Brandon Sanderson / Re: Allomancy: full powers of metals (spoilers)
« on: July 27, 2011, 04:39:45 AM »
The reason Zane was so skilled/powerful with steel is because he was hemalurgically spiked.

Also check out the Table of Allomantic Metals released a couple years ago. It has the complete allomantic effects of all sixteen regular metals plus the two God Metals, as known in-world, a few centuries after the events of HoA. (ie. around the time of the second trilogy)

Everything said by Allomancer Jak is likely a lie.  In fact, I doubt there is even a real person named "Allomancer Jak".  Still, his story at least shows that koloss still exist and in tribes.  And if only one generation of using old spikes could create someone as sophistocated as Human, imagine how sophisticated koloss may be after three hundred years of using them.  They may even be able to create weapons of as "incredibly fine make" as Jak claims.

Yeah, it seems clear to me that the whole thing is a fabrication designed to help sell the paper with just enough grounding in reality to give it plausibility.  The hinting at continued production of new koloss through spiking might be no more than a reference to ancient legends, or it might contain a kernel of modern truth, I have no idea.

When Sazed ascended he changed the Koloss. They are no longer Hemalurgic creations but a new race that breads true.

Zane's spike granted steel Allomancy; it's the reason his steelpushes were abnormally strong and precise (ie. floating perfectly still in mid-air with just a single coin).

A pewter spike strait through the front of chest, and through the heart, grants steel Feruchemy.

Those two I know for certain. I had some notes on some others but I can't find them right now. Although I feel I should mention that location in the body is only one of three factors which determine what any given spike does. (The other two being the metal the spike is made of and the abilities of the person used to imbue the spike.)

I can't remember any specific dishes right now but there's a character in Elantris, Kiin I think, who's a master chef. IIRC he prepares two or three feast throughout the book so I's skim through it and see if there's anything interesting there. He mostly appears in Sarene Chapters I believe.

ps. Make sure to post your final recipes so we can all try them.  ;D

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Cosmere Timeline * Slight Spoilers for all books*

So far the published books have all happened in the same order they were release in. There are books that take place in between but they have not yet been published/sold.

And we do know Odium's visit to Sel happened before the events of Elantris. Popular theory states that Odium somehow caused the Reod but that has been neither confirmed nor denied, at least to my knowledge.

Thank you Peter, I have fixed those. I toyed with the idea of cleaning up the dialogue but in the end I decide to stay as true to the actual audio as possible. I may do a cleaned up version later. Of course, anyone else is welcome to do so as well and I will add the link(s) to my post, with credit of course.

Is it alright with you if I post it to the 17th Shard blog? If it is and I do, I'll clean up the ums.

Fine by me.  I also posted the transcript links on the 17th Shard Forums BTW.
Here's a link to that topic: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/index.php/topic,335.0.html

Also if anyone else wants to post the transcript links on any other fansite(s) and/or blog(s), please feel free.
Y0u can just credit Morderkaine on TWG and/or 17th Shard.

I have transcribed most* of the interview - including um's, uh's, stuttering and other such things - that the folks in charge of The 17th Shard did back in August and placed it in a publicly viewable Google doc (the whole thing is well over 8000 words and would require 23 post to contain it on the forums).

*There were a couple things barely caught by the mics that I just couldn't make out as well as one case where a race from an un-published book was mentioned, the spelling of which I had to guess.

I thought I heard somewhere that book two was going to be called The Highprince of War, or something like that, so wouldn't that apply to Sadeas?

Yes, The Highprince of War is the tentative/working title for book two of the Stormlight Archives, but that's Dalinar's position, not Sadeas's.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: A use for Aluminum

Aluminum/Duralumin Gnats could also get a lot of good use out of burning their metals if they are also Feruchemic Mistings, depending of course on what the Feruchemical uses of Aluminum and Duralumin are.
But do we know that if you're both an Allomantic and Feruchemical Misting that the metal you use is automatically the same for both?  I don't think so, but it's a possibility.

Yes, it is possible to be an Allomantic misting of one metal and a Feruchemical misting of another. I meant to say that it was assuming an single-metal dual-magic misting.

I want to see a Parshendi Shardbearer pushed to the limits of their abilities. Think about it, if regular Parshendi can jump chasms that human Shardbearers won't dare, how epic must Shardplate enhanced Parshendi be.

You know, that never even occurred to me. But then again, I have an utterly irrational hatred of libraries. I can't stand them. Or books from them, quite frequently. No idea why.

Sounds to me like you've read a little too much Alcatraz.   ;D

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Bridge Crews & Bridges
« on: September 11, 2010, 01:03:22 AM »
The bridges couldn't be weighted otherwise they'd fall into the chasms when they were pulled across from the other side.

Not necessarily. as has been stated, the side you're coming from is higher than the side you're going to. When they pull the bridge over, they could rest the weighted end on the cliff face, and pull out the front, letting the weighted side (resting on the cliff face) slide down, until they can just pull it over.

I'm not sure that I understand what you trying to say. What do you mean rest the bridge against the cliff face?.

things to be added     things to be removed

91.3 - "She blinked open her eyes to find the king and his bodyguard huddled against the wall beside to her."
155.6 - "Well, then, they could attack from the sea!"
158.1 - "Leaves were plastered by rainwater to the rough sides of the barracks."
161.4 - "You'd always find the young, untrained men and protect them, even though it put you into danger."
172.3 - "The crab squirmed some more, and Nan Balat held up the leg, pinching the beast with two fingers on in his other hand."
270.11 - "He pressed a bandage against the side, holding it in place with his knee, then tied a quick bandage on the leg, ordering one of the soldiers bridgemen to hold it firm and elevate the limb."
447.9 - "He summoned his Shardblade in the stillness and dark, then used it to slice a hole in the dome, angling his Blade so that the chunk of rock did not fall down inside."
Earlier, in paragraph 5, it is implied that he has already summoned his Blade, and he doesn't dismiss it: "Ten heartbeats after the passing of the guards, Szeth Lashed himself to the wall."
483.5  -"Kal had an image in his head of the reptilian creatures, as big as horses but with carapaces across their backs"
659.4 - "Maybe the Almighty is preserving you," Syl said."
718.6 - "Szeth leaped off the wall, Lashing himself downward as he flipped, landing with one knee on the dinning table."
For Szeth "downward" is the wall because he's currently Lashed to it. Therefor Lashing himself downward would just re-Lash him to the wall and not the floor.
720.7 - "He Lashed himself back downward, dropping behind the Shardbearer to land on the broken table top."
   See above
735.13 - "That was the very same reason they didn't let Renarin ride into battle."
804.4 - "One day," Hoid said, "while Derethil and his men were sparring to regain their strength, a young serving girl brought them refreshments."
879.5 - "I'm convinced my master keeps an extra apprentice especially for those kinds of situations."
