Brandon Sanderson / Re: Rights For Spren!!!! (minor spoilers)
« on: October 16, 2010, 05:40:23 AM »
I wonder if Hoid measured the super spren.

Also if it is a set pattern then it seems like you would have had to measure the spren 2x. This way you could have the amount of time that passes between the two appearances as part of your measurement. Then having been measured that way it would continue to repeat every time at the same time.

In fact this could be another way to use spren. Hmm Spren must go somewhere else when they are not in the physical world. I wonder if you could give something to a spren to hide. If you had already made and recorded an observation of a spren appearing more then once could you then give something to the spren and make a second record of what you gave the spren. This way if you know when the spren will appear you could get back what ever you gave to the spren.

Reading this I just thought of something.

I think there should be 2 classifications of Spren. Intelligent spren those who have a direct role in magics such as surgebinding. And all other Spren which I believe more or less are not intelligent. Furthermore I say that Fabrial science as known now is most likely only using the more common Spren. It seems that most people don't even have knowledge of the more powerful spren which the magic systems are based on. If this is true then perhaps a more intelligent spren such as an honor spren could make a more powerful fabrial then is now known.

My guess as of right now are there are 10 special spren that are above all other spren which would be the common spren.
Could it be possible that these 10 spren that are above all others are used to make sharblades? This would make a shardblade an even greater evil as spren such as honorspren are self aware. Is it possible that these spren willingly sacrificed themselves to stop the voidbringers? If this is so could it be that a spren would see the blatant misuse of sharblades to kill humans as a great sin and tragedy. Perhaps the greatest sin against the spren is the misuse of shardblades.

Forgive my wild theories but it sure is fun to come up with this stuff.

I guess when he gets to the 4th book he will begin to understand.

I don't think he is dead. If I where to guess I would say that you could only get one of the Heralds Blades if it is given to you.  Of course if you have one of there blades then maybe you would become a Herald.

how would the transitioning be from outside the bubble to inside the bubble? would it slowly affect time more and more as you get closer to the center of the bubble? or would it be that just anything within range goes at the same speed no matter how far away it is?

That's a good question. Wish I knew the answer. I think that it would be the same every where inside the bubble. I could be wrong on that though. If its slowest at the very center it puts the person in the middle at a big disadvantage. Also this would make it somewhat difficult to use in a fight as any enemies around you would be moving faster then you.

That would be cool. I would love to see Kaladin with a Shard Spear. It just doesn't seem right to force him to use a sword when he is already so good with a spear. A Dawnshard spear would be even better. All though I kind of wish shard weapons could be made less lethal sometimes by there wielders. After all sometimes you don't want to kill your opponent.

It seems to me that the one that slows down is only really useful if used with a team. But in the right situation and with friends its very powerful. You see you get near a bunch of enemies then slow things down so that you and all the enemies around you appear to be moving super slow. Then your friends can used ranged weapons to take out all the enemies. Since this will be in the next book chances are they will have weapons like guns and can just shoot down the people who got stuck in your slow field.

That won't work. Any projectile fired into the field would slow down with you. Really, it would be good for taking one very powerful person out of a fight in a critical moment, by getting close to them and slowing down time, buying everyone else enough time to take out their friends and be ready to help you when you drop the bubble.

Yes I already thought of that. Even though everything inside slows down a projectile weapon would be much faster then the people in the field. So from the perspective of the person who is controlling the field they would die at the same speed that it takes a bullet to reach its target. As soon as the targets are down the time bubble could be stopped. Unless there is some kind of effect that makes projectile weapons moving into the field no longer work. Any way from the perspective of the people outside the field they just have to make sure there shots are fired accurately and then they can move on. It might appear to them that the shots are moving very slow when they go into the field but that shouldn't matter as they don't need to wait for them to hit the targets they can move on to other enemies. If the team is skilled it should work.

Part of this depends on how much this slows things down. If it makes things supper slow and the field inside makes even bullets stop in mid air then it wouldn't be practical for the person controlling the field to wait for long enough to confirm all targets dead. He might just stop things for half a second and then trust that his allies took the shots. In fact it might be best if he simply does short bursts so stops things for those around him for a fraction of a second then makes things move forward and then if necessary does another burst of slow. After each time ending the effect he could evaluate the battlefield and either do another burst or move to another location.

By the way does any one remember what these guys that slow things down are supposed to be called? Because the more I think about what they can do the cooler they seem. I mean I could be wrong about this whole thing but I am pretty sure they could have a huge effect on a battlefield if used correctly. The key is of course positioning.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Ruin-like Odium?
« on: September 14, 2010, 09:41:59 AM »
I have two problems with this idea. The first is that I find it unlikely for Brandon to repeat himself in that way. I think him better than that.

The second is that it doesn't make much sense. It seems clear that Odium engineered the end of the Oathpact and has been biding his time sowing dissent among men. A united humanity is what kept repulsing his attacks in the past. Why would he want Dalinar to unite anyone?

Taravingian, on the other hand, I don't quite get. He seems to be working towards a united humanity, even if it's in a twisted, wrongheaded way. So why doesn't he want Dalinar to unite Alethkar? Him, I could buy as a servent of Odium, or at least someone who's been duped by him.

I think Taravingians idea is pretty simple. If Dalinar unites the Alethkar they will be strong but will also most likely be opposed to him. Also he is probably looking for a bigger unification not just one people but all peoples. I get the feeling that Alethkars while possible to unite with themselves would have difficulty uniting with other cultures. Taravingian is probably trying to create a situation where he can get control. Knowing him he will probably not reveal his true face for a long time. He is most likely going to hide his true nature for a while longer. It will probably seem to others that he is trying to help when in fact he is trying to gain control and power. Its really hard to say at this point where things will go for Taravingian. He may redeem himself somehow or slip further and further away into evil while trying to do what he thinks is right.

Nicely done. I like the pic. I would say since its not been long since the Way of Kings has been officially released you wont get any really cool pics for a while. Takes time to make good art. Any way I look forward to seeing what people come up with. I am certain that there will be a good amount sooner or latter.

We can't really be sure what the time line is. If this is significantly after the time line of Elantris they may have learned a way to use there Aons even when they are not near Elantris. Perhaps they would be able to make some kind of Bridge and tie it to another location and connect it to Elantris somehow. I know I am reaching some but I am just saying we can't count anything out. It would be cool if you didn't just have Elantrians but Elantrians who could use Aon Dor.
