CCGs / Multiplayer Play Decisioning: An Example
« on: January 16, 2006, 12:58:52 PM »
Last night we played a large, 6-person game of Magic, and I think a generally good time was had by all in attendance. As we were leaving, I made a comment to EUOL about how I had removed one of the players from play, as he had been engaged in a different game at the time, and I received a comment back from another source that it was mean of me to do this to a less experienced player. (Names being omitted in part because I don't know the correct TWG IDs for all involved.) While I didn't think the comment was serious at all, I didn't like the suggestion that I had done something mean, and commented back that I could have killed the individual making the statement much earlier in the game. I hadn't wanted to end the conversation then, but it was late and people were departing, and that was where the conversation ended.

I'll admit, the comment sounded bad, and it could easily be taken as me toying with people throughout the game. What I wished I could have added at the time was why, although I could have taken that person out of the game earlier, I didn't. I couldn't really. Fortunately, the experience also makes for a good point about playing Magic: The Gathering in multiplayer.

In the first few draws of the game, I got sufficient tools to build my mana base (playing a 5-color deck, I had to keep the hand) and a number of instants. That wasn't the best hand I could have imagined, but I played through it. I never did get many permanents out on the table, but I held onto three different cards throughout the vast bulk of the game: Darigaaz's Charm, Blinding Beam, and Consume Strength. I managed to get plenty of land in play, but ended up being able to put little other than land and a bare minimum of blockers in play the entire game long. The one card that most kept me going was a single Aven Redeemer.

Considering the person to whom I had commented that I could have killed them much earlier, the statement was correct as they fell to less than three life some time before they died to a player other than myself and Darigaaz's Charm could have killed them at any point thereafter. The point I was trying to make was also correct...that I hadn't been trying to pick on less experienced players. The truth was that I fully couldn't afford to use the card to do so, and I wasn't playing anyone for fools.

Three other players were on the board, I had an inferior field position, and a subpar life total. My only hope of remaining in the game was to rely on my combat instants to respond to attacks, and only when I couldn't afford to not use them. I took quite a drubbing over the course of the game while waiting for the right moment to use those cards. While some people mentioned during the match that I was trying to look weak and building up, nearly the opposite was the case: I *was* weak, I was holding onto everything I could get my hands on to survive, and I was just hoping to draw something to let me get into the game. In the end I did draw Treva, the Renewer and came back to win the game, so I can't say that their assessment of what could happen was incorrect, only that I wasn't pretending to be weak.

What can be learned from the situation?

1. Versatile combat instants are powerful, but only when used correctly. At various points in the game, I was facing the possibility of being struck by a threat that I would have to expend one of my combat instants to fend off. Saving Consume Strength to kill an Undead Warchief to debuff a zombie army at instant speed or to allow my Aven Redeemer to pull a trade out of a battle with a buffed Boros Swiftblade were two examples. Had those theats been played against me, it would have forced me to play my hand sooner. In the end, I used Consume Strength to kill a flier and allow Treva to win me the game. Conversely, the Tribal Flames I used to kill a player after they attacked me with a monstrous rat was a Sorcery, and after it became apparent that I couldn't afford to face down the same threat a second time, I had to act proactively to remove them from the game.

2. Reading hand size and board position can tell you the opponent's hand. I sat through most of the game with at least 4 cards in hand on top of a mountain of mana, and I had color versatility. I also kept three mana open as often as I possibly could. While the exact nature of my hand was secret, of course, that information could be read easily enough to show that I had cards in my hand that were better there than aiding my inferior board position, and that I needed at least three mana to use them. A cautious attack strategy against me that didn't expose gaps in a player's defense, but that exceeded the strength of my board position could have been used to draw out my secrets.

Everything Else / Moving from Provo
« on: July 19, 2005, 02:27:32 PM »
I've been away for a while, partially busy hacking up undead on World of Warcraft and otherwise engaged with figuring out my new job and housing situation. I got a new job up in Sandy a while ago, and I've finally locked down housing in a place on the Sandy/Midvale border.

If things go as planned, I'll be moving this Saturday, on July 19th. Fortunately I don't have all that much to move, so it shouldn't be too hard, but I do have a few items that could cause some trouble. In particular, I have one big wooden computer desk, and a smaller desk that wouldn't fit in my car.

42 suggested getting a U-HAUL truck on a cheap 1-day service term or something like that on the idea that I'd have enough room for everything in one trip. Any other suggestions (or a little help) would be great. I'll post any changes or updates to the move time as information comes in.

Video Games / WoW: Stitches in Goldshire
« on: December 14, 2004, 07:41:42 PM »
I found this posting in the World of Warcraft forums. To make the story short for those who haven't played the game to this point, Goldshire is a town for very low-level people and Stitches is a very, very, bad man. Cut and pasted the thing since linking it didn't work:

Today, Stitches attacked Goldshire. Here's how it went down.

Gumble and I had just finished most of the quests in Darkshire, when we decided to see how far we could train Stitches. On the first attempt, we got him half way through Westfall (Gumble did the pulling/kiting/training/whatever), but then he stopped moving, got bugged, and eventually respawned in Darkshire. A couple hours later, we decided to see if we could take him around Darkshire, through Redridge, then into Elwynn and to Goldshire. Gumble pulled and pulled and pulled..

