Reading Excuses / Something halfway witty, at least
« on: May 29, 2009, 01:17:45 AM »
I would like to point this out to you all:

Brandon Sanderson / Vasher's clothing
« on: May 25, 2009, 07:24:08 AM »
I'm debating about costuming it up for the Warbreaker release party as Vasher, but I'm not entirely certain what his clothing would look like. Any suggestions about his appearance?

I love this particular cover. Steve, you were totally right for saying it was awesome. I heartily agree :D

Aprilynne Pike / New York Times Bestseller!
« on: May 19, 2009, 09:09:47 PM »
I read off of Aprilynne's website that Wings hit #6 on the New York Times Bestseller List for Children's Chapter Books! Congratulations, Aprilynne! It's fantastic to hit the bestseller list, but it's even sweeter when your debut novel hits it.

Good job! :D

Reading Excuses / 4/29/09 - Chaos - Fateless, draft 2
« on: April 29, 2009, 11:00:09 AM »
Okay, so I know it's fashionably late, but revisions took much longer than expected. It added a good 8 more pages. I think the writing in this draft is far superior, but you can be the judge of it.

I mostly wanted to submit it as soon as I got it done because it's due 7pm tonight, so if you have the time or desire to read it before that point, thank you so much! If not, no big deal, I still want to know what you think here.

Sorry for the repeat submission, though. I'll churn out something new soon.

Old version = 3800 words long
New version = 6700 words long

I apologize for the length. It wasn't particularly practical to split it, as it's due later... today, I guess (it's not Tuesday anymore :P). Besides, I think if I split it around the 4000 word mark, you would just hate me so much.

Anywho, rip it to shreds.

Reading Excuses / Chaos - 4/13/09 - Fateless
« on: April 14, 2009, 07:24:43 AM »
Here is a short story which is for my Honors Seminar, Texts and Critics. It is limited at 10-12 pages, so hence it isn't too long. This is the first draft, and I fully intend to do a near complete revision (it needs serious work). Still, I promised you a submission, so a submission you shall get!

Rip it apart, because it will get graded eventually :D

Thank you for reading.

Reading Excuses / Ascension, Chapters 1 & 2 - 12/19/08
« on: December 29, 2008, 07:19:49 AM »
Here are the first two chapters of Ascension. Yusuke will send out Chapters 3 and 4 sometime tomorrow and post up a separate topic for those ones.

Just to clarify, I wrote these first two. Suke has written the rest.

Rip it to shreds, guys :P

Brandon Sanderson / Table of Allomantic Metals *Spoilers*
« on: December 16, 2008, 10:27:51 PM »
I just thought I'd post a separate topic for this, rather than having anything related to it on the MB3 Spoiler thread.

(Though I did mark this spoilers, just in case)

I haven't found any typos in it thus far, but I do have one suggestion about the God Metals: Perhaps the position of the Atium/Larasium symbol should be switched? If Larasium's alloys provide expanded Physical and Enhancement effects, shouldn't it's symbol be below that half of the chart (I'm talking about the symbol next to the "Mistborn" text at the bottom). I think that would make it more intuitive if the atium and larasium were switched like that.

Another thing on the atium/Larasium descriptions: "Larasium", in the description, is capitalized, whereas no other metal's name is capitalized. It just seems slightly inconsistent to me, but then again Larasium is pretty special.

And perhaps on the tin description, instead of "All must be increased at the same time", it could be "All will be increased at the same time." The way it's phrased now, it sounds like the Allomancer needs to work to increase all of the senses at the same time, whereas in reality he or she doesn't really have a choice in the matter.

Finally, on the Key for External and Internal Metals, it isn't exactly clear on first glance that the text "Internal Metals" is referring to the inner circle there.

In addition, I hope a wallpaper of 1400x900 is one of those "standard sizes" :D

Reading Excuses / December '08 - The Scepter of Infinity - Ch. 1, Part 1
« on: December 01, 2008, 03:39:05 AM »
I'm extremely frustrated that I did not have enough time to revise the second half of this chapter--cursed college assignments! I worry that it does not work well on its own. Tell me what you think there.

Thank you for reading :D Rip it to shreds, guys.

Reading Excuses / Submitting
« on: December 01, 2008, 02:09:18 AM »
All right, tomorrow is the first submission date. Excited? So am I.

I'd just to point out a few things about submitting.

First of all, before you can submit a work, you have to be on the email list. If you don't and you just feel like sending every on the list your piece anyways, or spam, we certainly won't read your stuff. No freeloading.

Secondly, the two submission dates are the 1st and the 15th of the month. The date that is yours should be on the aforementioned email list. As of right now, please only submit the work only on your submission date, not any earlier.

Third, when you are sending out your email, make sure you use these content tags: Language, Drug Use, Violence,  or Sexual Content if necessary. I don't expect there to be any problems with content (we'll see), but this way, no one is surprised.

