Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Thrill (Spoilers)
« on: September 30, 2010, 02:01:16 AM »
The Thrill is definitely supernatural in my opinion. Just look at how its used in the story. It isn't just something he feels, when the thrill takes him he seems to fight better, faster, there are times when Dalinar lets the Thrill take him and a little while later he looks back in shock at the hundreds of people he's killed.

Just look at these quotes:

Quote
He was losing his thirst for battle. That worried him, as the Thrill—the enjoyment and longing for war—was part of what drove the Alethi as a people

Quote
The Thrill excited him, strengthened him

Quote
He felt a spike of regret along with displeasure at the Thrill. Surely these Parshendi—these soldiers—deserved respect, not glee, as they were slaughtered

Quote
He remembered the times when the Thrill had been the strongest. Subduing the highprinces with Gavilar during their youths, forcing back the Vedens, fighting the Herdazians and destroying the Akak Reshi. Once, the thirst for battle had nearly led him to attack Gavilar himself. Dalinar could remember the jealousy on that day some ten years ago, when the itch to attack Gavilar—the only worthy opponent he could see, the man who had won Navani’s hand—had nearly consumed him.

Quote
His army surged forward behind him, and the Thrill bubbled within. It was power. Strength greater than Shardplate. Vitality greater than youth. Skill greater than a lifetime of practice. A fever of power. Parshendi after Parshendi fell before his Blade. He couldn’t cut their flesh, yet he sheared through their ranks. The momentum of their attacks often carried their corpses stumbling past him even as their eyes burned. The Parshendi started to break, running away or falling back. He grinned behind his near-translucent visor

I say it is natural, it is simply adrenaline. But I  agree with the theory that while it is natural Odium has been influencing it and making it stronger.

I don't think it meant becoming a light eye literally but more social status wise.
That's not the impression I got. According to Kaladin (in one of the flashbacks to when he was growing up):
Quote from: Way of Kings, page 252
If a man wins a Shardblade on the battlefield, his eyes become light.

And the context of that quote makes it fairly clear that's something very different than simply gaining the social status of a lighteyes by marrying one.

I have no idea why Szeth's eyes aren't always light, though. Maybe he didn't win his Shardblade in battle? It's possible that makes a difference.

It could be possible that is has been slightly mangled by rumors, as we know Szeth's eyes only go light when he summons it, because probably next to none of the darkeye population has a shardblade except on a rare occasion it is possible that it has just been twisted around like hearsay normally is, the only reason I think that is because I don't recall anyone having a firsthand account of a darkeye becoming a lighteye and it is something so rare that it could easily get twisted around.

Normally having a shardblade automatically made you a light eyes. But as we can see from Szeth, this is not always the case. Szeth's eyes only change colour when he summons the blade. And Taln's eyes seem to be permanently dark. Yet I seem to recall a part (I think it is of Dalinar's vision of the radiants giving up their swords and armour) where the radients eyes were almost white.

So it is really hard to work out what is happening with the lighteyes.

I don't think it meant becoming a light eye literally but more social status wise.

I agree obtaining more than 1 shard will have the shards form together, but not necessarily that Sazed is Cultivation.
Again, Sazed can't be Cultivation, because Cultivation is female.

I never said Sazed was Cultivation, I just don't like to downright knock someone's theory off the bored.

What Never said. :p
I have a theory that "Cultivation" is the entity Sazed become (simply because that concept incorporates both Ruin and Preservation so well IMO) after becoming a "full" deity.

Quote
This doesn't really jive with the idea that Roshar has 3 shards, if Sazed was Cultivation, there would be 4 shards.
We are talking about gods here, who says shardholders can't talk to each other over long interstellar distances?  ;D
Quote
Unless, when someone gets 2 shards, they form 1?
That's what I was suggesting.
I agree obtaining more than 1 shard will have the shards form together, but not necessarily that Sazed is Cultivation.
If something is broken you can start putting it back together, so why couldn't you do that with the shards, eve if you are missing some pieces you just won't have the whole thing, just a bigger broken part (Larger shard in this case).

He explains somewhere why he became Truthless, it's not some small paragraph, but it's either in the book or I'm quite insane, but the second is possible b/c I'm the voice in YOUR head, not my own.
I believe you just might be insane, I can't recall reading something like that at all and generally I have a good memory of what I have read.

I want Shallan to somehow die. Hate me. And I know it won't happen.
Through reading the book I couldn't help loathing the person she was.

Do we really know enough about the parshendi to judge whether they are motivated by hate? Everything they have done is clouded in mystery, making it hard to discern their true motives.
We know how they act.

Either they're not motivated by hate, or their definition of "hate" is very different from ours.

How would you define assassinating Gavilar? It is not too much of a stretch to say he was killed because of hate. He have no idea what there motives behind that move was. How about declaring war? War is usually driven by hate. What's there motive behind the war? we just dont know. It could very well be hate.
It is a stretch to say that he was killed because of hate, because so far, they haven't shown any emotional animosity towards any humans, and we have no idea why they killed him in the first place.

My point exactly. We cannot say for certain it is hate, but neither can we rule it out.
We might not be able to rule it out but I find it highly unlikely that it is hate due to the way they treat their enemy on the battle field. Why would hateful people show respect and honor.
Hateful people would have attacked Kaladin as soon as his back was to him and he was going for their shardbearer.
Hateful people wouldn't salute someone for being able to flee, to would be angry.
So where you can't say with 100% surety that it isn't hate, it doesn't seem very likely.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Dalinar's gift and curse (lolSpoilers)
« on: September 18, 2010, 05:42:12 PM »
I think it might be that he asked for Navani, and his curse was his wife dying and/or losing memory of her.
If he had asked for her, I don't think there would have been a fifteen year delay until they became a couple.

Another possibility is that his wife (or someone else) was dying, and he asked for them to be healed. If it was his wife, then that would be... ironic... to a depressing degree.
Wouldn't be the first time I have seen a delay in stuff like that but yeah when I think about it it isn't that good of a theory.

So you mean that Dalinar used the nightwatcher to magic his brother dead after he conciously chose to leave Nevani to him? :/

Wouldn't be the first time he thought of killing his brother over her. And probably didn't intend for his brother to die.

If it had "Bridge 4, where being a soldier is for girls" I would buy it.
And I don't even own T-Shirts, go go polo shirts?

All of his books save the Librarians (Can't remember real name) take place in the same "universe" called Cosmere, all the books come in chronological order so it goes, Elantris, Mistborn Series, Warbreaker, WoK.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Ruin-like Odium?
« on: September 11, 2010, 07:53:45 PM »
Personally, I can't think of a reason that Odium would want people to know he's coming.
I don't think that is what the OP is trying to get at, I believe he means to trick the people into doing something that he wants or will benefit him like how Ruin did.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Money

Libraries  are great, except when the books are treated poorly, go go Hawaii and the general thought that books are useless. >.<
I can't stand reading from books that have been treated poorly, I mean sure I can understand the spine of paperbacks but when the pages are covered in stains and smell very strongly of smoke it just disgusts me, so I prefer to find a way to acquire the books I want, normally it is a deal between my parents that every time I memorize a new piece of music for my private lessons I can pick out a books less than 15 USD.
