Brandon Sanderson / Re: Did the Lord Ruler ... ? (Spoilers)

It has been a while since I read this, but doesn't "contact with Ruin" require a hemalurgic spike? Just any type of metal in the body is not enough from what I gathered. The "implants" the Lord Ruler had were only to prevent anyone Pulling or Pushing them.

If any metal in the body would work, Ruin could speak to anyone who swallowed some metal...

That's right, although he also has some influence over people who are mentally unstable. That's how he got Zane to spike himself.  Rashek was a violence prone, angry person to begin with, and ruling an empire for several hundred years may have worn down his sanity somewhat.  He most likely made the first Koloss and Kandra personally, which also could unhinge someone.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Soulcasting too powerful!

1) There is nothing wrong with "Soft" (no concrete rules) magic systems.  They have to be handled differently than "Hard" (rules set in stone) systems like Allomancy, but it's okay for authors to use them.
2) Surgebinding is kind of a general term.  Szeth's powers are called Windrunning.
3) AonDor has plenty of limiting factors, like distance from Elantris, and the Aons that allow it to be used.  (There's even a glossary in the back.)  Just because we don't know the exact limits of the magic, doesn't mean Brandon doesn't.  Would you want to have to memorize Aons to be able to read the book?
4) Soulcasting has similar limits.  Want Strawberry Jam?  You're going to need an emerald.  And each gemstone can only be used to Soulcast so much before being destroyed.  There's a table in the back of the book that shows what can be Soulcast from which gem.  And, again, just because we don't know the exact limits doesn't mean Brandon doesn't.
5) It's a story!  When Vin's Pewter runs out it isn't because Pewter burns faster than other metals. (Though that is the explanation the book gives.)  It runs out because Brandon decides it is time for her pewter to run out.

Then again, we don't know for sure The Almighty is dead until Chapter 2, "Honor is Dead."

Why a lesbian?

Because there are lesbians on Scadriel, and this one does something important.

All the new metals are on the Table of Allomantic Metals that Brandon has for sale in his store.  Wikipedia also has the info on them in the article, "Allomancer."  (Yes, that article actually exists.)

Missing?  I know I returned it.  Just put yourself on the waiting list.  You won't find it on the shelves. Ever.  Of course, by missing, you could also mean that you ARE on the waiting list and it hasn't gotten to your turn yet.  It's probably a really long list.

A quote from Orson Scott Card  (and the fact that it was $7 hardback) is the reason I bought and read Elantris!  OSC changed my life!

When it comes to the logic behind the mistfallen, atium replaces cadmium for the purposes of the mistsickness.

I'm not sure I follow.  Elaborate.

As for the number of metals, that's two new metals and their alloys.  Atium and Lerasium are called the "God metals" for a reason, and don't really fit into the rest of them.  I don't have time to go really in depth.  As for the army of Atium burners...yeah, I always felt they should have been mistborn.  Then again, the chart shows the in-world understanding of how they work as of maybe a few years after the series.  Who knows what information could be completely wrong?  Compare the chart at the end of TFE to the one after THoA.  Completely different.  And people thought they understood allomancy.  And since Brandon has plans for more books in that world...

Well if you're really really lucky, they might have the one and only copy of Dragonsteel in the library literally a few feet from the bookstore.  Um....There's J-dawgs pretty close to campus, if you like hotdogs.

The shelf is now occupied by a few copies of Warbreaker, TGS, and a big ol' pile of Fablehaven.
