Movies and TV / Treme
« on: August 07, 2010, 08:19:08 AM »
I feel like I've been posting a lot of these different topics about things I've been watching... is it bugging you guys?

Actually on topic:

I just caught the first episode of this show today, shortly after learning of its existence.  It's from David Simon, the mastermind behind The Wire of which I have only seen the first season, but quite loved it.  Set in New Orleans three months after Hurricane Katrina, it follows a number of different characters, ranging from Jazz musicians to lawyers, through their lives in the city.  Like The Wire it is deeply complex, and each character is multi-faceted, but it never feels like too much.  It feels like watching actual people living through the tragic events.

I know that it is green-lit for a second season, thank goodness, and I fully intend to finish this season, and watch the next.  HBO always seems to deliver on its content.  I'm interested in a couple of shows that they are producing right now... Boardwalk Empire, set during prohibition, and written by writers from The Sopranos, and Game of Thrones, which I am sure most of you are familiar with.

Anyway, anyone else seen Treme?  If not, I fully recommend that you check it out if you get the chance.  Make the chance if you can.  :)

Books / Atonement
« on: August 04, 2010, 06:52:02 PM »
I picked this book up off of my friend's book shelf on a whim, intending to scan through the first few pages to get an idea of the style.  Instead I ended up sitting there, reading it for the rest of the day until I was finished, basically.  I don't usually read this kind of book, but it was fantastic.  Anybody else?

Video Games / Monster Hunter Tri
« on: July 18, 2010, 01:09:47 AM »
I looked around, didn't see a topic, so I thought there should be one.

I recently picked a copy of this up, and I am sincerely loving it so far - I've dabbled with a couple on the PSP, and found them fun, but lacking.  But Tri, I have had great fun with.

Anyone else play this, or other games in the series?  Also, I know there is some sort of online mode, so feel free to post whatever contact information you need.  I haven't checked that part out yet, so I'm not exactly sure what you need, but I think I read it was friend code free.  <shrug>

Also, if you haven't checked this out yet, I highly recommend it.  It's great fun.  : )

Movies and TV / Doctor Who
« on: June 29, 2010, 01:45:41 AM »
Sorry if there's another post... I didn't see one when I looked.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else had watched the season finale.  I was pretty disappointed with the new doctor, until about halfway through this season, and then, IMO, he just got better and better, until the finale is one of my favorite episodes of Who.

Anyone else?  Opinions of Matt Smith?  Amy Pond (whose real-life name, I cannot recall)?  Favorite episodes?  Least favorite?  Anything?

Video Games / the 3DS
« on: June 22, 2010, 01:07:40 AM »
Is anyone else as ridiculously excited about this as I am?  All of the announced games look amazing, and I'm never sad to know another Kingdom Hearts game is coming.

I hear that the 3D aspect of it is mind-blowing - sadly, it won't work for me (I assume), since I'm blind in one eye, but still - exciting stuff from Nintendo.

I find it kind of funny that Nintendo is doing 3D, and camera MoCo through a handheld, and (seemingly) doing it better than Sony and Microsoft, respectively.  :-)

Writing Group / Length of Fantasy Novels
« on: May 02, 2010, 10:33:13 AM »
So... I'm very nearly finished with my first novel - I am finishing up all the major revisions that I know it needs, and then passing it out to some people to make sure that I didn't miss something.  I plan on trying to publish it when it is finished, assuming I don't decide it is a pile of garbage (which I don't expect).  However, it is only about 300 pages long, which is MUCH shorter than most fantasy novels that I have read.

Maybe this is an absurd question, but is it too short?  I mean, I tell the story that needs to be told, but I just can't shake the feeling that it is too short.  <shrug>  Obviously you can't really tell me for sure, since you haven't read it, but what do you think?

Movies and TV / The Virgin Suicides
« on: May 02, 2010, 09:50:56 AM »
I watched this film several weeks ago, and it has been just playing over and over in my head ever since.  I find myself thinking back to it frequently.  I was just wondering if anyone else has seen it and had a similar reaction.  Like it?  Dislike it?

I think it's so haunting because of its mysterious quality - it's haunting for the same reason that the boys can't stop thinking about the titular suicides.

I've also seen Sofia Coppola's other films, Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette, and they share a similar element.  She seems to make great films, IMO.  Her new one should be out this year... Somewhere, I think it is called.

Video Games / The Last Guardian
« on: October 21, 2009, 06:06:53 PM »
I stumbled across the trailer for this game (Here's the video), and it was so pretty I thought I would share.  It's by the team who made Ico and Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2.  Ico is my favorite game, and I haven't gotten around to Shadow yet, but I hear it's great.  I'm pretty excited for this game to come out.

Anyone else pick this one up yet?  Just beat it, and I quite enjoyed it.  Top quality, just like I would expect from the Squeenix.

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn Movie
« on: July 20, 2009, 09:13:58 PM »
So, as I am sure most of you already know, Brandon has said that there is a chance of a Mistborn movie happening somewhat soon.

Quote
Who is in charge of the Mistborn movie you mentioned at the #tweettheauthor?

Thank you so much, I love your books!

It is a small production studio, so nobody you'd recognize.  The producer is a fan of the Mistborn books who has some credentials in independent films, and who has impressed me with his treatment of the books and his determination to make the film.  This individual is starting a production company to focus on the film.  We're in the contract stages now, and once that is done, I can be more specific.

It's not like the Alcatraz movie, which was optioned directly by a studio.  Because of that, the Mistborn movie is probably a lot less likely to happen--but, the hands it is in are quite good.  Anything having to do with Hollywood is a long-shot in the first place, so (after meeting with the producer) I decided that I'd rather take the slightly more unlikely chance in exchange for the opportunity to work with someone I felt understood the books.

So, I was wondering if there was any more news than what he has given us here?  Any speculation that you have about the film?  Anything?  Sorry if this has been covered in another thread.  I couldn't find one, but I'm pretty new here, so I could have overlooked it, or something.... <shrug>
