Brandon Sanderson / Re: Best Mistborn Fight Scene *SPOILERS*
« on: November 07, 2008, 08:38:27 AM »
Kelsier's fight with the Inquisitor was indeed better written in my opinion.  However, due to the way my mind works, converting everything i read into a near-movie quality picture in my mind (Exaggerated a bit, but I'm good at perceiving imagery) the fight between Vin and the Inquisitors in HoA just made go "Wow!"  Some say the fight wasn't epic, or that there were variables that, when taken into account, make the fight less enjoyable, but I found it fascinating to see what certain metals could do when push to insane extremes.  It re-sparked by love for Iron and Steel, in much the way the Kelsier/Inquisitor fight did.  The Mist just kept growing.  While in her normal state she was very much overpowered.  Yes, The inquisitors may have been recently made, but I don't think that a bunch of older ones could have fared much better...

I'm sure there could be metals that do that, though would that be under physical metals or some other new category.

HoA was my favorite with Final Empire being an incredibly close second.  I loved WoA too, but something about HoA clicked with me.  I just couldn't put it down.  The final battle between Vin and 13 Inquisitors, Elend and the Atium Mistings fighting for their lives and Vin empowering Elend in that fight.  All the things revealed and left open.  It just was all brilliant.  The reason HoA most clicked with me was the ending and how Sazed paved the way for a a lot more potential for Mistborn universe.

Movies and TV / Re: Off topic - FYI - Speaking of Book to TV..
« on: October 30, 2008, 08:00:26 PM »
I don't know.  I think it wouldn't do all that well as live action since the books seem to get hard as their progress to make live action without it seeming like it would need a massive budget to do some of the effects.  So, a trilogy of movies sounds more reasonable.  Also, I think that certain styles of animation would do it justice.  (I know it sounds like a silly idea)  However, the right artist could probably bring a fascinating take on the series.  *shrugs*

If it's making the series into an episodic format that's too difficult, then I can see portions that would be difficult to translate, but others that seem to break into that kind of format very well.  HoA would be a bit harder to do, but not impossible I think.  *laughs*  However, it's just my opinion so...yeah.

As for what they would do this is what I imagine.

Bismuth:  When you burn this, the next metal burns at half it's original rate, allowing longer usage of it.   However, once it begins burning, you cannot stop burning it until it's all gone.

Rosallum:  Making the metals of your allies burn slower, though their metals will continue to burn until used up against their will.

Cobalt:  Let's you show someone of your choice a future event taking place in the foreseeable future.  It's not much that you are seeing shadows (like with Atium), more, they see images and vague impressions.  This may or may not be useful since it may show either an unimportant event or something vital.

Stellite:  Let's you show others events in their past.  This may be useful in showing others past information that they have forgotten, or it can be simply for the other person to recollect.

Magnesium:  Let's you send out impression of thought or speech into the minds of someone within your eyesight.  This can allow for secretive communications as wells as making plans without being heard.  Though it's uses are not as numerous unless someone else can also burn this metal.

Magnox:  Opens your mind, allowing free thoughts to flow in.  In other words, for those who are easily susceptible to emotional allomancy, their thoughts will not be as private as they may think if someone around is burning Magnox.

Nickel:  Allows the one burning it to self purify their blood.  This allows the curing or eradication of certain diseases and poisons.  Also, it can burn away excess matter in the blood stream that may prove fatal.  It cannot effect Hemalurgic Spikes.  The metal burns remarkably fast, so full purification requires either a couple beads burned over a certain period of time or two Duralumin Bursts for fast action.

Iconel:  Allows you to purify the blood of an ally though physical contact.  By placing the hands on the chest or stomach, they may replicate effects similar to nickel.  It burns just a tad bit slower than it's base metal counterpart, however, It takes a bit longer for the person being purified to be cured, though two Duralumin bursts aught to do it.  However, Duralumin bursts leave the effected or yourself (with both metals) exhausted rather than burning it slowly and letting it steadily but surely burn out of your system.

Well, yes, that's what this thread was.  I was just presenting an idea.  *smiles*

I mean, there are so many different kinds of metal out there, so it would be hard to imagine that those could be the only ones with power.   (unless they actually are.  *shrugs*)

I mean metals like

Bismuth and Rosallum(Rose's Metal)

Cobalt and Stellite

Magnesium and Magnox....

Those are combos that sound cool.

There would be the sixteen metals and there would be something like sub-metals in a similar four category system.

Blood/Flesh Metals

Dream/Thought Metals

Time/Space Metals

Then Enhancement would remain the same.

Metals I thought would work were a lot like

Nickel and it's Alloy Iconel.  My thought was that these two metals were very fast burning and they allowed the user to purge their blood of all alien substances of organisms.  For example, if Vin had been able to burn Nickel when she had to drink the drug that was in the wine when she'd been captured by Yomen, then she would have been able to use one or two beads of it and clear it out of her system.  Then, Iconel would allow you to clot blood faster, allowing you to stop bleeding wounds and begin the healing process faster.  Not sure what the external versions would be.  *shrugs*  It was just an idea.