Fourth, adhere to the Rules for formatting restrictions. Basically, don't send an entire novel in a submission, but other than that, don't worry about length too much--just do what feels right. Make it double spaced or 1.5 spaced (not single spaced), black text (no need to be fancy), 12pt font, and a legible font style like Times New Roman or Courier New. Remember to save the file as .doc or .rtf so everyone can read it.

And finally, once you've sent your work to everyone on the email list, make sure you post a new topic on the RE forum so we can discuss it!

The above is subject to change if the December submissions go awry, but I think we are pretty well set right now.

Have fun, and I look forward to reading all of your stuff!

Reading Excuses / Welcome to Reading Excuses (New readers please read)
« on: November 20, 2008, 09:45:07 PM »
So, on the Time-Waster Guide forums, there is one for "Writing Group" and then this "Reading Excuses" thing, which has in its description "An online Writing Group thingy for fans of Writing Excuses". Are you confused why there would be two writing group-styled forums here? Well, I can see how you are confused! It's not exactly clear what Reading Excuses is from the front page.

Fear not, for I shall explain!

The forum "Reading Excuses" has its origins on the Writing Excuses comment threads over at www.writingexcuses.com. In Season 2, Episode 5 - Writing Groups, several avid listeners wanted to set up their own writing group so they could critique their stuff. Thus, Reading Excuses was created as a place where fellow writers could meet up.

What Reading Excuses Is (and what it's not)

It's a writing group! You submit stuff, and other people give you constructive feedback on your work so you can become a better writer. Currently we have a monthly deadline for pieces, so if you are currently working on a novel, you submit a chapter every month. You can choose to either submit on the 1st of the month or the 15th.

I use "novel" as an example of what you can submit, but it's not like you have to submit a novel or anything. Short stories work just as well. Really, we are open to everything.

It's important to know that Reading Excuses isn't a place to talk about the Writing Excuses podcast. Those types of threads should go in the Writing Group forum.

Who can join the writing group on Reading Excuses?

Anyone who wants to! Though, you have to remember that this is mostly genre fiction stuff--mostly fantasy. But we are open to everyone who wants to write and critique. The more the merrier.

How do I get in on all the hot, steamy writing-critiquing action?

Well, first, you'd need to place your email on the Email List topic. As it stands now, the way you submit your stuff is just by sending your work to everyone on the email list. That means you do not actually post your writings on this forum--which can be pretty dangerous to do. So, email.

Here are some other topics I'd recommend you take a look at:

The Rules of Reading Excuses. In simple terms, if you submit something, you are expected to critique one other work at the VERY minimum. We understand how busy life can get, but we highly encourage you to take some time out and critique as much as you can--we really appreciate your opinion and any assistance you can provide. The Rules topic goes into greater detail about this, and all the other rules.

Genre! In this topic, your fellow RE members tell about what genre they write.

Your Background. Tell us a little about yourself in this topic.

Wait, so if I submit a work, that means I'm writing, not reading. Why is it called Reading Excuses, then?

Because it sounds cooler this way. Besides, you read other people's stuff :P Other than that, it's called Reading Excuses certainly not to pay homage to a certain podcast. That would just be like a blatant rip-off...

So, welcome to Reading Excuses (which may be abbreviated to RE sometimes)! We look forward to reading your works and hearing what you have to say about ours!

Reading Excuses / Your Background
« on: November 19, 2008, 08:15:19 AM »
So, in order to break the ice between different writers, I think it would be helpful if we got to know each other better. This way, we are more comfortable discussing things. Talk about any pertinent background about yourself that you are willing to share, or anything else you'd like everyone else to know. That would make this topic like the introduction topic elsewhere on TWG, but this pertains directly to our writer-ness, so it works being here.

A small profile about yourself couldn't hurt, or why you write what you do. Really, it's any background knowledge you want to give out. For example, your name, if you are want to give it out. Anything which makes Reading Excuses more homey for you.

Brandon Sanderson / For the Crew: Elmandr's Bet *SPOILERS*
« on: October 22, 2008, 03:02:28 AM »
This thread is to settle the bet regarding Elmandr's bet with myself.

The bet is as such:

Quote from: elmandr1
If Vin Doesn't unite with the mist spirit, i will eat my hat. Yes, i did say "eat my hat."

and i mean it, if it so happens that she doesn't, i will post a picture of me eating a ketchup covered cap...

But if it does happen--i am to be addressed--by all who post the word "aye" (indicating their challenge)--as Sir Elmandr1.

Elmandr claims he did, in fact win the bet because Vin merged with the mists. I, however, say that the bet clearly states that Vin unites with the "mist spirit". Very different. (You can see that bet on page 13 of the Countdown)

Either way, both Elmandr and I will present our "cases", and we have both decided that members of "The Crew" (essentially the theorizers on the board before MB3 came out) can render judgment.

Myself, I think that it is pretty clear that Elmandr lost the bet, but let's wait until both Elmandr and I post our case :P

Yes, this is the best way to settle bets! Shush.
