Brandon Sanderson / Re: What should I read next?

Another good author is L. E. Modesitt Jr.
His "Saga of Recluse" is good if you can handle weird writing techniques. When not narrating for the main character (1st person past tense), he writes in 3rd person present tense (He goes to the store and sees his friend there). It gets a little annoying but the magic system is pretty cool. It's based one the balance between order and chaos.

Also, Modesitt's "Imager" series is good. I'm in the middle of the first one, Imager, but it's still pretty good. a believable magic system.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Magic Systems

One that I've always liked is based on using one's weakness as strength. So my protagonist could be blind, but in using the power would be able to see. But what i was thinking is that the power would swap physical attributes that are weaknesses to the magicians. So a blind person would temporarily blind someone else, while being able to see. As they mature in their understanding of the magic system, they would learn to find weaknesses that are not as obvious, but that would still illicit a victorious outcome. For example, a 90-pound girl could assimilate the strength of her muscle-builder opponent to be able to take him down. Or shyness, intelligence, attitudes, or feelings could be done the same way. The cost of doing so would be fatigue, depending on how long of a duration it was used, the distance it was done, and the difficulty of switching the attributes (not sure how I would rate things yet)

That's one I've kinda been working out for a few years, but I think it's pretty cool.

But I've never heard of a magic system which allows for travel across worlds.

You should check out Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar Saga. It involves magic that allows travel across worlds. And it's quite good.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn Movie

Mistborn was actually the first book/series I read that I would not like to be made into a movie. I love the book just the way it is. I think the zinc and brass burning is too complex to be shown on screen. The description of rioting fear and soothing away calmness, satisfaction, etc. is just not able to be done on screen, in my opinion.

One movie that did this well, however, and a good example of what might be involved in BS's futuristic Mistborn trilogy is Push.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hoid??
« on: July 22, 2009, 03:56:28 AM »
ok, so we know that Hoid is named explicitly in Elantris, HoA, and Warbreaker, and that he could have also appeared elsewhere under a different pseudonym or under no name at all. I have two thoughts unrelated to the current discussion (I think) and I was too lazy (and I didn't want spoilers to Elantris as I havent' finished it yet (I'm into part II)) to read the entirety of the posts.

1. Could Hoid be an anthropomorphic form of God (or an all-knowing, all-powerful being) who has created (or governed over) each of these universes? This would explain the grasp of the knowledge he has of the origin of the Hallandren God Kings in Warbreaker.

2. Or Hoid could be a hero/protagonist in a future Sanderson novel? perhaps his planned multi volume series  (I believe it is Way of Kings) http://bit.ly/SWWUs He would have the ability to travel between worlds/dimensions, so he's some kind of master of time and space.

Just a couple thoughts I had in mind.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Warbreaker Question ***Spoilers***

In response to all your questions:

"There's always another secret"

We may get an answer, but I rather enjoy the fact that he doesn't answer every question. Keeps us thinking about the book after we've read it.

Can't wait till Way of Kings!
