Brandon Sanderson / Re: I want info about Goodkind/Brandon's comments
« on: February 11, 2008, 02:02:52 PM »
I have to say I had absolutely no idea what an ass Goodkind was. Shocking! Having said that though it doesn't take away from the words in his books. Very few people can write an action scene like Goodkind does. Kahlan is also one of my favorite female characters ever.  Books 1,2 and 6 are absolutely fantastic in my opinion. Books 6 has an unbelievable climax when he reveals what he's created and sways one of the main antagonists in the story to Richard's way of thinking. So powerful I got goosebumps all over. Also the scene when Kahlan performs the actions needed to gain Richard entrance to the Temple of the Winds is so revolting that it was hard to read, but it led to a great climax (pun not intended) as well.

It may not take away from what he's already written, but I may not be able to pick up his future books after having read that interview and some other distasteful stuff I've found on the internet.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn 3 Cover (Slight Spoilers for Mistborn 2)

It's nice I guess, but I have to say I'm almost always disappointed with fantasy covers. I wish sombody with Royo's skill would step up...

I couldn't even get through Shaman's Crosssing. I guess that goes to show the.... everyone likes different books for different reasons.
You couldn't get through it because it sucks :P Read some of the earlier stuff.

I'm stunned that someone didn't like GRRM's work. I'd be hard pressed to find better fantasy. I've read... well a lot, and I have to say that A Song of Ice and Fire is the most wellcrafted epic fantasy ever written.

As to something you would probably like (to original poster): I think Terry Goodkind's "Wizard's First Rule" would be to your liking. Fast paced, very tight, great characters. Books 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 are wonderful in my opinion. The series is called "Sword of Truth".

.....I dont think it would remove the ability to burn metals because thats what alluminium does and as i said earlier i believe that this metal will have an external  effect......
Aluminum doesn't remove the ability to burn metals, it only consumes the metal reservoir the person currently is in possession of :) I believe the other poster meant that burning this metal would bereave the person of the ability to burn metals forever.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Warbreaker: Free Ebook
« on: February 11, 2008, 06:07:32 AM »
First off, I'd like to apologize for any spellingmistakes or "weirdness" in my post. I understand the english language, but I do not possess any skill when it comes to actually using it myself :) 6am and I still haven't slept, that could also be a factor!

Amazing read Mr. Sanderson; I really enjoyed it. I should say straight away that I haven't read the earlier versions of "Warbreaker" so I have nothing to compare with... having said that though, I must say that it was an impressive read, especially to be a draft.. A few things that struck me during the story - things that you may disagree with or things you have intentionally left as they are - but here they are:

  • I really wished for a discription of the protagonists' faces. I realize that the point is for the readers to create images that they themselves find pleasing, but as a reader I really want some kind of input from the Creator of the story. It needn't be more than a mention of Siri's eyecolor or Blushweaver's high cheekbones and small dignified nose. It's not necessary for the smaller characters, but personally I would've liked a couple of the main characters to have some more discription (but I may be weird). Siri turned out quite beautiful inside my head, but some parts of her face was blurred...
  • Some scenes were extraordinarily exciting:
I loved the part where Vivenna stumbled upon  Parlin's body and realized that the mercenaries weren't her friends afterall. I would've liked a bigger shock factor though, because even though I was left with great satisfaction after reading it, I felt the effect could've been stronger had there been greater shock. I don't know if you've read Terry Goodkind's books (some look upon his work unfavorably***), but the effect I mean is when Kahlan is forced to give oral stimulation to another man than her husband so that he may gain entry to the Temple of Winds, but then the lighting flashes and you see the color of Richard's (her husband's) eyes in the flash. I felt my whole body growing cold in that instance.   [**and now I do as well having read another post here on the forum that linked to an interview where he said some very distasteful things..]

  • A frustrating thing about the Mistborn series, for me personally, was the lack of natural intimacy between Vin and her Husband. It was puzzling, even when taking into account Vin's personality problems (selfdoubt etc). This was much better in Warbreaker. Siri's and Suse's relationship as it slowly increased in potency was beautifully written. I would perhaps enjoy just a tad more focus on it though.
  • Now this one is probably just me. I would absolutely love a longer epilogue; I liked it the way it was, but one from Siri's viewpoint would be fantastic. The ending as a whole felt slightly rushed in my honest opinion. I wish the part when Vasher revealed himself and onwards could be more fleshed out. A shockfactor would be great as well, and a reaction from the people in the room (a big one:P ) .
You're a fantastic author, and I hope you continue writing (preferrably in this genre) for decades to come. What a wonderful imagination! The pacing was great; all the characters were fantastic, the story was engaging and nothing was clichè. The magic system was innovative and fun (and had great negative consequences in some cases). I sincerely believe you are the absolute best in creating magical systems in your books. The humor was laugh-out-loud great. Thank you for the opportunity of allowing us to read this, I will definately buy the finished product and continue buying your books. I can see from the quality of your work that you won't disappoint. Sad that I, along with so many others, had to discover you through a tragedy. Life goes on however...[/size]

