Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Ten Focus Characters of the 10 SA Books

Peter: Now you're just being mean.

I just wanted to mention, about Talenel, that in the prelude he's described as the Herald who always went where the fight was worst and the chances were smallest.  They say he had a thing for lost causes.  Sounds like an interesting character to have in the series to me.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Gavilier (spoiler)

The real question here is how many different ways we can spell the name "Gavilar."  I've counted four so far in this thread.

On topic, though, I like the Shallan blade theory.  That might actually spoil Book 2 for me, because I can see that being a big deal when she's forced to pull the blade to save someone/something, and everyone's like "Assassin in White!"

Then Sadeas has to step up and be all "I remember the Assassin in White, it wasn't this chick," or, in an even more evil step because ruining Shallan somehow undermines Dalinar, saying "I remember exactly the Assassin in White, and it was DEFINITELY this chick."

You've all got it completely wrong.

Hoid was obviously sick of walking around on foot, so he manipulated the Shadesmar to his own ends so as to create an alternate-universe paradox shift wormhole rip, wherein he stole a buncha horses from old Europe and plunkedem down on Roshar DUH

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Authors, Monetary Success and Brandon
« on: October 03, 2010, 05:00:09 PM »
Peter: When you say "too high by a LARGE margin," do you mean too high as in inaccuracy (as in he's definitely not paid $1.7 million), or too high as in Brandon's been treated way too nicely?

I'm prone to believe you when you say that he's paid very fairly considering the success he's had, though, whatever that number is.

Brandon Sanderson / The Ten Focus Characters of the 10 SA Books
« on: October 02, 2010, 01:54:04 AM »
There's gonna be a focus character for each of the ten books, like how Kaladin was the focus character for a Way of Kings (showing his backstory).  Brandon said that we've already met each of the viewpoint characters, and that he's not sure if the next book is going to be a Dalinar book or a Shallan book.  He also said that by the end of the epilogue, we've met all of the characters, which means that Talenel is going to be one of them.  He also mentioned in some interview that he'll probably have two Kaladin books, and that Szeth will get a book.  This means that the following viewpoints are confirmed:

Kaladin x2
Dalinar
Shallan
Szeth
Talenel

That leaves four more.  My guesses would be the following:

Adolin
Jasnah

After that, I'm not so sure.  Here are the ones that I think would be possible:

Renarin
Elhokar
Wit/Hoid
Axies the Collector
Sadeas
Naeaverirenaifenvae whatever the crap the Queen's name is

Renarin and Elhokar are probably the most likely of the semi-likely, which would mean the following viewpoints:

Kaladin x2
Dalinar
Shallan
Szeth
Talenel
Adolin
Jasnah
Renarin
Elhokar

What do you guys think?  Which characters are you most looking forward to / least looking forward to?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: "Finish The Book...Brandon!!!"

If there is anyone writing epic fantasy today who DOESN'T deserve being rushed, it is Brandon Sanderson.  Has anyone else produced nearly as many books as he did these last two years?

But considering how close we are to the end of the Wheel of Time, I can certainly understand the underlying sentiment, there.

On the topic of Elhokar, might Shalan try currying his favor by showing him how he can visit the Shadesmar?  Might she try to get him to marry her so she can save her house and family?  Might Adolin then be pissed because he finally started REALLY liking a girl, and then she goes flirty with the King?

Uh, probably not.

Nah, Peter mentioned that Dragonsteel was missing, too, and Brandon would've told Peter about it if he were retracting it.

Is it possible that the guy is just freaking exhausted from suffering infinite torment for hundreds of years?

The fact that it looked as if he had just swam a great distance seems, to me, to suggest that he just zapped in from wherever shardblades come from... you know, how they're coated in moisture when they first zap in?  He was coated in moisture, too.

Of course, there's also the mention of the twigs and leaves in his beard, which is pretty friggin' weird, too.  Don't know how to explain that.

I wouldn't mind a shirt that said BRIDGE 4, and then in subtitles below it, "Kaladin is my homie".

You know how it says, somewhere, that one of the three viewpoint characters would ruin the world?  (I don't remember where, but that means that either Dalinar, Shallan, or Kaladin are going to do something really stupid.)  My bet is on Kaladin.  He just seems too easily embittered, and while he did a ton of good in this first book, I can easily see him turning into a much shadier guy as we get deeper into the series.

I mean, once he gets his powers developed, he'll be just as unstoppable as Szeth--but without any random oaths to anybody else.  I can see him going Loose Cannon on Roshar brightlords sometime in the future.

Dalinar or Adolin might never kill Sadeas, but Kaladin?  Oh, boy.

If you scan through the comments at the reaction post, Brandon wrote a nice reply basically saying "okay, yeah, you're right, I was pretty flippant about how I defined it."  Good on him.

Also, if you read through the comments and filter out all of the "this is why I don't like Brandon Sanderson," you come across a lot of interesting thoughts about fantasy and real postmodernism, if anyone's interested.

I agree and disagree.  I liked getting into Brandon's head; I think one of my favorite things about him is his frankness about how he approaches his writing.

But the criticism was absolutely merited.  For a New York Times bestselling novelist to make a blog post titled "Postmodernism in Fantasy," and then go on to say he knows nothing about postmodernism and then butcher the term all over the place to suit his essay... that should be criticized.

What Brandon should've done, in my estimation, is make all the same points without using the terms postmodern, postmodernism, deconstruction, and especially not "deconstructionism" (which is not actually a real term).  There was nothing wrong with any of the points he made; the essay was interesting, and such, but there are entire schools of thought based on Postmodernism, and for him to clumsily butcher the term in a post that titles itself "Postmodernism in Fantasy"... something just needed to be said.  Not necessarily as an enormous "OH EM JEEZ UR WRONG ABOUT POSTMODERNIZM" outcry, but as a dialogue that says: "Look, we got famous authors who are slinging this term around, and they're not doing it justice.  Here's what it REALLY is."

I look forward to someday reading a real essay about actual postmodernism in fantasy.  Sanderson's obviously not gonna be the one to write it, though.
