Everything Else / Death to the Grammer Police!
« on: August 23, 2008, 04:27:28 AM »
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26351328/?GT1=43001

The grammer police have now gone too far. I think the prosecutor should appeal the sentence so that they get life in prison or even death for trying to correct such an engraven error. Okay, the death penalty may be too much, but probation and a $3,035 fee seems a little light. For all of use who struggle with grammer, it's about time those self-righteous people who correct everyone's grammer got punished.

Everything Else / Names?
« on: June 20, 2007, 05:20:08 AM »
I know that several of people on this site are good at coming up with names. What I need is a good, masculine name. No, it not for some imaginary character is some story that I'm writing. The fact is, my wife and I are expecting are third son at the end of September. We've been trying to think of a good name and after eliminating all of the names in several baby books, we just don't know what to do. Therefore, I'm open to suggestions.

Part of the problem is that I want this son to have a unique name. I refuse to give him a name that is the same name as one of my relatives.  Considering that I come from a large, male dominated family, this eliminates many names and most of the common ones.  Also, my wife is relunctant to consider names that begin with C, K, I, or L. My oldest son continues to suggest names from cartoons that he watches, but unless he is born with a big blue arrow on his head, I'm really not considering these suggestions.

So, any suggestions?

Everything Else / Marriage-A Luxury Item
« on: March 04, 2007, 08:00:01 PM »
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17445891/

I read this article today and I find it very disturbing that it is calling me elitest and abnormal because I'm married with kids. So why is it that so many people that I associate with believe that getting married and having children is the norm, when the demographic data suggest that it is only a small minority in today society (less than 1/4 of US Household)?

I will agree that people who are married tend to be better educated and wealthier (at least I can't dispute it).

Everything Else / Study shows that TWG is Good For You.

I really like what I've read from Sylvia Ann Hewlett. She is a bright economist and I find her work on work brings some perspective to my work.  Anyways, if anyone mentions that I'm not working enough, I now have a referrence to show that my time-wasting has possitive benefits.

Okay, this is a very short trailer for The Order of the Phoenix, but I guess it means that they are still working on it.

Everything Else / How bad is your driving?

I though this was an interesting list because it seems to me that everyone seems to think that the drivers were they live are the worse. Well, thanks to statistics, we can at least have an idea of whose lives among the worse drivers. E and Jeffe, I'm starting to worry about your safety.

Everything Else / Viewpoint Diversity in Academia

Interesting article. My initial thoughts are that when I was at BYU, viewpoint diversity was heavily discussed in many of my classes (an encourage but not easily observed). When I was at the University of Wisconsin, viewpoint diversity was generally dismissed by most of the facilty and students that I knew (of course, very few students or facilty at the University of Wisconsin would every admit to having conservative views).

Everything Else / New Geek Mutation.

I'm not sure if this is a new species of geek like this article claims or merely a result of the economic demand for more multi-disciplinary individuals.

Everything Else / The Rewards of Higher Education

I wonder what all my college degrees will get me? Maybe I'll be a used car salesman.

Writing Group / How to get writing ideas.
« on: March 29, 2006, 07:51:15 PM »
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12061682/

I think this college student's methods are less effective but the article does give some idea of how boring Des Moines, Iowa is. Also, he did get a measure of publicity from this stunt (I just question whether he got any story ideas).

Rants and Stuff / Teaching Geography by comparing Bush to Hitler.
« on: March 08, 2006, 10:32:27 PM »
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11667344/

As it may be, I happen to live in this school district and this teacher is at the local high school (which my kids would go too if they were old enough).

I know when I was a TA teaching politcal science, all the TAs were told to avoid making such comments. What I don't like about this is it illustrates problems in the US education system. Why is this teacher giving his political views instead of teaching geography, which he is suppose to be doing? And how is he teaching critical thinking?

I don't think this is a free speech issue as much as an education issue. Teachers shouldn't be using the class room as a pulpit.

Movies and TV / Why Lawyers don't watch "Law & Order" or "CSI"
« on: March 08, 2006, 07:36:11 PM »
http://www.denbar.org/docket/doc_articles.cfm?ArticleID=4523

Being a lawyer, I have to agree with this article. I know many lawyers have complained about those shows, even though I use to have an evidence professor in law school who actual wrote scripts for Law & Order.

I think this article does a good job trying to explain to nonlawyers why such shows are not usually entertaining to lawyers (or maybe it was just to make fun of them). To bad it was published by the DBA, so I dediced to post it here in hopes that some nonlawyers would read it.

Everything Else / Is there anything good about Northern Virginia?
« on: December 10, 2005, 11:34:22 PM »
I know that this might hit close to home for some people but what is good about Northern Virginia?

I'm actually posting this to find out about Northern Virginia because I have an job interview in McLean, VA on Thursday. A "Big 4" accounting firm is paying for me to fly out to Virginia this week and I want to know what people think of Virginia as a place to live. My wife is from Maryland, so she has her own opinion. I figure that I will have a better shot of getting the job if I knew a little more about VA. Does anyone have any useful information?

There is a topic for happy things and for grumpy things but what about those things that are neither happy nor grumpy or things that are both happy and grumpy at the same time?
