I am excited about Stormlight being 10 books!   I started with both Wheel of Time, Song of Fire and Ice, and many more with the first releases so it has been a long road,  with so many series finally coming to an end I am glad there is another that will be my friend for years to come.

The small Roshar image - Back cover small glyphs are duplicates of the  Roshar images, then split in half and 1 half is a mirror image.

By taking the Shadesmar image and flipping it horizontal and then again vertical the small glyphs align.

I've always kinda thought it was odd how everything about Shinovar is more like our world. All the unique things about Roshar don't seem to apply there.

It does seem to imply that Cultivation and the Shin are closely related.

The other odd thing about Shinovar is that the highstorms never reach it.  They apparently can't get past the mountains.

This is probably connected as well.  No highstorms==no reason for the world to adapt to hurricane-force winds.

It could be as simple as evolution, or it could be a different Shard's domain, or what is left of one.

There are many hints that the beleifs of the Shin lean towards being effected by or including Cultivation.
They respect Farmers and craftsmen "He who adds is to be revered." Szeth refers to himself as "he who takes away"

The misted mountains do not just stop the storms they cause the storms to break apart and fade away, I think there may be more to it.

Here's an editable table I made:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Al9mpDUN_8rSdGZIcU1DbFJ1amRLb2l6UVZwRWtEQ3c&hl=en&authkey=CPyvzssM

I still like the idea of 1173 being "the present", and with age measured in Weepings it seems to work out.
According to the table, Kaladin experienced a Weeping between leaving Amaram's army and arriving in the Shattered Plains.  Does anything in the text support this?
What I coukld find:
Kaladin speaking with Tvlakv in Chapter 4 (pg 78 ebook)
Tvlakv says "Long ago? you can not be older tghan eighteen years, deserter."
It was a good guess, He was nineteen. Had it really only been four years since he'd joined Amaram's army?

Right before Kaladin suggests to the bridgemen that what else they could try  is escape, he is  tlaking with Syl, and ready to give up since "He Can't save them."  he finds a stone, and remembers Tien, and talks how he recognized what was happening, how he always felt mdespair take him duing the weeks of the Weeping.   This is only a hint, or it could have some other meaning, or none at all. Most likely it depresses him because there are no highstorms, and he has always probably gained something from those.

We know that chickens come from Shinovar. That's the only hint we get that there might not be birds on Roshar. We know there are Skyeels, so clearly not everything is crustacean. I think the bottleneck is actually the nesting; the birds themselves could probably find shelter in a highstorm, but where are they going to nest? Even birds that build nests out of mud would be out—where would they find mud? (Crem, maybe?)
Burrowing Owls .

What we do know on the timing in the books:
The Vengance pact  and the War on the shattered plains has been going on for 6 years.
Shallan leaves home and meets up with Jasnah 6 months later in Kharbaranth.
Shallan spends an additonal 2-3 months with Jasnah before the end of the book.

7.5 years agoTien was 10 and  Kaladin was 12
5.5 Years ago Kal is 15
5 Years ago Tien and Kaladin are conscripted into the army ( 4 year term)
Tien dies 4 months after joining. Took Kaladin a year before he pulled out of depression. Kaladin now 16-17)
Kaladin is 19 years old at the time he is in the Slave wagon arriving at the Shattered Plains 8 Months after leaving* Amarams Army.

Szeth becomes Truthless.
2 years Later Szeth Kills Gavilar.
5 more years yater Szeth is owned by Took and is in Bavland and is 35 years old.

@FollowYourMuse - Isn't it Nahel? In any case, it looks like you probably got the source right - 'Nahel' doesn't bring up much.

I couldnt find much on Nahel either,  but I wouldnt think it would be an exact thing anyway

Kaladin x2
Dalinar
Shallan
Szeth
Talenel

definately Jasnah

Quote
Brandon Sanderson Interview: I used six main characters; there was another character who has not yet appeared in the new version, and Jasnah was a main character with as many viewpoints as the others. It was too distracting, too much to juggle.
http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com/2010/09/new-brandon-sanderson-interview.html

I can not think of what Adolin could bring that a Dalinar  couldnt, and what in his past do we need to know?

More Likely I see
Navani
Taravangian
And maybe Rock  or Sigzil or one of the other Bridgeman. There are many Questions there.

Would love to have more from Axies, or Ishikk

Was each order established by one Herald? In any case, it doesn't necessarily conflict. I don't think we have quite enough information to figure out every detail just yet.

I agree we do not have enough information, my guess would be that though it might be tied to the Heralds, that it might also be tied to what type of Spren that they are attached to. Which may have been originally determined by the Heralds.
We know that Syl is a binding Spren, and an Honorspren.

Nahal: Definition
The name Nile (Greek: Neilos) is thought to be ultimately derived from the Semitic Nahal meaning "river" from which the Hebrew nachal is derived
-to lead or guide to a watering place, bring to a place of rest, refresh
-carry, feed, guide, lead gently, on
-A primitive root; properly, to run with a sparkle, i.e. Flow; hence (transitively), to conduct, and (by inference) to protect, sustain -- carry, feed, guide, lead (gently, on).

Heb. nahal, in winter a "torrent," in summer a "wady" or
        valley (Gen. 32:23; Deut. 2:24; 3:16; Isa. 30:28; Lam. 2:18;
        Ezek. 47:9).
Nahar, a "river" continuous and full, a perennial stream,
as the Jordan, the Euphrates (Gen. 2:10; 15:18; Deut. 1:7; Ps.
        66:6; Ezek. 10:15).

The Arab root nahal has the meaning of quenching ones thirst. the noun manhal - a watering place in the desert.

I still dont see why Jasnah cant just have the same spren as Shallan does, she could have to tell a truth as well, she does after all look for truth in history, and she seems very honest to herself and others.  also do the things you say to the spren need to actually be true, or do you just have to believe it?  and can you use them as a sort of magic eight ball?

I think just by thinking of the series, and that we know there are 10 orders of the knights Radiant, that it would not make sence for 2 of the main POV charachters to be of the same order.

I think Jasnah's coment  could point to this, that she assumes Shallan is the same , of the Same order,  but realizes that she isnt.
Quote
Jasnah frowned, taking the image. "You see beings like this? In Shadesmar?"
...
Jasnah held up a hand. "These are a type of spren, Shallan. They are related to what you do." She tapped the desk softly. "Two orders of the Knights Radiant possessed inherent Soulcasting ability; it was based on their powers that the original fabrials were designed, I believe. I had assumed that you... But no, that obviously wouldn't make sense. I see now."

Brandon Sanderson / Spren - (Major Spoilers TWoK)
« on: September 27, 2010, 04:53:13 PM »

In thinking of Shallan and her ability to see the Spren, in her memories that she unconciously then draws, I am wondering if there is any correlation or effect on the Spren, similar to the 2 Ardents Geranid and Ashir that find measuring the spren and writting it down "fixes" them at a certain height/aspect.

So far all orther surgebinders are associated with Spren in some way
"All other surgebinders"?

There's Kaladin and Szeth. That's all we've seen.

I should have said all other surgebinder\windfinder\non-fabrial soulcasters (or maybe suspected new radiants?)

Jasnah, Elhokar, Shallan, Kaladin,
Jasnah isn't associated with Spren as far as I know. She seemed surprised when Shallan told her about the symbolspren.
I think Jasnah is only surprised that Shallan see's them out of Shadesmar, we do not have evidence of Jasnah tied to a Spren.
But Jasnah certainly knows of the connection to Spren and soulcasting, and identified them in Shallan's images. So we know she has seen Spren, and interacted with them in some form relating to soulcasting.
