Brandon Sanderson / Tower guards?
« on: October 18, 2010, 08:21:20 PM »
It looks like the Tower Guards for the Towers of Midnight tour were notified today. Anybody from TWG get selected? I applied last year and again this year, but no dice. Oh well. I don't think I'll be applying again. Apparently I don't have what they are looking for.

Before it looks like I am having a pity party, (Okay, maybe a little one  :)) I am very excited to be at the midnight signing in Provo and I will be there very early to get a great spot in line!

Congratulations to those who were selected!

Table-Top Games / Re: Dominion. Anyone played it?
« on: October 01, 2010, 04:52:48 PM »
I'm one of the artists for Dominion (there are many). I did the Adventurer card in the original, and some others include the Merchant Ship and the Treasury in Seaside.

That is awesome! I love the cards. There is a lot of fun artwork.

I'm a huge fan of all kinds of games, and I think Dominion is great. It tends to work well for new people as well as gamers. I will say that the look of it is pretty intimidating for new people (and that's coming from one of the artists). I think it looks a little too much like Magic: The Gathering, and may scare some people off. I'm always convincing people it's not nearly as complicated as it looks.

I have noticed the same issue. My wife refused to play it at first. Now I can't get her to stop.  :) We converted all of her family with one holdout. Her dad. He loves all sorts of games, but refuses to try to learn. We'll try again this weekend.

Having said that, the game my wife and I can't get enough of is Race for the Galaxy. It's my favorite card game by far. It does have a pretty nasty learning curve though, so I tend not to introduce it to new gamers.

We'll have to try that one out. Thanks for the tip.

The pronunciation is supposed to be like "Seth".

It's about time Brandon used my name in a book.  :P (Of course, it being coincidence, I can't really take credit for it.)

CCGs / Dominion. Which heading is correct?
« on: December 07, 2009, 03:20:47 AM »
I posted about the game Dominion under the table top heading, but then I got to thinking that Dominion is a card game, so I'm going to repost here. Mods, if the double post doesn't work, I'll let you decide which one to keep. Thanks. :)

My brother broke out Dominion over the Thanksgiving holiday. I didn't play at first because it looked too complicated. (Ha, and Magic isn't? :)) Anyway, the first time I played I loved it. It is a card game where decks are built, but all the cards are included in the main game.

At first I thought, okay, MTG with less cards, which it is. But I also love the diverse gameplay. The game has 25 'Kingdom' cards, but only ten are played in each iteration, making it hard to repeat the same game. The card interactions are fun, some of them matching the best combinations in Magic.

If anyone has some thoughts on the game, I would love to hear them.

Man, I thought Jason was going to bring more. To be fair though, Brandon has a lot of experience. Thanks to those who streamed the video. It was fun to watch!

CCGs / Brandon vs. Jason

Anybody else going to follow the match tomorrow? I haven't played a good match in years, let alone watched one. I wish my wife were more into it. Oh well. Go Brandon. (I like you too, Jason, but I have been a fan of Brandon longer than I've known about you.) :) :)

AGrey, I reread my last message and realized I responded a little harshly. Sorry about that. I agree with you that the organizers are looking for certain talents and skills, which is why you(deservedly) were selected. The point I disagreed with is that they were looking for the same in every candidate.

Anyway, best of luck at your signing. And may the Source be with you. (Sorry Jason, that's too good a line to pass up!) :)

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I worked at the BYU Bookstore for three years and still have a relationship with several of the General Book staff. D'oh.
I guess that's what my point is, AGrey. You were rewarded for having a bookstore background, but that's not all they were looking for. Did you read Jason's post? They took FANS. CASUAL FANS. Hmm, interesting that. So, maybe not so much of a job interview, but how can one make one's self interesting to the powers that be.

If I am coming off as a touch bitter, I will admit I was a little at first. But I can appreciate the task of sifting through the applications and trying to find the best candidates is a difficult one. There isn't room for all. So the best the losers can do is learn from this year and try again next.

Thanks Jason! I probably should have mentioned that I broke the rules while on my LDS mission in order to read A Crown of Swords the day it came out and that a friend and I went to four different stores after midnight for Knife of Dreams only to find out none of the stores in the area were putting their stock on the floor until the next day, let alone having a midnight party. :)

My biggest weakness was probably my brevity. I was warring with myself on how much to write because I did not want to add to the overwhelming reading you guys had to wade through.

Jason, thanks for your insight. I guess I'm a little confused. In my application I wrote about being a fanboy of both authors. What should I include next year to warrant greater consideration?

Anyone know why there is one person doing the two signings in Utah? I would think they would like to spread it out a little.

Brandon Sanderson / Provo Storm Leaders.

I noticed on Dragonmount.com that there will not be Storm Leaders for the Provo Release party. Ookla, you mentioned that Brandon still needs people to help out. Where do I submit my candidacy?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Gathering Storm Chapter One
« on: September 07, 2009, 03:12:41 PM »
Ha! people expect Robert Jordan, but if Brandon tried to sound like RJ they would still be mad. Some people will naysay anything. I loved the Chapter. I am now officially drooling over the The Gathering Storm.

Like others who have posted, I noticed a difference at first, but once I got into the story, it went away. I know one chapter is not much to base this on, but I expected Brandon to hit a home run and he has.
