Even if you don't feel like you have anything to add, please just give me your general impressions. What struck a chord? What didn't make sense? What worked? What didn't?

Writing Group / Point-of-View Breaks
« on: December 01, 2008, 12:58:30 AM »
Point-of-view breaks. I know I am using the wrong phrase here. What I basically mean here is when in reading a book the author skips two lines and starts a new paragraph, almost always fast-forwarding in time to the next event. When you are writing using the "official" format, it looks like this:

#             #                #               #               #              #              #                 #                #               #               #             #              #             #

How often do you think this technique should be used? Often I find myself making a break and then completely switching characters to talk about something different. Should I be writing a whole new chapter then? Is this a good technique? Can it be used too much?

I find myself using these breaks several times in a chapter, usually around three times. Opinions?

Brandon Sanderson / Told you so....*spoilers*
« on: October 19, 2008, 11:56:15 PM »
Just thought we needed a thread for those who have read the book to gloat over their correct or not so correct theories. I have not even finished it yet but realized we needed something like this, if only to justify the months we've spent theorizing!! Let the one-upmanship begin!!

Also, as I said I am not even done yet but when I read Spook's third? chapter I almost laughed.
yeah, i knew it.  kelsier lives.

Also if the epigraphs do turn out to be written by Sazed I called that too. I'm not sure where I said it but I'll find it eventually. And from where I'm standing page 100? that possibility is looking greater and greater... :D :) :D

Movies and TV / Anime
« on: October 01, 2008, 12:06:39 AM »
So I have pretty much never watched an anime in my life. The closest I have ever gotten to reading an anime is when my little brother throws one of his Batman comics at me...

I am wondering what shows are good. There seem to be so many...

I don't really know if anyone here actually watches anime, although I believe Ookla's work has to do with manga in print. However, if anyone has any suggestions of shows I might like please chime in!

(also if someone could coach me on the difference in anime and manga)  :D