Did it work? You bet. We got Stitches ALL the way to Goldshire, where hilarity ensued. And boy, did it ensue.

When we first arrived in Elwynn, I announced in general that an abomination was attacking Elwynn! No one really believed me, but a few people did see him on the road.

We arrive in Goldshire! Suddenly, people realize there's an Abomination about. Now, Stitches, being level 35 elite, can take down the Elwynn guards like cake. Hilarity began to ensue on TeamSpeak at this point, seeing as how he finally arrived in town.

We took him into the inn, first and fore most, because, you know, it'd be funny :)

Suddenly, more and more lowbies started showing up. What great fun, watching people franticly zerg Stitches, as he slaughters most in one attack

I myself died a few times, trying to pull him into the inn :(

More and more Alliance gathered to fight for the common good, it was really quite inspiring.

Slowly, they started taking his HP down. Somewhere in the mass of alliance, people got the idea to pull him to Stormwind and get Marcus Jonathan to destroy Stitches. My guildie and I would see no part in that, and repeatedly pulled him back to Goldshire, to enjoy the event as long as it would last.

Minutes later, Stitches was getting low on health, as even more Alliance arrived to banish the creature (hey, he was just trying to make some friends =()

Finally, Stitches was completely and totally surrounded. We all knew the end was near, and indeed, it was

=( Poor Stitches. The lowbies danced around his corpse, as the task was complete. Little did most know that Stitches would spawn many times a day in Darkshire.

Alas, the aftermath was enjoyable. Skeletons EVERYWHERE.

I hope to have brought much joy and excitement to the lowbies that participated (and the higher levels that came to aid the slaughter). My guild and I hope everyone who participated enjoyed it, and you enjoyed reading this write up :)

***VIDEO***

I cut out some two minutes of footage, as it was overly redundant (raw gameplay footage).

As for the music, well, myself and Gumble thought it would be very fitting :)

Download it here (about 22mb):

I found this in the World of Warcraft forums. Whether or not you think this should have happened, ect. it looks like most of the participation was willing, and it is rather hilarious.

CCGs / Kamigawa
« on: August 07, 2004, 06:39:01 PM »
Well I finally saw an article with some real information about the upcoming Kamigawa block:

http://www.mtgnews.com/F/Topic/1091786138979_Comprehensive_Kamigawa_Block_Informa.html

So far it's looking good to me. Aside from the more average plains, the basic land art looks really good, and I think the flavor of the whole thing is very neat. It looks like despite the japanese flavor-theme they're not going to go heavily into Samurai and Ninjas, which is probably a good thing. (although I'd prefer new creature types like Samurai over the Mirrodin-introduced Archer.)

As for actual information about the mechanics of the block, there isn't much yet, of course. 'Something special' for the kami creatures doesn't explain much. I was interested to hear about the potential for a higher rate of Legends, something we haven't seen since Invasion.

I could personally do without the rabbitfolk, and if elves can take a vacation, I wish goblins would as well, but that's just me...

Everything Else / Anime Night
« on: July 23, 2004, 01:22:30 PM »
I was chatting with EUOL recently, and I brought up the subject of having an anime night again. (It *has* been a while). He liked the idea, so I'm bringing it to the boards to see if anyone else is interested.

I'd be up for a few different anime shows, but the one I started out wanting to share was something my little brother found a while ago, Rah Xephon. I hadn't ever heard of it before, but everyone that's actually taken the time to sit down and watch it (42 says he doesn't like that type of show (whatever that means (I'm a programmer, I can nest parenthesis whenever I want))) and Spriggan says the parts he's seen look weird) have really enjoyed the series so far. I've got about 4 DVDs, although of course we don't have to watch them all. Fair warning though, Spriggan isn't entirely wrong. Rah Xephon feels a lot like Evangelion at times (not that weird but similar in flavor) and I don't recommend watching it unless you can sit down for at least the first three episodes...more preferably the whole five on the first DVD.

So that's what I'd want to show people. As I said before, I'd be interested to see what other people would be bringing to share as well. If need be, we can also schedule it a ways off to allow people outside of the immediate vicinity (like Fell, y'know) to participate. Probably sometime in August.

CCGs / Official MTG Multiplayer Rules
« on: July 12, 2004, 06:57:00 PM »
A bright day for lovers of Multiplayer Magic.

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/feature/220

I looked over the proposed draft of the new rules, and I have some concerns, but even if those concerns aren't ironed out, it's still a really good thing. Hopefully this will mean that we'll be getting a small segment of solid multiplayer cards in each expansion, and Champions isn't too soon to start.

CCGs / Ninth Edition Voting
« on: June 11, 2004, 06:35:54 PM »
The short version is that starting Monday, Wizards will be allowing the players to vote on selections of cards, art, and flavor text for Ninth Edition. The long version is here:

I'm sure we'll find things to talk about.

