Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hate Mail????

Seriously though... You have to know when to let the story die (or to use a Stargate-ism: ascend to a higher plane of existence, as good books surely do), and the way to do that is not by doing a 19 years later thing... or by telling us rather pointlessly that the headmaster was gay. So what? Pointless, useless, mucky muck muck muck.

That being said, I've always had fundamental issues with all of her writing, but alas, I digress, as this thread has become a thing of tangents and ADD.

Whoever wrote that email was probably one of those creepy fanboy people who's latest obsession recently died out (probably some obscure Japanese cartoon) and he's shifted his insane need to totally dote on something to Brandon's work.

Rand is downright the best, even if just for the fact that he has the hundreds of years of experience from Kinslayer to draw from. On top of that though, he was trained by the best of the Warders and has serious power bumps from being Bonded (which he would still smash every one even if he didn't), and I bet that from all of the crap that he's taken from life, all the accumulated wounds and tortures and various pains, he could walk out there, take any hit they could hope to deal to him, and he would STILL turn around and smite them where they stood in all of their insolence.

(really wanted to use the word insolence in a post ^^)

He doesn't use the power to sword-fight, not in a very long time, or unless he's fighting another channeler. Heck, we saw him bash the 6 or w/e best swordsmen in Caemlyn that one time, among many other incredibly awesome feats of uber awesomeness.

It'd just be mean of Rand to use Callandor or that fire blade thing he does sometimes, that and it would obliterate any resistance to his Dragony wonderfulness... He is by far the best swordsman out of the list and any mentioned thusfar.

Honestly, Mace Windu is cool, but Rand could whip him in a fight sooooo easily. Jedi train to use the force along with lightsabers (which have significantly different tactical implications that swords), and would get his colon stomped so fast in a no-powers fight against Rand.

I really think that Lan ought to be on the list if Aragorn is though, because the King of Malkier could totally slam him into the ground, probably without breaking a sweat. I mean seriously, Lan v. Aragorn, no contest, at all.

I have to agree with pretty much everything said here so far. Elantris was a good story, and a good primer for Brandon to break onto the scene, but it's just fine left how it is. It wraps everything up that it needs to and doesn't give you too much extraneous information, unlike some authors I've read who just keep dragging things out.

My first experience with Elantris (like many around here now) came about as a result of Brandon becoming RJs successor, and trying to make sure he could do the job. We wanted to make sure he wouldn't do like Tolkien and turn the potential for a wonderful book into an agonizing steep in the depths of hedes, or like Card, who is an admittedly wonderful author, but can't really finish a book right... Brandon doesn't exhibit either problem in the least. He's sharp, witty and is the Master of the Twist, as Elantris proved and Mistborn keeps verifying.

As readers, we have a right to critique, but keep in mind that writing is an art, and authors have to express themselves as they see fit, especially when they have earned the right time and time again as Brandon now has.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Ruin and Preservation
« on: April 04, 2008, 09:48:32 AM »
I don't know how explored the concept is, but wasn't it mentioned that the koloss are a creation of ruin? What if when you take the power from the Well, whatever is done has to have a counteraction as well, in order to keep ruin and preservation in check (in that case, giving us the kandra).  If that's the case, maybe when he created Allomancy, Hemalurgy came into existence as well. I've been tossing the idea around in my head for a bit and it seems to make sense.

Feel free to rip it to shreds, though. Nothing I like more than to be proven wrong. ^^

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Holy crap... Just finished MB2
« on: March 14, 2008, 07:20:37 PM »
I finished it five minutes ago... My mind is yet still blown.

I think anyone who's read RJ's WoT will admit that he's the greatest author ever, or one of, but BS is certainly the best choice as his successor. Where RJ could spin you a story with a thousand different plots all interacting at once, BS is the Master of the Twist. Before I read the epilogue to MB2, I thought his Rashek as the Lord Ruler and Kelsier's plan twists were just flukes, but now... wow...

Can't wait to see what the crew does in book 3.
