Brandon Sanderson / Brandon Stereotype Character Relationships
« on: August 08, 2009, 04:04:32 AM »
Has anyone else noticed that the "visionary/scholarly son with tyrant father falls in love with independent girl" theme has popped up a few times in Brandon Sanderson's books? Note: If you haven't read these books, don't read what's below.

In Elantris, Raoden (visionary, scholar) has a paranoid, sexist, bad leader of a father who didn't want his son to receive the throne. The girl in the picture is Sarene, who's very politically adept, and she's a very good leader.

In Mistborn, Elend (visionary, scholar) is domineered by his dictator of a father and falls in love with Vin who's a really sneaky, combat-savvy Mistborn.

In Warbreaker, there's two situations of this, but both don't have all the characteristics. Susebron (son) has no father but the priests act as a very indirect father figure (tyrant father) and he falls in love with Siri who manages to navigate through politics quite well for someone with no experience (independent). That one's far-fetched, but the beginnings of the Vivenna/Vasher romance (which hasn't happened yet in Warbreaker) has Vasher (scholar, sort-of-visionary) are more accurate in the couple's relationship, although there is no tyrannic father.

I know the connection is weak in Warbreaker, but it is there, and it's been used strongly in both Elantris and Mistborn. I wonder if we'll see any more of these in the future. Did anyone else notice?

Brandon Sanderson / Signing in Montreal
« on: August 02, 2009, 11:25:50 PM »
I'm a great fan of Brandon Sanderson, and I've read everything he's published (except the Alcatraz series). I read his blog and listen to his WritingExcuses pod-casts, so I was extremely excited to hear that he's coming to Montreal. What I'm wondering is, what happens at these signings? How long do they last? Does anyone have any comments about any signings they've gone to? I normally don't go to these kinds of things but then again the first artist I've really become a major fan of is Mr S. Should I go?
