Brandon Sanderson / Re: Prophecy in Mistborn?
« on: October 07, 2008, 05:26:28 PM »
I've never really thought that we could credit the 11th metal with having a role in killing the Lord Ruler. Technically it ends up giving her a vital clue and you could say that it was used to kill the Lord Ruler, but so many other things had to come together that it doesn't really make sense to me to say that the 11th metal was used to kill him.

The fact of the matter is that Vin tried using the 11th metal directly against the Lord Ruler and that attempt failed horribly.

I suppose this opinion might not make sense in a way. I'm saying that the 11th metal was used to kill the Lord Ruler but can't be credited with the accomplishment in some fashion. Perhaps I should rephrase...I think the prohpecy was bogus...something that Kelsier either made up or just wanted to believe. Given that belief, there's no reason to make a point out of saying that the 11th metal was involved more than pewter or steel or any other metal that Vin used. Perhaps the 11th metal helped kill the Lord Ruler but so many other things did as well that there isn't any reason to talk about it. The more fantastic and unexpected element was Vin pulling on the mists.

The origin of the Terris prophecies is an interesting question, but I'm not sure I can talk about that without getting my reading of Mistborn 3 alpha mixed up with the information that is available to the public, though, so I better not comment.

As much as I loved Kelsier's character, the Gandalf contingency has been done to death.  He is even more influential to the story dead than alive.

He died a good death as far as stories go as well. Finally slaying one of the dreaded Steel Inquisitors and then facing down the Lord Ruler...that's as good as it gets for storybook character arcs. Kelsier was a good one, but it was his time.

I don't expect anyone except Vin has the power to still the koloss.

Keep in mind that OreSeur (okay TenSoon) was telling Vin in book 2 that Mistborn generally were a threat to his people, and that power appears to work in a similar fashion with both kandra and koloss.

I love how you're drawing so many conclusions from 7 words.

Lol stop teasing them, Ookla.  ;)

October is only 46 days away, plus the actual day of release...

This thread will be fun to look back on afterward I think though.

Role-Playing Games / Re: D&D 4th edition??
« on: August 24, 2007, 09:00:19 PM »
Hi guys. Wow, the forums look different now. It's been a while I guess.

Went over the thread just for fun and I thought I'd post on the off-chance that it'll keep Stacer from having to agonize unnecessarily. If you haven't yet and have any interest in 4th edition, I'd recommend checking out the new D&D site at www.wizards.com/dnd --- especially the Design and Development articles after 8/16/2007. The website looks imposing at first glance, but it turns out that if you have a wizards.com login already, you can use the same one without having to register again.

Personally, I'm liking (almost) everything I see. The article on classes was great as it gave a peek at what the 4.0 Fighter might look like. It's a class that's needed fleshing out ever since the game was made, and it looks like it's getting something more than bonus feats finally. They also renamed the article on 'class roles' to 'power sources' which is what it's about anyway.

The article that impressed me the most was the sample fight with an ancient dragon. Throw out your own little internal rulebook when you read it, because the dragon breaks through rules barriers regularly. It takes two standard actions & a move action plus a few free action attack abilities on its own turn just for starters, and uses its breath weapon as an immediate action based on a certain trigger---the fact that it went below half health, I think. Keeping in mind that the dragon is an ancient dragon, however, I can't gripe at it's power. Ancient dragons should be that cool, and they're finally getting a way to deal with the fact that they only get to go once before 4-6 PCs go. In any event, the dragon in the sample fight gets to be far more involved than our typical 3.5 dragon. In 3.5, the dragon would probably either take a full attack or fly/breath weapon, which is pretty dull in comparison.

I'd also note the lack of any attack of opportunity reference (almost - there's one thing that could be an AoO but might not be). There isn't a reference to full attacks either, although that might be incidental...only the dragon ever had an opportunity to make one. The Cleric in the example fight also gets to do some healing while they fight, something that I'd like to see a lot more of.

I probably sound like a huge fan...maybe I am, but I like to think that I'm just waiting until 4th edition releases before I make a decision. The changes being made sound like a lot more than just the version upgrade we saw from 3.0 to 3.5 though, and from what I've seen so far it looks like they may be worth the pain of version update. Books are spendy, and it'll take an awfully big improvement for me to re-invest, but this might be enough. I'll find out as we go.

So the current rating system could get used for any sort of bill like the one they're considering, rather than making another attempt to define what violence is...

Except for the fact that the agency deciding ratings has nothing to do with the government.

At least there is some enforcement at some venues.

I just got the 2nd book in electronic form from EOUL, and Silvereyes is still present in that work. I haven't read the first one though. (Although I did read the original original Mistborn and Final Empire, so fewer surprises for me! Really kind of interesting to see two fantasy worlds you knew get the Monster Mash into one.)

I am hesitant to use the Holocaust as an example, because in that case the Jews were more of an ethnic group, but in the Middle East right now, in Ireland there is the Protestants and the Catholics, etc.

This was interesting and, being removed from the conflict, I'm going to defer commenting on it in favor of a question. In the UK and Ireland however...do people consider this to be a religious conflict still? That was never my understanding at all.

As far as the legal issue goes, the felony nature of the law as well as the fact that I can't tell whether Mario Brothers (any version) is on the list of 'violent' video games is more than a little disturbing. I can see where I would like the bill to go. Some games such as Grand Theft Auto went way over the line, but were heavily distributed and purchased anyway, and that bothers me almost as much. I'm sure there's been even worse games since. Does anyone know what the GTA series was rated by the video game industry?

And you have to show up on time when it's your shift, which is just messy for those scheduled assassinations.

Out of curiousity, I'm guessing that you guys aren't doing this via online posts due to the need to set a time. What's the communication format?

I never played the original Car Wars game as such, but for a while we had a game called Autoduel on our Commodore 64 that was based on Car Wars. Having your own personal pre-programmed clone as your extra life was the best. So were those salvage/courier runs.

Is a dragon that's not breathing fire even hot enough to register for a heat-seeking missile? They're tuned to seek out the engines of other fighters and I doubt the body of the average D&D dragon is that hot. Even if you turned up the sensitivity you'd be just as likely to hit the nearest large rock with the sun shining on it or somesuch.

I'm also going to vote for DR/magic applying in this case. However, given the damage of a missile or fighter-mounted cannon, I'm not sure it'd make much difference.

Being able to kill from 30 miles away is a good trick too, but in that scenario we're probably giving the fighter the advantage of spotters.

If we do end up playing some games again I might be able to snag Arkham Horror from my brothers. It's a new-to-me probably new-in-general game based on Call of Chtulu and the like, and the one time I played it, it was entertaining.
