Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn on Top 100 SFF novels of All Time!
« on: August 18, 2011, 06:22:28 PM »
No offense to Mr. Sanderson, but I don't think anything he's written so far deserves to be on that list. I also think they should take Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles off it too.  :-\

Speaking of consequences, does anyone really believe that three women sharing one man ever really works as well as RJ imagined?

*Spoiler Alert*

I think Rand is supposed to in the end, anyway. If that happened they wouldn't all be living in the same house and whatnot. I suppose that was RJ's entire point with Rand. He's going to die, so . . . why not? What could three people do to him that he isn't already going to endure? (Note: I'm not saying I approve.)

Supposed to what?  Suffer consequences?

Typo. I meant to say "I think that Rand will die anyway in the end."

But...Lloyd Alexander is brilliant. Eddings doesn't hold a candle to him; I wouldn't mention them in the same breath.

Agreed. Eddings always came off as racist to me.

I'm a WoT fan, but I agree with you about the "hazing", and I think this issue doesn't get the criticism it deserves in WoT fandom. (Discussion of gender tends to drown out all other issues.) The story glorifies every form of hazing. Somewhere in the background, there's the idea that taking hazing too far "breaks" people and is wrong, but that's only a fig leaf, or disclaimer. There's just a ridiculous amount of hazing in WoT, it never traumatizes anyone, and only makes people stronger.

As someone who grew up in foster care and have been around a number of different kids who have been abused, I’ve come to the conclusion that those that are traumatized are typically the kids who were passive to begin with. Also, I would recommend you read On Killing by Lt. David Grossman. He has a whole section on the psychology of both the torturer and the one being tortured. More often than not it is the torturer who suffers from long term trauma. Plus, I think it should be added that most of the time in tWoT the hazing isn't done with malicious intent.

I don't understand why people keep saying that TWoK is slow to start.  I was transfixed from page 1.  There were times that I'd have to stop and read the same paragraph four or five times because his prose was so beautiful.  I had to stop myself from tearing out the page and framing it.

It starts out very fast, and then we skip to Kaladin moping in a wagon. It isn't that the opening is slow, even those who are don't like it generally agree that it starts fast, but their complaint is that the story slows waaayyy down after the first 40 pages.

What am I reading? Well, I can't tell any of you.  8) It's not on shelves yet, and might not be until mid fall, and from an excellent author whom most of you have probably never heard of before. If I sound smug, it's because I am.  :P Anyway, after I'm finished with it I'll write a review and ask the author if it's okay if I post it here. Okay, gloating done.  ;D

Max, my daughter LOVES the animorph books. She's only recently discovered them.

Oh man, in the 90's they were just IT. I was obsessed with them. I still enjoy them but I don't have to wait anxiously a month until the next one comes out. Reading the re-releases makes me feel pretty nostalgic, which makes me feel a lot older than I really am. Uh, I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad.  :-\

A childhood favorite, finally re-released after fifteen years. Have you ever waited fifteen years for a book?!

Finished off the Hunger Games Trilogy yesterday.  I didn't really intend to, but after the second I had to know how everything turned out.

If you liked Hunger Games and Mazerunner you should try Gone by Michael Grant. I'll caution you that it gets pretty disturbing.

Regardless of the type of comic, I always wait until the graphic novel comes out.

I saw the title of this post and thought it was going to have an unforgettable question.  And I don't mean to critique the question that was asked, which was pretty good and earned an answer, but it was certainly not unforgettable.

It was a question about Eric's serial novel titled Unforgettable. You can read it here: http://www.ericjamesstone.com/blog/2011/04/05/unforgettable-cover-teaser/

Just read your second chapter, and I have to say that this is pretty awesome. I like the balance of humor and suspense that keeps the story light and fun but still exciting. Honestly, even if it is a bit shorter than the average novel, I can’t imagine why a publishing house would at least give it a serious look.
