Brandon Sanderson / Re: New Q&A! (But Warbreaker only)
« on: January 21, 2010, 12:24:02 AM »
It makes me wonder what other worlds have Splinters, and what the limit is on making them. Elantrians seem awfully powerful, and might have Splinters. Maybe Mistborn do, at least the really powerful ones like Elend. Maybe the ten immortal Heralds in Stormlight Archive. I don't feel like Mistings and normal Awakeners have this level of power though.

Agreed - that's what I was thinking.  I believe that if Returned have Splinters, Elantrians probably do too.
Heralds...I think it's too early to say.  They could be Splinters or they could be something else entirely (like Lord Ruler).

I must say, I'm enthused about learning more about the Heralds!

I haven't read the sample that will be included in the paperback of Warbreaker so I don't know anything else really.

Wow...just wow...

1. Knew about the hotel job (incidentally, I do something along the same lines - it makes you either go crazy or become a font of creativity and gives you a lot of time to study unusual "characters" in detail).

2. The 20 seats and a massive number of sit-ins - wow.  I've only seen this kind of thing once (it takes a massive reputation within your chosen field to get that kind of response).  I had an amazing professor once (also taught only 300 level courses) who had 400 seat lecture halls booked and half a dozen TAs (more a question of crowd control than anything) because of this kind of thing.
If he gets a bigger classroom, they will come!

Incidentally, I wonder how much of a madhouse it becomes at signings and convention panels he takes part in now.

They are called the Heralds. Beyond that, I don't know, but I doubt they each had/have a shard. That's a lot of shards.

Any information is more than I had!  Thank you!

At least I know what to call them now when I wildly speculate.

You needed to spend more money on duplicate books to save money on shipping? How does that work? :)

Generally they'll ship for free or reduced rates if you purchase enough from some online shops - I used to shop at one that would ship for free if I filled the shipping box fully and got the slowest shipping service they offered.

People may be interested to read this blog post from 2004: http://brandonsanderson.com/blog/29/Tor-Proposal-Part-Four

As you can see, the series name has changed. There are other differences: the immortal character has been put off for a later book, and the massive war spoken of hasn't started yet (there's a different war in the new book one). The overall plot of the series has not changed, but what happens in the first book is dramatically different.

A curiosity: In the first version of Way of Kings, Brandon had actually put the seafaring nation of Svorden in the book. That was before Elantris got picked up.

I'd been meaning to ask about the conservation from Oathshards to SLA.

I'm still curious (but I doubt I'll get an answer soon) if those 10 "angelic beings who have been driven insane" are the actual shards (what IS a shard without a host?!), dedicated hosts (like HoA) or are they something else entirely with something akin to immortality (like Elantrians or Returned)?

If the 10 are actual shards/hosts then this would explain what had previously been mentioned about a large number (30 I think it was?) of magic systems.

Thank you for EVERYTHING!

If they try, I'll just have to send my hubby to Utah to gain a foothold.  I'm kind of tethered here in the frozen north.

guessingo:  I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned that Brandon anticipates his progress meters for the WoT novels (since they're pretty long novels) may get to 150% or so before he considers the writing "done" - then, because they're WoT novels (and not technically his universe but one he's permitted to use), they probably require a longer process prior to publication.

Square Enix actually has offices in LA in addition to Tokyo.  I've dealt with some of the CS staff - very friendly, good senses of humour!

That said, by no means is the following limited to BYU folk - otherwise I'd have been chased off years ago.

I know plenty of us are fanatical enough to create digital copies if the work isn't available for purchase (I've avoided this to date - all of mine are kosher) or quote indices (guilty on the latter - makes it easy to flip through his entire works to date which I keep within arm's reach) for quick reference but I know all of us are respectful enough to keep them on our own PCs and limit them to personal use.

Now it's my turn to be tortured because
1. I haven't had a chance to read the unpublished works
2. I have to wait how many years to read all of these in completeness?

I like the inclusion of Firefly vets - Summer Glau is absolutely the only one I can picture as Vin.  Adam Baldwin...you realize that Firefly fans will buy tickets just to see them on screen together and pretend that it's a new (very strange) season of Firefly?

Also, isn't Hayden just a bit too old?  Spook pretty much undergoes puberty in the books.

Dude...I don't think I could imagine Topher at a table of his buddies without there being illegal substances involved.  Somehow I think that this would HURT Vin's interpretation of his bookclub.

Who knows if he'll come up with more plot arcs and worlds before he's done with the ones he has planned?  I'm not calling a number...far too early.  When he says it's done, it's done...and maybe not even then (he might change his mind).

EDIT:  You should know that I appreciate the HHG reference though!

I'm not even an option for winning this (I, in no way, know or have ever met Brandon - although I want to abduct him away to the frozen north and am seeding that thought in minds with accompanying novels in hands of people who can make plane tickets happen).

I'm simply enjoying the show.  Also, wishing that I lived some place where I could hang out with you guys.
