Brandon Sanderson / Re: Favorite Authors...Where does Brandon Rate?
« on: July 25, 2009, 07:07:14 PM »
These lists are very Brandon-topheavy, but...what else should I expect, in the Brandon Sanderson forum?

It's hard to not like a guy who writes this well, works as hard as he does, AND manages to remain a part of his community of readers while pulling 16 hour workdays trying to meet an insane deadline for WoT.

I'm having an extremely difficult time making a list... My memory is horrible, so I'd have to reread all of these authors again (which I usually do in cycles of two years) to make a definitive one:

1. Brandon Sanderson: I addressed this above. I also have genuinely enjoyed every published book I've read so far to the point of losing sleep just to finish them.
2. Terry Brooks: I think I've seen posts on here bashing his work to a fair extent so I don't think he's much popular here, but he was (besides The Phantom Tollbooth, which I read no less than 30 times in 2nd grade) my introduction to the fantasy realm. Yes, The Sword of Shannara completely ripped off LotR, but the rest of the series is all him. Word/Void also probably is one of my favorite series ever.
3. Orson Scott Card: Speaker For The Dead. I don't think I need to say anything after those 4 words.
4. J.K. Rowling: I know, I know... typical answer, blah blah. But seriously, her writing ability improved immensely with each book released. And I've read the books so many times that I'm doubting I'll ever be emotionally connected to characters like these again.
5. Robert Jordan: He would undoubtedly be higher on the list if my attention span/memory allowed me to enjoy his super long descriptions of how an attractive woman's dress makes her breasts look perfectly round.

EDIT: This is not to say I don't enjoy the books. Note that while he is last on my list, that's only 5 names.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Vin Twittering

I actually had the same thoughts when I read that part, too. But as for Lightsong twittering in the voice of Spook... isn't he too lazy for that?

The problem with bending the bullets trajectory is that if its fired directly at the Mistborn, they can only push it back in the direction it came from. I think it would take mad quick skills with Atium to make any difference at all.

Perhaps he thinks that Vin finding a way to defeat TLR and Elend's... change at the end of WoA to be miracles. I don't think this is the case, but I can see how they would be mistaken as such.

I always thought gates were "one way" - as in, the point of origin was the beginning and the destination point you could not enter

Rand kept a gate open that a a certain person created, and went back through it later. That was in book... I don't know, 5 or 6. I think.

I'm currently on Path of Daggers in my latest read-through, and I randomly thought of something the other day. Maybe it was answered somewhere in the books and I just don't remember, but what would happen if a gateway was opened into the ocean, or other body of water? Would water start pouring through it? I think that could be an interesting way to throw off attackers... just wash them away.

Alcatraz versus The Scrivener's Bones. Which is Book two, the first being Alcatraz versus The Evil Librarians.

I also loved the Sppok-talk. I actually laughed out loud, and my coworker, who I got to read Mistborn, pretty much thought I was crazy.

I have no idea what it does... but I think sepressing his powers isn't the answer. It doesn't seem to fit with the theme of every other lens in the series.

Well... I am by no means a writer. Even years of school haven't helped me to be able to string a paragraph together correctly, so all I can really gather, off the top of my head, is to go for what is required for the benefit of the story, not shock value or cliches (although, one can argue that shock value IS a cliche.)

This is particularly eveident with the characters killed off in Mistborn... As much as I wanted to scream and yell *obviously a spoiler ahead* at EUOL for axing Kelsier and Vin... it was for the purpose of furthering, or completing the story, not so much because the characters "served their purpose".

I think that because theyaren't constantly burning them it wouldn't make a difference. And really, how often do they burn Zinc? Iron maybe, but there is plenty of time to recover.

She does have the ability to use them... but maybe the metal just hasn't been discovered yet.

Yes... but if you're specifically asking about finding the atium stash, that gets explained in HOA. I can't think of another time that it was neccessary to find a stash, as far as the storyline is concerned.

I have absolutely zero complaints about WOA. Minus the highlights, I think I enjoy it more than HOA. It was more character driven and the political aspect of it was handled smoothly so I was never bored.

Hmm... okay, I wasn't crazy about Zane, but I did have a lot of sympathy for him, especially after I learned what the Spike meant.

I completely love the entire trilogy, but Final Empire probably sits as my favorite. This one was just more fun for me to read. Vin pretending to be nobility, Kelsier's crazy antics, espionage at the stuck up balls... and not to mention I think Luthendel (did I spell that right at all?) would have been completely awesome to explore as a newly snapped Mistborn pre-Fall of TLR. I think I enjoyed the settings more overall.

But basing it on battle scenes... The climactic battles with Vin at the end of the latter two books were nothing short of... well, awesome.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: On the essence of Mistborn.

I'm having a big problem with this because I only have one bookshelf. Top shelf is currently Terry Brooks, second shelf is Orson Scott Card and Robert Jordan, and the bottom is classified as "other". And thusly, I haven't even really put my Sanderson books in there yet. Waiting on getting a new shelf to work with.

But in the more strict sense of the question, all I really have is fantasy/sci-fi, hence the alphabitzed order. Trying to arrange them by type would be confusing since Alcatraz would be over here, and Mistborn would be over there.

Hmm, cool. Oh well, I see it as a good thing. I was considering picking up versus The Librarians, and when I saw both together I was instantly convinced.

Brandon Sanderson / Alcatraz 2 out already?

I would jsut skim the posts in the forum, but I've been busy and haven't finished HOA ages yet and I don't want spoilers.

But anyway, the release dates I've seen for it are all November 1st... but I found the book earlier this week at BN.
