Brandon Sanderson / Re: Signings This Week

Check out this week's City Weekly! (the cover looks like the Breakfast Club)

Brandon is featured in the calendar section on page 22.  Very large picture and a six line article about the signing at Sam Weller's.  Also plugs brandonsanderson.com.

Congrats!

Take an optical mouse and put a small post-it note over the light on the bottom.  Bonus:  Write April Fools on the post-it.

I did this to a co-worker one year and it took her at least 20 minutes of turning off her computer and messing with the cables before she figured out it was the mouse.

Very funny.

Stephanie Fowers / Re: Provo School Libraries news article

Here's a link to the article in case someone else wants to read it:

http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635194749,00.html

My mom is a high school librarian in Jordan School District.  In 1988, Jordan dumped all their elementary school librarians and put in aides with just HS diplomas.  But now, because their test scores have dropped significantly, they've had to hire elementary literacy specialists to bring the scores back up. AND...they also had to write special curriculum so that 4th grader teachers could teach library research skills, because they need it to pass the standarized tests.  It would have been a better investment if they had just kept the librarians in the first place.

I'm just glad to hear there are other people out there that  can see how dumb this is, and how much they are shortchanging the students in the long run.

Stephanie....were you quoted in the Deseret News regarding the "dumping" of all the school librarians?  I think I saw your name in the article? If so, great quote!

This is probably TMI but....oh well.

I, too, hate mushrooms because one time when I was little I ate a mushroom I found growing in our yard.

When my mom found out, she called Poison Control and they told her to give me a "medicine" called Ipecac to make me puke it up.  Gross!  (Even the name Ipecac....doesn't that sound like gross!)  I even had to stay home from the ward dinner because I was sick".

Eww...so, ever since then....I hate mushrooms and I won't eat them.

I feel closer to you all....now that I have shared this with all you complete strangers.  LOL

I love Daria.  Funny, funny show.  Too bad it's not on anymore.  Have they released it on DVD?

I use Firefox and I see the ads.  (P.S. I don't mind the ads. There is advertising everywhere else so I don't really even notice them. And earning $$$ is always good.)

I learned in a Women's Studies class in high school (and maybe all you students of literature can dispute this) that back in the day, fairy tales were a way to teach children lessons about life and to prepare them for things to come.

For example, back in the day, a higher number of women died in child birth than do today.  So there was a good chance that a girl would either marry someone whose wife had died and they would be a stepmother to his children, or they themselves would die before their children were grown.  So Cinderella was told to children to prepare them for this situation.

Again I don't know how true this is, but it is an interesting way to think about fairy tales.

The Live Trace feature is new to Illustrator CS2.  Very cool when it works, but sometimes needs a little help to find the edges.

Funny thing.  I was just at the library this week and I looked up Elantris for a friend.

Salt Lake County Library System has 9 copies and they were all checked out.  In addition, there was a waiting list of 9 people to get the book when it comes in.

InDesign is fantastic!  I worked as a graphic designer for three years and when we made the switch to InDesign, it was a happy, happy day.

At my old job, the Adobe people came out and did a presentation right before CS2 came out.  They were actually asking us attending the presentation what our pain points were and how could they make the program easier and more efficient to use.

Contrast that with when we called Quark tech support one day.  After waiting on hold forever, they basically told us too bad and to deal with it. That's just the way the program is.

Makes you wonder why Quark is losing their market share, huh?

Okay forgive me.  But here's one more.

These guys act out old school video games in real life and tape it.  Again, very random but pretty funny.  My favorite is the Paper Boy one.
