Writing Group / Looking for Someone to do a Read
« on: January 22, 2009, 11:41:23 PM »
I've spent the better part of the last couple hours sitting in the library writing a short story.  I'm going to try and finish it after class and band practices tonight, and before I edit it for content or grammar myself, I'd like to get a few opinions on it.  It looks like it will be about 4-6k words when I'm done, and I feel it is moderately decent.

Anyway, if anybody would like to read some amateur sci-fi/historical fiction and give me some feedback, preferably some people with writing experience, I'd be pretty happy about it.  I also wrote a less than 1,500 word short surrealist piece I don't feel is too great, but could be good with a little improvement (it's short, though, so like a five minute read if that).

So, if you're feeling like you'd like to do me a favor or you'd like to have something to chill with, I'd like the feedback.  Preferably people who think they could read it in the next two or three days and let me know.  I promise it is at least readable.

Thanks!

Video Games / Pinball
« on: January 09, 2009, 08:59:14 AM »
I've spent the last several months working as a manager at an arcade, which is partially devoted to pinball.  I have always enjoyed pinball, but I find myself absolutely enthralled with it now, more so than I am with most modern video games.  Does anybody else still play the game (I know some of you must have been around in the golden age of arcades).  Does anybody have a favorite machine, or know any interesting tricks on any specific tables?  I feel like older games like pinball are completely cast aside in the last decade for more "impressive" modern games, despite their actual challenge, complexity and social aspects...

Music / All About the Fire
« on: July 08, 2008, 06:35:56 PM »
So, I know most the regulars on this board are from Utah or the East Coast, but for anybody who is from Michigan or Canada (across the Detroit River, at least), one of my bands, All About the Fire (www.myspace.com/allaboutthefire), is about to put on a few shows in the Detroit area.

I'm pretty sure all the shows we have lined up right now have no cover charge, and I'd be happy to see anybody there.  Also, we'll be playing with Cowboy Messiah, who I hear is very good.  The first show is this Friday (the 11th) at The Berkley Front, in Berkley, MI.

S.N.E.A.K.S. / Posting Standards
« on: March 09, 2007, 09:57:52 PM »
Quote
You must check and post on the active thread twice a day, not counting weekends or US holidays.

Is this standard still active?  If not, what is the standard?  If people are only going to post once every four or five days, I'd like to not be making my way to a computer to check twice a day just to see nothing new...

Rants and Stuff / Calling Archon
« on: January 07, 2007, 07:22:51 PM »
Hey, I can't ever get ahold of you, but I think you're outta Georgia right now.  Give me a call or AIM me when you get in state or when you get this if you're already in state.  That is, unless you have a time-machine, and you can read this and then go back in time to tell yourself to call or AIM me when you get in state.

AHHHH! There's a spell check in this box!  Nothing looks the same!  I don't even know where to post this!

This Brave New TWG confuses and frightens me!  Seriously?  A spell check?

Everything Else / Things that Go Bump in the Night
« on: October 19, 2006, 02:31:45 AM »
Didn't there used to be a night thread around this joint?  Come on people, I am consistently bored late at night, and I know that at least one or two of you must be, too.  I say we get some posts to entertain we who have nothing to do at 1:30 am. :-D.

Brandon Sanderson / *spoiler* Mistborn Magic Clarification
« on: July 31, 2006, 05:57:51 PM »
Hello Euol, I have a few questions regarding the metals in Mistborn. Are gold and atium considered pushing or pulling metals (if you ever mentioned it, I missed it)? For feruchomy, I get the impression that certain metals can store certain attributes, but it is never spoken of in detail. Could a feruchomist store memories in any metal, or just metal of a certain type? Which metals go to which attributes?

Back to allomancy, which metals last the longest (I known tin is up there), and which the shortest (I know pewter runs out quickly)? Is there a specific order of duration? How rare are the allomantic metals in The Final Empire? Is it possible to be a misting for gold, or atium, or some unknown metals that aren't in the core eight?

College application season for my class, or at least those in my class expecting to both go to college and graduate this year.

And it is essentially a big drain of time.

Yay.  Oh well, the sooner I get back to work the sooner I'll be done get all the bloody forms and the sooner I'll start my essays...

Video Games / LAN problems...
« on: August 21, 2005, 04:42:11 PM »
Okay, I've semi-recently bought a game, Battle for Middle Earth, and I want to play it on a Local Area Network which is set up and working.  The problem is I only have one copy of the game, and the game can only be run with one of the disks.  I know that the game can be configured to run without the disk because a local gaming center has it on their computers, and they do not need the disk to open and play.  They have the game completely put onto their system.

I, unfortunately, do not know how to do this if it is not an option during the installation process, which it wasn't.  I tried copying the disk's files to the PC, also, and tricking the PC into thinking the disk was in, but that didn't work either (I suspect because it has a burn lock or something).  I can't burn it and just play with two disks in two different computers (the burn lock again).  Does anybody know how to do this, or at least have some ideas?  I've pretty much exhausted my will to think about it.

Endless Stars / Admin?
« on: August 13, 2005, 04:13:32 AM »
It seems like this would run much more smoothly if there was a dungeon master or sort running the show.  This person can hold onto all of the stats for all of the systems, take commands for combat privately, and keep files tracking technologies.  This opens up for a much less awkward and more strategic battle experience, diplomatic experience, plus it could add in the ability to use spies, tell the admin where spies are going, they roll some dice or something (we can come up with a system) and give out a certain amount of information about a certain planet, military or technology tree of the player being spied upon.

It wouldn't, however, be fair if the GM was also playing if they were keeping track of all of these secret files, however.  Do you guys think it's a good idea to have a not-playing GM? I think it would make the gameplay much more interesting, and if nobody else was willing to give up their playing spot I would gladly GM.  I just think it adds beneficial layers to the experience, not to mention it makes everything MUCH easier to keep track of, otherwise I can see tons of stats and stuff not being kept track of and the game falling apart due to too much stuff being dealt with by all of the players.

Everything Else / ¡Hola from Spain!
« on: March 25, 2005, 03:45:29 PM »
Hey everybody, I am writing this from a hotel lobby in España.  The keyboard is screwy.  Silly spainards.

This is the first time I´ve had time to write, otherwise I may have done it sooner.

But yeah, for the last week I´ve been tracking across Spain with a group of thirty-six students, seeing cities including, but not limited to, Madrid, Toledo, and right now Sevilla.  It is very nice here, and the €uro is so strong everything is very, very expensive...

Man, I love it here so much.  Tommorow we go to meet out spanish host families, which will leave me helpless to their strange language of which I have decided I am not very fluent in.  At all.  In fact, I am certain that the extent of the family stay will revolve around my asking, ¨How much is this,¨¨Where is the bathroom,¨and, "I´m Hungry...

But I must express again that everywhere I have seen here is infinately supirior to anything I have seen in the states.  Ever.  And I travel a decent amount within th states.