Books / Re: How has your views on WoT characters changed over the years?
« on: February 08, 2008, 04:48:34 AM »
<rant>
When Elayne started pouting because Rand had reclaimed Andor for her, I was seriously tempted to burn the book. My glass was suddenly overflowing from all the whining these women do. Try being thankful for Light's sake! I know it possibly isn't supposed to fit her personality, but at some point you gotta think: "Hmmm.. He really cares for me, and he risked his life to secure something I need\love", right?
</endrant>

Having said that, I really love most of the female characters in the books (most of the time). Avi is great, and Min is my favorite female character (because of the comfort\healing she brings Rand). Nyn is great, gotta hate the braidpulling, gotta love the way she acts around Lan and the way she cares for the "kids".

Rand - From just having a simple love for the character in the beginning, to the immense pity I feel for him as he sinks deeper into madness, his mistreatment by the black sisters and the horror I felt when he had his hand blown off.
Nyn - Went from hatred to love on that one.
Lan - Haven't really changed my view at all.. The guy's a mountain. He never changes (or veeery slowly) and that's what I like about him).
Mat - from laughing at him, to respecting him (although he still is a fun character)

I need to re-read the series; it's been years since a complete readthrough for me now.

ps. Don't judge me by my english please, I'm not from an english speaking country :) [and it's 4.39 am (if am is very early in the morning)]

Brandon Sanderson / Re: torrent!
« on: February 08, 2008, 03:45:47 AM »
I would like to state "for the record" that I'm against filesharing. I can however admit that I'm not certain that filesharing can in some few cases help in some degree or another. One thing I read on a website a month or so ago was fairly interesting. I actually had to laugh and shake my head incredulously (is that right? I'm Norwegian) when I read through the letter. Here it is:
------------------
I received a very pleasant mail today. My inbox is usually full of stupid cease & desist messages from various antipiracy organizations, but it’s mails like this one which make you happy. It’s good to see that some people realize that internet piracy isn’t just evil…
(I won't mention which site this is from, because I fear the wrath of the moderators :)   -rtm1981)

    To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Eric D. Wilkinson and I am the producer of a small independent film called “Jerome Bixby’s The Man From Earth” (our review)[supposed to be a link. -rtm1981].

I am sending you this email after realizing that our website has had nearly 23,000 hits in the last 12 days, much of it coming from your website. In addition, our trailer, both on the www.manfromearth.com site and other sites like YouTube, MySpace and AOL has been watched nearly 20,000 times AND what’s most impressive is our ranking on IMDb went from being the 11,235th most popular movie, to the 5th most popular movie in 2 weeks (we are also the #1 independent film on IMDb & the #1 science fiction film on IMDb). How did this all happen? Two words: Torrent / File Sharing sites (well, four words and a slash).

More specifically, XXXXXX.net [Apologies. -rtm1981]. Our independent movie had next to no advertising budget and very little going for it until somebody ripped one of the DVD screeners and put the movie online for all to download. After that happened, people were watching it and started posting mostly all positive reviews on IMDb, Amazon and other places. Most of the feedback from everyone who has downloaded “The Man From Earth” has been overwhelmingly positive. People like our movie and are talking about it, all thanks to piracy on the net!

Am I upset… surprisingly no. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded this torrrent and watched the film, our awareness level is through the roof. For that I say, “THANK YOU”!

What you guys have done here is nothing short of amazing. In the future, I will not complain about file sharing. YOU HAVE HELPED PUT THIS LITTLE MOVIE ON THE MAP!!!! When I make my next picture, I just may upload the movie on the net myself!

This guy really deserves support from the file sharing community! You can support producers of The Man From Earth by buying the retail DVD, which should be available in the US stores from tomorrow.
 -Admin of XXXXXX.net

I found the letter quite entertaining. The producer of a movie actually wrote a filesharing site (a HUGE one btw) and thanked the filesharing community :) Apparantly lots of people shared my humourous reaction, because this was definately the biggest source of debate on a geekforum I frequent...
