My guess would be that they have someone burning a metal next to them when they are tested. If the person's metal vibrations vanish, then you'd know.

Writing is all about execution, and I find applying some basic laws of physics to magic systems make them more understandable and realistic. I was just on Amazon, and I saw that The Way Of Kings is due out August 31st, instead of the 17th. Can anyone confirm this?

So Hoid isn't technically a shard, but he is bound to one.
Hoid (person) is bound to a shard, just like Ati (person) was bound to Ruin (shard), and Leras (Person) was bound to Preservation (shard).
As for trying to repair "the original shard of Adonalsium"(it should just be Adonalsium
), I certainly wouldn't be surprised if he was. How or why, I'm not sure.
