but what does that have to do with batman?

Back in the 1960's there was a Batman TV show in the USA and Robin was always saying "HOLY" followed by strange sayings.  You can see a montage of it herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nltVuSH-lQM

Necro (as in dead) rez (as in resurrection).  You resurrected a topic that had been dead for almost 5 years.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Recommend a book
« on: July 11, 2011, 07:33:22 AM »
Sure, I understand the difference. I honestly can't speak for how an LDS person would view the book. I think Krakauer does a pretty good job of remaining neutral in most of his work, but I thought his presentation of the history of Mormonism had an unfavorable slant. But again, I really shouldn't try to speak for an LDS person; I was just speculating. No offense intended. Have you read it, and if so, do you think Krakauer was guilty of editorializing at all? (Sorry to go off topic)

I haven't read it but I have heard about it.  From what I have heard he does a good job of telling the story but that he does have a slightly slanted/biased position against the LDS church.  In my experience that is pretty much par for the course.  Very few books about the LDS church, or and church for that matter, have a "favorable" slant, unless they are written by members (and then the slant is usually much more than favorable! lol).  We all have our passions and beliefs and it is very difficult to keep them from showing up in things like books.  That is not to say it is a bad thing, as long as we admit/own up to our biases and, if at all possible, limit their pervasiveness and influence on our work.

BTW, no offense was taken even before you said that none was intended.

I agree with both of these recommendations! I really like Malcolm Gladwell, and Krakauer is a great writer as well. I very much liked "Under the Banner of Heaven" (although Brandon probably wouldn't care for it very much, given the subject matter).

I don't know why.  He is LDS (and for the sake of disclosure, I am too) not fundamentalist Mormon.  The fundamentalists Mormons split from the LDS faith over 100 years ago and have about as much to do with it as the Lutherans had to do with the Catholic church 100 years after their split.

Books / Re: What are you reading, part 3
« on: July 06, 2011, 06:10:03 AM »
Currently reading The Never Ending Story.  I always wanted to after the movie came out but for some reason it was always out of the library.  In the years since, I had forgotten it until the other day.  I finally bought it and it is pretty good so far.  I am about half way into it.  Next on the list is either The Wise Man's Fear (which I have owned since the 1st day it came out but just haven't gotten around to reading yet), Tarzan King of the Apes (another that I have always wanted to read), or The Dark is Rising series (which I read years ago, but want to reread).  Decisions, decisions.

Books / Re: Has anyone read the dark elf/drizzt series
« on: June 09, 2011, 06:46:51 AM »
Do you want to read them in order of release or in timeline order?  The Icewind Dale Trilogy (The Crystal Shard, Streams of Silver, and The Halfling's Gem) was written/published 1st but The Dark Elf Trilogy (Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn) take place before it does.

If you want to start at the beginning of the whole story you need to start with the Dark Elf Trilogy.

And "clothe" (vs. cloth) and "breathe" (vs. breath)?

Books / Re: Steam punk research reading list

You may want to try Mainspring, Escapement, and Pinion (all 3 are by Jay Lake).  I have read the 1st 2 (but not Pinion yet) and like them both.  They are set in the same world but don't have too many overlapping characters.  I don't go out of my way to read steam-punk, but this series seemed like you couldn't get any more steam-punkier (is that a word, oh well).

Books / Re: Bill Watterson: Cruel loony or tender, loving cartoonist?
« on: January 09, 2011, 05:42:11 AM »
Bill wrote about his reasoning in the last Calvin and Hobbes collection.  The gist of it is that he was tired of the grind of 7 days a week comics and more tired of the publishers/newspapers/agents/comic artist syndicate and how they were trying to dictate to Bill how to do his comic.  If only he had waited 2-3 more years to bail, he could have switched to a different medium, like, say the internet.  There are TONS of web-only comics that thrive.  And besides, it isn't like he was a new comic strip, just starting out, with no audience.  He had a HUGE audience already and most of them (me included) would have followed him where ever he tool Calvin and Hobbes.

You can read more on it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Watterson.

Oh, also, were there creatures like chulls in White Sand? They seemed very familiar to me . . .

The creatures in White Sand are called Tonks and they are like horses but have reptilian/insect-like plates and horns on their heads.

I liked that one character who did that thing. That was so cool!

No, seriously. I liked the dock hand who helped buy books. He seemed like a super street-smart kid with a lot of heart.
That would be Yalb.  And yes, he was awesome. :D

Thank you.  I couldn't remember his name and I didn't have my copy of the book at hand to look it up.  I hope we see more of him in later books.
