Books / Re: What are you reading, part 3
« on: August 11, 2010, 02:31:33 PM »
So far the Malazan series breaks down this way for me:

Gardens of the Moon- At first confusing but was really interested in the characters and thus continued the series.

Deadhouse Gates: *shrug*

Memories of Ice: At the time easily turned into my favorite of the series.

House of Chains: Absolutely fantastic. One of my favorite story arcs of all time is the one between the Paran sisters.

Midnight Tides: Has it's moments. Introduced a few new neat characters. Such as two out of three of the Beddict brothers, but overall kinda  frustrating.

When I saw this I could only say one word: Wow! I absolutely loved this movie. The cast was absolutely phenomenal. Dicaprio is fast becoming my favorite actor with Inception, Blood Diamond, The Departed, and pretty much any movie he's made in the last 7 years. I was also very impressed with Levitt and hope he gets the nod to play the Riddler in the next Batman installment. And speaking of Batman how bout that Christopher Nolan? Is there a better writer/producer/director around right now?

Finally finished House of Chains. By far my favorite of the series. The ending of the Tavore vs. Felisin arc, wow! Absolutely heart wrenching. Book was full of awesomeness but I really enjoyed the scenes with Pearl and Lostara. Just a fantastic book. Midnight Tides is next. Hopefully Ganoes shows up in the next one.

Movies and TV / Re: Del Torro Quits the Hobbit

It was originally supposed to be a 3 year commitment. That's why Del Torro is leaving the project. He has other obligations and cant stay on for another 3 years. It all stems from MGM's serious financial troubles. They are rumored to be on the brink of bankruptcy. It's a shame. I'm a big fan of Del Torro(Pan's Labyrinth was fantastic) and combining Tolkiens world, Peter Jackson, and Del Torro should have been awesome.

About half way through House of Chains. Might be my favorite of the series so far. Lets see how it finishes up.

Books / Malazan question? *SPOILERS*
« on: April 02, 2010, 04:58:24 PM »
About done with Memories of Ice and one thing that's confused me is why the hell Toc left Lady Envy, Tool, and that crew. I mean he mentions that he would have surely died staying with them but I doubt any one of them would not have let that happen. He leaves them to join the Tenescowri in hopes to get to Dujeks army? Just really doesn't make any sense to me. Especially since he ends up not only in the Tenescowri but Anasters second in command. If he's just trying to blend in and get to the other Malazans that doesn't make sense.

Books / Re: New fantasy series for me please !!!

you can get all 10 of zelazny's amber series in one big paper back for like $15. it is called the big book of Amber. I have it on my shelf. I have not read it yet.

The first 3 books  of Stephen Kings The Gunslinger series are great, but then the series goes down hill. That is science-fiction/fantasy with a Stephen King twist. The first 3 are great. The main hero is a hero out of an old western, but there are monsters, witches, etc in it.

I liked all of the Dark Tower books. Great series. Hated the ending.

The post you are referring to was a link to a blog post by Neil Gaiman entited "george rr martin is not your bitch". He was getting really obnoxious emails from people.

Martin actually wrote hundreds of pages of the 4th book and then threw it all away and started over. His original plan was to jump ahead 5 years, but he didn't like it and started over. I think he spent 3 years doing this and threw it all away.

He has published other books in the meantime. Keep in mind that Fellowship of the Ring came out 15 years after the hobbit. I think Martin works on his books all the time, he is just a perfectionist and the doors are harder to open.

If you read his blog, he writes a chapter, then re-writes, then re-writes in 10 times more. Don't harrass the guy because he is too slow, just don't buy the next book. I don't see a big deal in waiting for a book. There are alot of other books to read.

I agree he definitely should not be harassed for not writing "quick" enough. I'll definitely be buying the next book. However, I can understand the perfectionist thing but he's done numerous other projects in between Feast and Dance that are unrelated to IaF. I just REALLY want to read the next book as many others do. It's really a credit to the story that many people absolutely can't wait to see what happens next. I'd just like to find out sooner rather than later.

It seems as though it will be a monster of a book whenever it is finished. Per GRRM's "Not a Blog":

On other fronts, I hit page 1311 yesterday. No, not done yet.

I agree. Although, I read a blog on how Martin does not owe his fans anything and that he'll get to it when he gets to it. "It" being A Dance with Dragons. He's brings up a couple of good points but in the end if you piss off your fans, regardless if the anger is justified or not, you won't be selling books like you used to be.

I wonder if he really just lost interest in the world he created. How long after A Dance with Dragons, whenever that comes out, will we have to wait for the next one?

Yah, I have high hopes for this show. I think they did a great job with the casting. Sean Bean as Eddard Stark is perfect, imo. An HBO series is the best way to bring this series to a visual medium. Making it into a movie you would have to cut out too much and if it wasn't on HBO it wouldn't be as gritty as it needs to be.

On a side note they cancelled Rome way too soon. It was an awesome show.

I finally started reading Memories of Ice. It helped me figure out just what Deadhouse Gates was missing: Anomander Rake.

The main character of the next trilogy will be a Nicrosil Misting.

Sigh. Nicrosil: The poor mans chromium.

Are television shows fully written ahead of time?

If they are, then why did the writers strike a couple years ago bring so many shows to an immediate halt?

They usually are not written ahead of time. However, Abrams and Lindelhof mentioned before season 4 that they already knew the ending of the show. They also said season 6 would be the last after season 4 ended.
