Role-Playing Games / Re: column: Nerdery #43: Gamers Couple Therapy
« on: April 16, 2007, 12:17:29 AM »
So I met my boyfriend gaming. We each have two characters. One of his characters is about to get killed, in part because one of my characters insisted upon it. My other character loves his character that is about to get killed because she makes fun of him all the time. His other character hates my other character and they scheme to get the better of each other frequently. I have more connections with my roommate's character than my boyfriend's, since we play the same character type in the same group. So really, there isn't any favoritism with my boyfriend and I. We help each other when it calls for it (and then out of character say "you owe me") and we back stab each other when it calls for it (and say out of character "I'm sorry hun!!") But I defiantly see favoritism happening, and see how it can, easily, happen. We try really hard not to do that, which I think is why people haven't gotten annoyed with us like they do most. In addition my boyfriend GM's a game I play in, and there isn't any favoritism... except that he let me make a new character at the last minute instead of the usual week time frame for submitting characters, but he does that for others as well.

I guess all that was just to say, I think I'm lucky to be part of an atypical gamer couple, and I love gaming with him.  ;D

Could Jack be a TRAITOR!?! Nooooooo. It must be an act, right?

My vote is for brain washing.

I was pretty shocked about Claire and Jack, but at the same time it all makes some sort of sense... I missed it when it was on but watched it yesterday online and got odd looks from roommates when I ghasped or went OMG randomly (I had headphones on and a laptop in my lap they had no idea what I was doing)

Books / Re: review: Runaways, Volume 1

I really like Runaways. I'm studying to be an English Teacher and we had to get various books and book types and develop lesson plans to teach the students and get them interested in different types of literature. I did a report and series of lesson plans on this. Through this I actually got a bunch of my peers and students to read it, and they also really liked it. I think it appeals to a younger crowd, which makes it great for schools.
I have actually been looking for the second volume the last couple weeks but they are sold out wherever I look and I'm refusing to buy it online, so I'll just continue to impatiently wait.

So I missed last week... so I'm not sure why Charlie is going to die? But I hope not! And I'm not sure I totally get the whole time reliving thing either... I must go in search of the episode I missed.
Thats one thing I kind of like, and kinda dislike about this season. The two different groups pretty much alternate weeks so I can miss last week and not really have missed the Jack/Kate/Sawyer stuff... but I prefer the other group at this point... Jack/Kate/Sawyer stuff is getting a bit repetitive.

I saw the movie twice, once with friends the day after it came out, and again with my boyfriend who is a HUGE fan of the comic.
We all liked it. Sure there were definitely things to criticize, but it was entertaining. There were cliches all over the place, and the fights with the bad guys made us go... huh? but I think that Nick Cage and the other actors all did a good job and I had a good time. It was a fun movie.

The haircut stood out to me as well. I don't like it either. The whole flying through a city kinda bugs me as well.

I thought the movie was cute, but the ending was a bit trite. I agree that it resolved just way too quick and easily. The music was really the highlight for me.

it wasn't a HORRID movie... but it was not memorable either. It was a cute thing to watch given the right mood and audience, but in the wrong circumstances I can see how it would be blah.

so I was poked and proded by Jeffe to check out this thread (ok not really, just an instant message) and awesome idea! A gathering sounds awesome. Sadly, however, this poor Mainer who would adore meeting people in real life, cannot be in attendance. I could have probably pulled off Boston or New York but even those are pushing it. Plus I have to teach the Friday and Monday around it.
Have a blast guys! Next time (I hope theres a next time!) I will do my very best to go and see all you lovely people!

You mean having a career that goes nowhere, giving a terrible performance in "Twister," and then fading into oblivion? Even if Bloom never makes another movie, he's had more success tahn Elwes, who is only noteworthy for "Bride" and "Glory."

Robin Hood Men in Tights.... he was good in that too...

They both have the eyecandy factor, but I do believe that is a good point. Orlando's already more successful.

I was so depressed by the quivering pile of yuck that Cary was in Saw, thats for sure. Because, yes, after Bride and Robin I fell in love with him - like any good young little stereotyped girl.

Im not so sure I see Orlando becoming like Cary Elwes...
I thought the sword fights in this were kind of lacking. Lets see how many crazy wacky things we can do while trying to have a sword fight!
Hamster wheels, climbing things, too much focus on the running around part of it, and not enough on the actual swordplay.
The first movie had the crazy run around do wierd stuff, but they showed skill with a sword, I dont think this one did that.
But thats just my opinion.

I dont often tabletop so we dont have the same exact problems, but with LARPing you often walk into a conversation that is out of character thinking its in and it gets frustrating. You are supposed to use a hand signal to denote out of character, but if its a group where everyone is out people dont always bother till someone new comes in confused.