((Sorry if this is in the wrong place))

I'm just a bit curious about what makes certain metals not work for Allomancy.  I know that silver and lead cannot work as the dominant metal in a mixture or by themselves, though they can change the effects of other metals that can be burned.  So, my question really is "What metals do you think could be used for Allomancy, and which ones do you think couldn't work?"  ( I know that there are a lot of different types of metal, but still.)

EDIT:  Oh and you can even go as far as posting what you think they would do if you burned them if you're feeling some real inspiration...

Books / Re: Fan Fiction: Good or Evil
« on: October 22, 2008, 11:23:13 PM »
In my opinion it really depends.  There's a stark contrast between a good continuation and a Fan Fiction.  Sometimes others authors can expand the universe of a story in meaningful and interesting ways.  Though if you guys are referring to the strict abuse of already existing literature and the changing of already existing story elements in order to write out what you think would have been cool happening, then I would say it does more harm than good.

Uhmm, fanfiction writers should never send their ideas to the actual writers. Wise writers will never use ideas that their fans send them (unless those fans are alpha readers the writer has selected to give feedback on his or her stuff before it gets published).

I don't know about that.  I see nothing wrong with getting inspired by the idea of another.  Not to the point of plagiarism or anything, but to like and idea and considering it is not always a bad move, though I do agree that it can be under certain circumstances...

Writing Group / The Found (This is a Fan Fiction...)
« on: October 06, 2007, 06:17:08 AM »
Okay, so here I am.  About to post a fan fiction and I find my self a bit nervous....or at least I think that's what it is.  It could just be be that my literary paranoia is just now kicking in, or maybe I'm just not used to writing in this series.  I've made the first two chapters of a Mistborn related story.  However, they down on paper, so I'll have to type them.  *head hurts*  So here it is.  A series of stories compacted into one title.

The Found
By Mike P.

Story One: Part One

The figure in the middle of the room sank to his knees.  He panted, his lungs felt empty.  If he wasn't burning pewter, he probably wouldn't have had enough strength to stay conscious.   The boy in the center of the large stone chamber looked at the large creatures laying on the floor around him.  They were each impaled or decapitated, their blue-ish skin were covered in blood.  The boy in the center of the room flared pewter, stumbling drunkenly to his feet.  There was no way out.  He'd killed the Koloss in this room, but he knew that they were going to come back, and in greater number.  He walked over to the corpse of a woman wearing a blue dress, though it was hard to tell, it was drenched in blood.  There was a vile of metal in a bag next to the woman and the boy took it.  He uncorked it and drank it, his throat burned from it.  He kept burning pewter, and then walked around the room.  There was nothing that could help him here.  This vile of metal would only last him about two hours and at the rate he was burning pewter, it may not even last him that long.

The room around him was dark, and even when burning tin it was hard to see where he was going.  He banged on the door;  it was metallic.  He burned steel and Pushed on the door.  It didn't budge, it must have been heavily fortified to keep even allomancer inside this room.  He flared it as hard as he could, the door creaked and began to bend outward.  He felt his reserve of Steel vanishing, but it was working.  The door's hinges popped out of the sockets and then the door fell down.  He was out of Steel, but at least he had a way out.  He walked out of the room, giving it one last glance.

"So many people died, all because of me."  He continued to walk, the door had led to a corridor made out of a green and black metal that resembled marble mixed with steel.  The green metal seemed to glow when he burned tin, even though it didn't emit any light.  He looked down at the floor and found a small bit of the green metal, it must have been torn off when the koloss came this way.  He put it in his pocket and then went on.   He felt his pewter reserve running low.  He simmered it in his system.  It would last him longer this way, but he could now faintly feel the cuts on his arms and legs.  He could also feel the fractured rib in his side, though it just felt like a small sting at the moment.  He winced at the increase in pain.  He looked forward and saw a light at the end of the corridor.  He ran, he hoped it was the way out of this place.  He was already thinking about what he was going to do after he left this prison.    He had pictures of himself kissing the probably damp earth on the outside.  Then after wards he probably would run around in the mists.  As he approached the end of the tunnel,  He came out into a white room.  The room was a coliseum.   The roof was so high it was concealed by a veil of shadows.  He got an eerie feeling in this room, however, he could see or hear no one in the area.  Suddenly there was a loud Bang!  He looked back the way he'd come in and there was now a solid stone wall in the way.  This was bad.

Site News / Re: Introduce yourself - right on!

Hi everyone, I'm Mike, and I live in Portland, Oregon.  I'm about to turn fourteen and start High School next year.  (i'm not looking forward to it.)

I'm fond of writing short and long fiction of sci-fi stories.  However, I'm cursed with a very short attention span and so i've had alot of trouble finishing those stories.  *sighs and shake his head*  I've tried fan fictions on occasion, and I usually only do them on books I like, however, I've always though Fan fictions were incredibly shaky ground for me, hardcore fans are sometimes hard to please.

I'm not too sure what people think of my writing outside of my home and classroom.  I've been told i'm good, but I always take good criticism badly.  I tend to wonder how true it really is...but that's just me.

From first glance it looks rather cluttered.  I was wondering if it would be a good idea, to make a section for stories and non-stories.  True it's not to difficult to search for the thread you wish to view, but it's just an idea.
