Everything Else / Re: Google forced to reveal identity of blogger
« on: August 21, 2009, 07:07:29 PM »
I really like this discussion, and I have two comments.  First, I think we should separate Free Speech with Anonymity.  The blogger, at the time Google revealed his/her identity, was not found at fault for her words.  However, if your saying something about another person, negative or otherwise, you should have the right to know who it is.

StriderA,
As for Colbert and The Daily Show Vs Fox News; editing is a wonderful thing (R. Lee Irmy had an entire conversation with John Wayne in a beer commercial, despite Mr. Wayne being quite dead for many years).  These shows are supposed to be for entertainment; they are not designed to be entirely factual, to say the least.  Therefore, before passing judgement on FoxNews, I would strongly suggest learning the context of the statements made.  I would also recommend keeping track of the number of times Colbert and Stewart defame others in the name of comedy(which doesn't seem to bother you).  Ironically,  your post proves that there are people who harbor animosity towards FoxNews based on the "parody" of the stories told on these shows.  Does that mean that FoxNews can sue Viacomm for slander?  Or is it OK to defame people so long as it is supposed to be funny?

Everything Else / Re: Why America's Economy Sucks
« on: August 06, 2009, 09:04:34 PM »
Interesting read, although this article is from Rolling Stone, not exactly a source for truth and unbiased journalism.  Saying any one group of people is somehow engineering recessions for personal gain is a bit obtuse, if you ask me.  Yes there are greedy, evil  people out there.  What this article fails to account for is the repeated warnings about the over-inflation of housing prices and the iminent collapse that was sure to follow.  Was Goldmann-Sachs responsible for all the independantly-run mortgage companies that gave out loans the recipients could not afford?  This Taibbi guy should watch "A Beautiful Mind" a couple of times.  You can find patterns in anything if you look hard enough.

Actually, I found some of the responses to be quite entertaining.  One guy praised the "courage" of the writer for taking on this issue.  Right, like someone's going to come to the guy's house.  Ironically, if these people were as afraid of this exposure as believed, the article would never have been published.  There's also a guy who is convinced that we do not live in a capitolist economy.  Of course he also writes that the Articles of Confederation was subverted by the Constitution, as if to say the Constitution is evil.  These people are hilarious!  They spout off about regulations and accountability, yet I would bet most of them haven't done a lick of research to see how true the article is.  Lemmings, all of them.

Ryos - I believe most Politicians are well-intentioned, but lose perspective over time (there are always exceptions of course).  This is why all government positions should have term limits.

Kaz - Politicians are not the problem, we are.  We allow them to become corrupt by not paying attention to things until they bite us on the ass.  Besides, would you rather we go to a pure democracy?  Do you really trust America to make rational, sound decisions on issues as complicated as healthcare reform, bailouts, etc?  People get their news from Rolling Stone, for crying out loud!   ;)

At least until Sazed decides to give someone the power again.  Also, IIRC, Brandon said Marsh will be in the next series, and he will most likely be just as powerful as before.

It could be Ishamael, but I always thought it was Old Dark One himself.

You actually found irregardless in a dictionary?  It's a one-word double negative!  I will be disrespectless of your comments from now on.

Keeping with the unthaw theme; bi-monthly and semi-monthly can both mean twice a month or every other month.  I believe you can also sub in week or year.

Irregardless is not actually a word, so we don't have to worry about it not making sense.  :P

Ugh, I have to leave, and I forgot the word I wanted to mention!  Oh well, I'm sure I'll think of it on the ride home.

I'm sure the battle scenes will be fine.  Harriet and RJ's two assistants are helping him the whole way, and much of the last scenes were mostly written already by RJ.

Joe - Have you guessed yet that Semirhage was Anath, Tuon's TruthSpeaker?  If you read the scenes with her and Tuon again, it just jumps right out at you, especially how she gets the job (her former TS falls down a flight of stairs and breaks her neck, and somehow "Anath" is chosen as a replacement instead of the person being groomed for the position).  It seems no matter how often RJ wrote the "powerful influence coming out of nowhere" clue of a Forsaken most of us still miss it.

Your opinion on Semi's attack on Rand got me thinking; if she really wanted to kill him, you'd think she would have had some better attack than a little fireball......

Allwrong,
I myself quite enjoy the frailties and faults in a character, as it makes them more identifiable with real life.  I loved how RJ's view of how women would act if the gender roles were reversed matched my own (so I am a little biased).  Also, the men of WOT do some equally foolish things; is it OK for the men to behave poorly at times but not the women?

I really, really liked it.  I think the changes made between the last draft I read and the final were good ones, and knowing the story already didn't lessen the experience.  Adding to Dtbmnec's point about how well-written the characters are, how often does a sword become someone's favorite character?  Everybody loves Nightblood.

Everything Else / Re: Does this make anyone else sad?
« on: June 23, 2009, 02:50:47 PM »
This isn't so bad.  What makes me sad is what I saw at a restaurant a couple months back; A couple comes in with an infant and sits at the booth across from us.  They didn't talk to each other the entire meal, but instead were on their phones texting.  I was almost surprised the infant didn't have a phone.

One small point, Joe.  Mesaana is not going to be killed, just roughed up a good amount.  Shaidar Haran has access to a power that is unexplained, and I believe this is the only time he uses it (he attacks physically every other time).  His "Dark Stedding" ability should make things interesting in the last books.

Pewter not only makes you stronger, but it makes you quicker and more agile, and sturdier.  Vin kicks some enemies so hard their heads cave in like they were hit with a sledge hammer, yet suffers no damage herself.

Oh, sorry Kaz.  I thought you were on the other side.  I'll tell you what I would like; I would like some appendices that explain certain things, a la Lord of the Rings.  I would also be OK with the other 2 prequals if they were written by Brandon.  I wouldn't want to mush it up any more than that.  They are filler books, so they certainly don't need the scope of the main series.  It would be nice to see Tam's story.
