Reading Excuses / Fateshapers Ch.2 - 12/29/08
« on: December 29, 2008, 11:10:49 PM »
Well, folks, here it is in all of it's oddity. I hope it clears up some of the issues you guys had with it ^ ^, but most of all I hope you like it and can be fair enough to give it a good ripping.

Suggestions Box / RP Board!
« on: December 09, 2008, 06:32:24 AM »
To avoid situations like the Wedding, and the upcoming Dueling-League-related RPs (and whatever else could evolve here...), there should be a board for RPing as an activity. We currently have a board for the academic discussion of RPGs, but nowhere to actually play them out beyond the few places dedicated absolutely to games (like the SNEAKS board).

Think we could get one?

Reading Excuses / Fateshapers - Ch1
« on: December 02, 2008, 11:14:52 PM »
This is the first chapter of my attempt to rewrite one of my longest projects. Fateshapers has a place very close to my heart, and it would honor me deeply if you would be as honest as possible with your critiques and feelings on it.

Originally I intended to write this segment of the series in 5 books, then have a prequel book (a la New Spring, then pair of trilogies delving far back into the history of the world. As for anything later, I'm not sure yet. Just want to finish all of the work I've planned.

I hope you enjoy, and that this rewrite isn't slaughtering the crap out of my story. ^^

Reading Excuses / Mod Voting!
« on: November 19, 2008, 08:40:32 AM »
Alright. Assuming we're allowed to pick our Lord Ruler... I mean Moderator, who would you folks rather have? Any new nominations can be added as they come up.

The poll is open for five days, and anyone who votes may alter their vote until that time. At 12:39 MST, next Sunday, the vote will close.

Reading Excuses / Questions, problems and ideas
« on: November 18, 2008, 02:34:25 AM »
I figured I'd start this for anyone who has a question about something writing-related, or to put up ideas to be critiqued (read: shot full of holes).

NOTE: This isn't for posting swathes of story or anything that large, wait for submission dates for that.

Suggestions Box / RSS Feeds
« on: November 18, 2008, 12:12:25 AM »
Maybe I've missed them if they're here, but would it be possible to set up RSS feeds for threads/boards? My phone has a feed reader, and I'd love to be able to read posts as they come up, so I can have as much time as possible to craft a witty retort.

Reading Excuses / Genre?

So we can get a feel of what kind of a mix we have going here, since I know it isn't going to be the idealistic "even across the board".

Writing Group / Power System thoughts
« on: November 12, 2008, 06:08:21 AM »
Before I sat down to figure out concrete-esque rules for my book's power system, I re-listened to Sanderson's First and Second Laws, and I think I did a decent job (still editing for cliches) - but as with any post here, please be critical!

The source for my system amounts to something along the lines of semi-conscious particles that sit between matter and energy, hiding in the background of other cosmic noise, called the Flow. By manipulating this force (either by channeling it directly, or using it to manipulate other things), one could produce any number of other effects if one was born lucky enough to have influence over the flow - known as Vessels.

To use it, one required focus, and using it required relative amounts of energy - with a small side effect: relative to the power of the use and the time holding it, the force would slowly damage the Vessel's body, first uncovering recently healed wounds, and moving back in time, both opening and expanding old ones.

Small expenditures (if one could, moving a marble an inch instantaneously) would result in soreness, and a bit of an ache; while Larger ones (i.e. funneling the energy from a forest fire into a lake) would begin opening scratches and unmending fractures, and leave the user exhausted on the edge of passing out.

I can post up specific powers and their explanations if this doesn't prove absurd as all hell.

Writing Group / Stuck, right at the gate.
« on: November 11, 2008, 07:12:11 AM »
I have a few different story ideas flitting around in my head, and I've taken shots at starting each one, but I get stuck at the same place: the opening.

Before I even write a book, I sit down for a week or two and mill my characters and my plot around in my head until I've got something. Then I sit down and do that "expand the idea" thing where you write a sentence, then a paragraph, until you have a detailed outline. My friends usually look it over and tell me what they think. Up to that point - it's all fine and awesome.

One I sit down and try to write the beginning though, I start having issues. I don't know how to set up where my characters start, how to pace their introduction, or how soon to throw in the plot-catalyst. I've tried getting ideas from other writers to gauge these, but it all varies a lot.

I'd love some advice!  ;D

Brandon Sanderson / Piracy.
« on: May 14, 2008, 08:24:02 AM »
In light of Brandon's recent blog post about him not believing that he's not all that famous/deserving, I got a little bored and decided to see if he was being pirated yet (which tends to be a fairly good indication of the mainstream) and found this: <link removed>.

Naturally, as one of his fans (own 2 copies of MB1, and 1 of WoA), and a lover of the literary arts as a whole, I don't condone piracy, but I think you guys have to agree that EUOL has finally made it mainstream. I saw him listed in a "Best Fantasy Books" torrent too, but I couldn't find the link when I searched for it again.

**Edit: Link removed.

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn P&P RPG?
« on: May 08, 2008, 07:16:22 PM »
I haven't heard anything about it from an official source (looked around a little), so I was thinking about making Mistborn rules for the d20 system. Initially I was hoping to gauge people's interest, then start gathering ideas and finally putting a finished product together as a PDF or something. Thoughts?

**Edit**
Added "Both".

Brandon Sanderson / Creator...?
« on: April 29, 2008, 11:09:39 AM »
I've noticed that despite the fact that Brandon is writing aMoL now, all of the speculation on this board is still mistborn (a good 95%) and while this isn't a terrible thing, it's a little disheartening as a WoT fan.

That mini-rant aside, I've always had this nagging idea in the back of my head that the Dragon and the Creator are one in the same, that in saving the world at the end of the seventh age (i think the seventh was last), he was attributed with 'creating the world' and he imprisoned Shai'tan by essentially re-weaving the pattern over the Bore. It makes a lot of sense to me, but that may be sleep-deprivations finally setting in.

I know there are a few people who have followed WoT to Brandon, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Brandon Sanderson / Wheel v. Mist
« on: April 26, 2008, 05:31:38 AM »
Now that Brandon is writing A Memory of Light, I was wondering which of those groups people liked best and why. I think it'd be interesting to see how the groups stack up against each other.
