Brandon Sanderson / Re: Roots of the Cosmere

You're pretty close, but the facts aren't quite right. Hoid appears in the Well of Ascension as an unnamed Terrisman, and  he is named once more in Hero of Ages by Cett, but this is the encounter where Vin's "instincts" tell her not to see him so she doesn't.

Hoid is also the beggar that Sarene hires to deliver goods to Elantris in Elantris.

If I remember right, none of the metals are addictive until you hit savant status, when they all become so. It doesn't make a lot of sense for a coinshot to get the desire to push on things all the time, but if they had Inquisitor-like Pushing ability they would probably get hooked on the added perception.

As for Kelsier getting metals to escape, one of the reasons the Pits of Hathsin are where they are is because of all the metal in the ground. On top of that, there is a lot of atium going around the place. All it would take is for Kelsier to Snap, use a bit of trace iron to pull a bead of atium to himself, and things get crazy.

Quote from: The Final Empire, hardcover pg 455
He stepped over to the rift and forced himself ti climb down inside of it. Then he burned tin. immediately, he heard a cracking sound from below. [...] He could already see his first crystalline atium-hole--or what was left of it. The long, silvery crystals were fractured and broken.

A few paragraphs below that it shows how Kelsier starts to burn iron to find the rest of the crystals. If he was burning steel beforehand, he would have no need to burn iron, nor would he remark on how the lines suddenly appeared.

Unless there's another secret.

Perhaps the two different types of lashing are actually two magic systems. If that's the case, I expect there is a lot more to be learned about both of them, even if Szeth appears to know about as much as is possible in the current era.

It's also questions like this that keep the board thinking. A lot of times with the bigger questions people have about the books Brandon has intentionally not given us all the info, but these kinds of discussions keep us going through the books looking for details we may have overlooked. I, for one, haven't had this much fun since the Mistborn Trilogy.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Medical Hemalurgy
« on: October 03, 2010, 06:59:50 AM »
Since Hemalurgy requires infusing the spike with at least part of the dying person's spirit, I would imagine some semblance of life would be required in the donor for the spike to absorb. If the spike was a physical link, people on life support would be fine, but since it tears apart their spirit, I'm not sure if even a brain dead donor would work.

Just going to point out here that it's pretty easy for anyone with access to soulcasters to get oil, as it's one of the ten essences. Doesn't help much with the flaming arrows idea, but it could be how the Parshendi or other force burn the bridges. Just soulcast the top half of it into oil and set it ablaze.

If I remember right, the language of the Final Empire has a lot of vowels. I'll have to check my notes and stuff.

During Lightsong's flashback near the end of Warbreaker, he says a voice offered him the choice to Return. I'd take this as decent evidence that Endowment was alive at least up until shortly before the book starts.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Steel Inquisitor - Number of Spikes
« on: April 07, 2010, 05:32:26 PM »
Plus, most Inquisitors were Mistings beforehand, if not full Mistborn. They don't need spikes in their native powers. Spikes would probably be granted for the physical powers and bronze, but the others are only of marginal usefulness if you already have the power. I would guess that Atium burning Inquisitors were spiked Mistborn.

Brandon Sanderson / Snapping, the Shaod, and Returning.
« on: February 14, 2010, 04:31:28 AM »
So I've been rereading Brandon's books over the past little while, snooping for theory evidence, and I noticed some rather large parallels between Snapping, the Shaod, and Returning. Essentially, all three are extraordinary events that turn people into magic users.

But there are some major differences, for example Snapping only occurs under extreme duress, while the Shaod occurs most often while asleep. Since I'd been attending the Symposium Brandon's been frequenting the past few days, I decided I'd just ask him, and the answer I got was along the lines of, "Is the Shaod really random?"

I've got a few theories and such regarding this, but I figured I'd put the info on the table before I left.

We need the powers of the Hero of Ages!

Someone find Chaos to save us from this . . . Chaos.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: So, Hoid was there when what happened?
« on: December 20, 2009, 08:06:18 AM »
"Oops, I broke God."

It has always seemed to me that Hoid is seeking Shard objects. The Lerasium in Well of Ascension, or maybe the Well itself, perhaps the Pool of Elantris.

It would help if we knew where Endowment's body and pool were located. (If anywhere.)

Is this doubled doubled, or two-Mistborn power? Like if I burn Lerasium twice, will I have four times or just three times the power?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Most people say Kelsier wrong
« on: December 15, 2009, 07:46:35 AM »
Brandon actually mentioned this when I was at the Hero of Ages signing. But then he just made note how all the names were based off of French, and didn't actually say any way was right or wrong.  (I wonder how well the names will translate into the in-book Language. It's based off of Tagalog, if I remember right, which isn't very French . . .)
