it took me 3 whole boks to "get into" the Malazan series, but it was worth it. It was not bad, like Neil Gaiman was for me, so sticking with it was not a difficult choice. Just..  some stuff does not make sense until teh 3rd or 4th book.

Auberon, Ex oblivione

Metal is the *******!  ;D

I agree. I have Slayer's newest album on repeat in my car right now. (not right now, but, you know) and often attend local shows with bands like Acerose, Acaro and Foreshadow the Fall and a new band which is wicked oldschool Reborn a Weapon

I read all 9 books, and while it  may have, in some instances, been done tastefully, I thought there was far more than most books, and it was often, in my opinion, completely unnecessary.

Fair warning, if you can't tolerate rape and incest in the context of fiction, don't read Donaldson.  It's not gratuitous, but it is impossible to avoid.

the same could be said about the entire Malazan series, violent rape, prostitution, pedophilia, incest are all quite rampant throghout the novels, some of it done by "hero" styled charachters, as well.

Just finished Guns of the South, not sure what I am up for next, a series or a stand-alone? hmmm need to think about that, it is not like I have a whole lot of time these days, but I will coming up....

I gotta ask...  is songs of Fire and Ice worth starting?

I actually think Miranda Cosgrove is a very good actress. Just too....  peppy.... I think the look is about right though and she will learn everything else. The real trick is finding a girl who looks 15 to play the part.

I think Viggo Mortensen is too...  "thick" ...  - in my mind Kelsier is kind of a dandy type character. Think Dick van Dyke from Mary Poppins.

i love Firefly as much as the next scifi fanboy, but really, Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau are not right for every part! LOL

However: Sean Maher (aka Dr. Simon Tam) is Kelsier in my opinion (not the Lord ruler): http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0536883/

Miranda Cosgrove could be a good Vin once her hair was chopped. (yes, she is iCarly and was the little sister on Drake and Josh) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1388927/

Lord Ruler, imho, could be none other than James Callis: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0130536/

the first 2 books of this series I found to be especially difficult to read. It took me until the middle of teh 3rd book before I really grasped what was going on and the characters. I like the story, I like the books and it was interesting the whole time, if you didnt try to understand it too much right away.

saw the preview for Game of Thrones and it looks interesting, was that part of Fire and Ice? I decided not to read that series because it is not finished and some of the blogs have not given me hope that it would ever be finished.

Reading Excuses / Re: A couple of notes on formatting
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:52:40 AM »
this was an interesting conversation and I really dont know anything about your submissions or whatever, just wanted to chime in here:

RTF is "rich text format" and is a Microsoft proprietary standard. Many text editors can read it, but not all of them. It is especially difficult on people who use Macs or Unix based systems (like Linux). Also, some internet servers still dont "understand" it and garble it. even when I worked for Microsoft, I recommended against RTF and I am going to do so again.

also, for those who are using Office 2007, keep in mind that the default save setting is DOCX format, which can only be read by those using Office 2007 or older versions of Office with a 2007 converter. WordPad and other simple Document readers will not be able to open them.

Captain Mal: You wanna run this ship?
Jayne: YES!
Captain Mal: Well...      you cant.

the movie was just superb, they killed main characters and it was as realistic as you can get for a space cowboy movie.

Nathan Fillion has a special place reserved in my fandom just for him because of Firefly. Very few actors or actresses can say that ;)
I will watch nearly anything he is in. Including those horrible episodes of Desperate Housewives. and Castle is now one of my favorite shows.

Im struggling through the elric saga. getting near the end of book 6 and I have to say, the story is rather weak, it has kept me mildly entertained but it jumps around too much and the magic system is barely explained. How did this series make it onto a "Top 100" sci-fi/fantasy book list? It isnt the worst I have read, even this year, but I couldnt justify putting it on the same list as the likes of Tolkein, Jordan and Eddings....

but then again, this is where I got the list..

http://home.austarnet.com.au/petersykes/fantasy100/lists_books.html

And you can plainly see the person compiling the list deigned to include Twilight and Eragon, both pretty darn high up too.

So.... I am almost finished with Elric and probably going to start George RR Martins Song of Fire and Ice set...
