I'll be honest, I've read the series many times , and I never once even considered there to be any hazing in the books at all. Even now I can't think of a single scene of true hazing. There are some nasty things that happen to people and there are some difficult tests, but no actual hazing that I can recall.

Szeth implies that the fact that it changes his eyes when he summons it is unique to that particular one.

Also, Szeth is shorter then most of the other characters, so his sword is well suited to him.

This probably has something to do with the legend that a darkeyes taking up a shardblade becomes a lighteyes. You wouldn't notice with Adolin or the others because they already have light colored eyes.

Book Ten is the worst of the bunch, but I only ever found it annoying when I read it the first time and still had to wait for book 11. On subsequent read throughs it is much more paletable because I know that Book 11 is waiting for me at the end.

It was a failed experiment yes. But the passages are still interesting by themselves. The main complaint about book 10 is there is no overarching plot or progression. The entire book is in response to events at the end of Book 9. Which while an interesting idea, in practice didn't pan out too well in written format.

But I don't have any problem reading it anymore because I don't consider them individual books anymore. It is all part of one story. One HUGE book if you will. :)

Everything Else / Re: Mistborn vs. Asha'man

If they meet with no prior knowedge of the abilities of the other and no preparation of any kind, the ashaman would win. Hands down.

The only way a mistborn could have a hope is if they knew about the power, they did NOT face the ashaman directly, and they kept moving at all times. That is for a hope. Unless they caught the ashaman by surprise/assassination, then they likely still would not win.

Don't get me wrong, Mistborn are awesome. However, the One Power can do almost anything.

Here is a bit of fan art combined with my own character from my webcomic.

Not classic fan art, but it was Mistborn inspired :D

Enjoy :D

Yeah, I'm pretty sick of the grinding in MMO's.

Now I tend to play an MMO until the newness of it wears off or I explore all of the areas of interest. I tend to stike off into places I should go at my level because I bore of the grind.

Books / Re: What are you reading, part 3
« on: March 26, 2009, 04:25:09 PM »
Most books I'll only read once. However there are a select few which are of a certain caliber which just demand multiple readings.

Wheel of Time is such a series. I have read it at least 3 (if not more) times, though truthfully each time I re-read the series it IS longer :D

The Belgariad and Mallorean. Read those at least twice.

Otherland. I'm in the middle of a second read through.

There are others, but they aren't coming to mind. Mistborn is going to be one of those. I've only read it once, but I imagine I'll do it again in a year or so. :)

Miyabi, I totally understand your situation.

When I started college (way back in 99) I had chosen Electrical Engineering as my major because it sounded interesting. (And it is). However, as I went through my classes over the years I found that I was enjoying my non EE classes MUCH more. Then after I had been in school for 6 years, I finally came to the conclusion that I hated my major and that if I had to design one more transistor, I would go nuts. I was 90% of the way through my major, but I also had no desire to go into programming (despite being fairly proficient), so I changed my major to GIS.

When I started college I had never heard of GIS (Geographic Information Science) not did my University even havea program for it until the year before I switched. I discovered it because I was subconsiously trying to avoid EE classes by taking classes that would help with research for my fantasy novel. I took all sorts of classes, from poetry to history to geography. I took a class titled Geomorphology (all about how the earth changes shape, form, appearance, vulcanism, tectonic movements, weathering, etc.) because I wanted a large seizmic event in my novel. This was an amazing class for me. I had never thought of earth sciences as a viable option before. I was an engineer at heart, liked numbers and the challenge of problem solving, so I didn't want to go for any major that I perceived as less technical. (I was a snob). Then I discovered GIS and I found that college could be fun again.

Now I am a Cartographer/ GIS Analyst for the government.

In the end you have to be totally honest with yourself. You have to be able to enjoy what you are going to be doing for the next 30 years. It has to spark your interest and you have to be good at it.

Could I have been a successful Electrical Engineer? Yeah. Totally. But I would likely have been miserable. All the money in the world is not worth being miserable.

Movies and TV / Re: Dollhouse
« on: March 24, 2009, 03:16:29 PM »
I am really really enjoying this show. I just found out about it on Friday, and my wife and I watched all 6 available episodes over the weekend on hulu.

The premise is VERY interesting. Much more so than other TV shows. The humor is not as obvious as past Wedon shows but there is an underlying darkish humor about the show.

Each episode got more and more intense. I love how things are spiraling out of control! It confirms my own thoughts on the complexity and indominability of the human spirit/mind. I really like the characters who run the Dollhouse, their morality is very interesting. I love the variability of the clients too. I really rather felt bad for the guy whose wife had died and when Echo went back, it was a combination sweet, touching and creepy. That is hard to pull off.

All in all I think this is being handled VERY well.

I respectfully disagree. :)

I believe you are confusing complex raional thinking with simple planning.

Usage of tools has little to no relevance on the ability to plan.

As with most things there is a gradient of abilities, not a simple "On/Off".

Simians have better planning ability than dogs, cats or hamster, but that does not imply that the dogs, cats, or hamsters have no such ability.

Instinct is a powerful motivator, but I think it is overemphasized in animal behavioral analysis. Studies in recent years have shown animals often act contrary to instinct, and think about things, and yes, even perform simple planning.

Instinct is an ancient "catch-all" for those who thought animals were souless automatons. Animals are really much more amazing than that.

I've seen my dog get angry at us, pause for a moment, then run off to the living room and deliberately pee on the couch in an effort to get back at us. (Most times he would even wait for us to follow him into the room, so that we could see him do it) That is a form of planning. And when a dog had been house trained for 6 years and does this, it is quite obvious that there is more going on inside that head than instinct.

Edit: fixed spelling (Thanks for pointing that out, I KNEW it looked wrong!) :D

Rants and Stuff / Re: These Stupid Titles VIII

'Doctor' is kind of boring though…they could've at least tagged on a specialty or something.  ;D

"Doctor" is not boring at all. (depending on how geeky you are)

The Doctor (flying around in the TARDIS), is probably one of the best titles to have. Period. :)
