It's all going to be speculation because there is too much we don't yet know.  My logic goes towards balance.  We know that Allomancers have to burn metals to use the power.  This destroys the metal, so more is needed to continue.  Feruchemists must store the power to be used when needed, and so must pay a price as well.  I think someone dying to imbue power to a metal object that is then jammed into you is payment enough.  The Inq's powers are great, and it seems that anyone can become like them.  The most powerful magic has the highest cost.  Push, Pull.  Internal, External.  Again this is speculation.  I could be way off here.

Interesting.  Maybe they all look like Vern Troyer in their true form.  That would make me want to change bodies, anyway ;)

Brandon Sanderson / Vin's Heroic Exploit(ed)s ***SPOILERS***
« on: March 13, 2008, 09:14:01 PM »
By request, I am starting this thread about Vin's uncanny way of discovering just the right thing to do at just the right time, and how amazingly similar her personality and accomplishments are beginning to mirror Alendi?  She is an awesome character, but I just get this Goblet of Fire vibe sometimes.  Everything that has been done thus far has lead her right to the Well.  Could it be possible that she is getting little hints from somewhere?  Maybe something whispering to her occaisionally, through a little piece of metal in her ear?  After all, you have to make sure the "Hero" of your false prophecy completes her quest, right?  Just to be clear, this is not meant to slam Vin's abilities.  She will obviously do some fantastic stuff in book 3.  I am just trying to guage how diabolical Ruin's plot has been.

I know what you mean!  The belief is that a blood sacrifice is involved, but to what level?  The story lends little to the rules; even Allomancy is not fully understood yet.  It could just be assumed that the person needs to die.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Atium Mistings?

That wouldn't be any fun at all.  If he used that much of it, he would have noticed the amount that Straff was keeping for himself (you know he would have).  The Lord Ruler was all about control.  He controlled the nobles by allowing them to fight amongst themselves, and the best way to do that is to supply their most powerful weapons (Mistborn) with the most powerful metal.  He would dole it out very carefully, so he'd probably have plenty to spare, even with the Atium used to make a spike for each Inquisitor (my theory).

These are all good points, although I just realized that we have strayed away from the original point of this topic a little bit.  I think we have unearthed more possible evidence that Hemallurgists don't need to burn metals.  If we accept that Alendi used Hemallurgy to secure his power, and Allomancy was not yet known (or forgotten), then Alendi must have used his powers without burning metals, at least not in the same way an Allomancer does it.

That's a good theory.  Of course it could also mean that they could learn of a Kandra's existence by exerting that control.  The Mistborn could then make the Kandra kill itself, or stand there and allow itself to be killed.  Maybe they can only be killed in their true form?

In addition, not having the stash in Luthadel meant not having to transport it to Luthadel.  This would minimize the risk of the Atium shipments being hijacked.  No one would suspect this, either.

You could also do some killer Bruce Lee fyling side kicks, as long as you don't hit so hard you break your own legs, of course.

Vin's so smart! She's aways coming up with little ideas like that. ;D

It's uncanny, even.  Sounds familiar, too.  Kwaan had similar things to say about Alendi's exploits.

The great thing about fiction is that you can adjust the rules in special cases without breaking them, especially when there is precedence.  As an example, Atium let's you see a couple of seconds into the future, but Malatium lets you see into the distant past.  It is an opposite, but not an exact opposite.  Therefore, the opposing metal (or alloy) to the one Elend takes could temporarily remove your abilities, take them away completely,  or remove some abilities.  It can be anything the EUOLman wants, really.

You could all be right about the piercings coming from the Terris.  My angle was that Rashek hated the fact that a Khlennium was chosen as the hero of Terris prophecy.  If the piercings were a source of power, and another Khlennium tradition that was somehow infused with Terris prophecy, would he not hate that, as well?  I could be wrong about the Terris, but I don't feel they would be into the whole human sacrifice thing.  They were (and still are) keepers of knowledge.  They may have even been pacifistic by nature.

Agreed.  He seemed to be pretty badass.  Two points:
Shost, one thing we do know about Inq's is that few, if any, were Mistborn before being changed.  The process of Hemallurgy gave them Mistborn level abilities, and even enhanced healing and metal "seeing" abilities.  I bet it is even possible that some Inq's may not have even been Mistings beforehand.  My second point is that the Worldbringers were convinced by Kwaan that Alendi was the Hero.  It was also Kwaan who realized how perfectly he fit the prophecy; he was the first to realize that something was wrong, that his people were being manipulated to a very dangerous end.  Rashek could just have been jealous that an outsider had yet another feature that made him the Hero, especially when we now know that Rashek was told by Kwaan that they were all wrong about him.  He may even have believed that the Khlennium were responsible for manipulating the Terris into believing Alendi was the hero.  I just realized that my perspective of Rashek (pre-Lord Ruler)  may have changed a little bit.  I still think he is bad, but his anger may have been more than just petty jealousy and bigotry.

I don't think anything is a coincidence anymore.  Whose to say that there isn't naturally occurring fog mixed in with the Mists.  Statlin City, that's the name I forgot yesterday.  that's gotta be where the Atium cache is located.  I wonder what other clues will be found there?  Not to nitpick, Comatose but I think you mean a very low boiling point.  My only issue with this is that the mists appear no matter what the temperature is outside, and now come out even during the day, and even stay in one spot for days at a time.  This is not a weather related thing.  It is a supernatural phenomenon.  Maybe a residue of the power TLR used to change the world?  One can only guess.

Agreed.  How about this trick?  you have a dirtbag in front of you and behind you, both wearing metal breastplates.....Pull, jump out the way, and laugh as they meet in the air!   ;D