Role-Playing Games / D&D PrCs
« on: May 26, 2004, 12:14:28 PM »
The main intent I have for this thread is to allow us to share notes about cool PrCs we've found for D&D (and other games too, I guess) on the web or elsewhere. As to the one that got me excited enough to post this...

I downloaded the new web supplement on Wizard's site for Complete Divine, and found a Moon Guardian PrC there that looks really cool. I've always disliked the Monster Manual rules for Lycanthropes that played hackey-sack with your alignment. (as playing a werewolf would be really cool, but switching to Chaotic Evil (usually) sucks)

This PrC, however, allows you to be a werewolf without changing alignment. I also like the fact that it takes class levels to do so, since spending effort on mastering the beast within is kudos for roleplaying material. Very cool.

The doc is found here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20040522a

I have reservations about the requirements (should only lvl 5+ divine casters be able to pray for deliverance from alignment change and be heard?) but the class creators also put in notes that almost encourage the DM to modify the reqs to whatever is necessary.

My take on handling the situation as a DM? First, make the PC a werewolf, full out. Start stripping class levels to make room for Werewolf HD and level adjustments (there should be a penalty for this, after all, but be careful not to tick off the player) and use Savage progression material if they don't have enough levels to manage that or aren't willing to sacrifice them. The requirements for the Moon Guardian should be entirely based on roleplaying, in my opinion. Let them struggle with the lycanthropy for a little while, and if they still haven't succumbed to the beast on their next level up, let them move into Moon Guardian.

Once there, if they have divine spellcasting levels already, great. The class works. If not, I'd count the even-level caster level increases as Druid spellcaster levels, as that works best with the theme. (Unless, of course they have a nature god for a patron diety, and then they could take Cleric spellcaster levels.)

Oh, and Knowledge(nature), possibly even Knowledge(Dungeoneering) should be on the class list. It doesn't feel quite like a perfectly-made PrC, but on the whole, I think it's very cool.

CCGs / Card Quiz
« on: May 18, 2004, 10:04:18 AM »
Alright, I ran into an issue that searchable spoilers won't help me with, finally. Does anyone know the name of the card that originally was responsible for applying the name 'Tim' to creatures that deal 1 damage to target creature or player?

CCGs / Fifth Dawn
« on: May 07, 2004, 10:15:50 AM »
The Fifth Dawn Prerelease is coming up on May 22nd. They've already started the card previews on magicthegathering.com as well, and some of the new cards look pretty neat.

Anyway, just wanted to announce it. I'll be going...is anyone else hoping to come?

CCGs / Unhinged
« on: April 08, 2004, 01:12:48 AM »
It's a little too early to get excited about it, but it turns out that the April Fool's joke Wizards of the Coast played on us on April 1st isn't actually a joke. They wrote a second article here:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/feature/206

Detailing that they really do intend to release a sequel to Unglued in about seven months. Tricky little devils.

For anyone who doesn't know and still cares, Unglued was a decidedly nonconformist expansion of Magic: the Gathering that focused on breaking the game's own rules. It should be quite the ride when we get a chance to see the new Un-expansion.

Everything Else / Open Debate
« on: February 19, 2004, 06:41:22 PM »
Leisurely watching C-Span today (no there wasn't anything better on) I came across a presentation about a complaint filed against the Presedential Debate Commission. Fun stuff, eh?

Anyway, I found the discussion to be interesting and thought provoking in a good way. You can find a Real Player movie to watch about it at www.c-span.org if you do a search on the phrase below or "open debate." Maybe you'll all just think I'm even more wierd for having brought it up, but I think it's worthy of a view. Can't promise it'll work well though. It's kinda hacky on my computer right now.

If that doesn't work out well for you, the website of the hosting organization is at: www.opendebates.org.

Prerelease dates are officially out. (have been for a while, but not on Wizard's site)

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=events/magic/prereleases

I'm not much into the MTG rumormill, so I haven't the foggiest idea of what is in store for us, but I'm looking forward to it. I also checked out the Utah tournament site here:

http://www.theblackrose.com/Darksteel.htm

and it appears that the prizes are back to the levels I was accustomed to during Legions and Scourge, as predicted.

I've already put in that I need January 24th off. That's it for now I guess. A month away is a month away.

Suggestions Box / Forum PVP System
« on: December 19, 2003, 09:19:59 PM »
I know that our TWG PVP system isn't highly developed and suchandall, (many probably didn't even notice it) but I've noticed a problem with the system that could use a little brushing up if anyone ever goes back to look at it. The rebuttal thing at the end of the bout seems to decide everything about the battle.

For instance: (Sorry fuzzyoctopus)

---

You cast your No Spell spell!
fuzzyoctopus defends with a Elemental Shield spell!
spell absorbs 13 damage!
You hit fuzzyoctopus for 9 damage!
fuzzyoctopus has -40 hit points left.

fuzzyoctopus makes a mighty speech!
You try a rebuttle, but fail!
fuzzyoctopus wins the bout point, and screams: 0

---

This was the ending two segments of the titanic battle between fuzzyoctopus and Must-Be-An-Elf-Prometheus. I could be misunderstanding something, but usually getting the enemy to negative hit points means one has won a match.
